The second name of my father-in-law, the Rebbe, is Yitzchak, the name Avraham gave his son because “whoever hears will laugh (yitzachak) over me” (as it says in the fifth aliyah of Parashas Vayera). There were those who “laughed,” saying that at the ages of one hundred and ninety, Avraham and Sarah couldn’t possibly have a child, but in the end Yitzchak was born. Similarly, when the Rebe arrived in the United States and established Shaloh, for Jewish public school children to have the opportunity to learn about Yiddishkeit, some people “laughed,” arguing that nothing would come of it because this country already has an established system that’s ninety or a hundred years old etc., and that even if you get a Jewish child involved temporarily, it won’t last, and the eventually the ways of the land will erase it. But ultimately, this program resulted in tens of thousands of observant Jews! Similarly, Og, king of Bashan claimed that he could wipe away Yitzchak with one finger, but in the end Og fell into the hands of Yitzchak’s descendants. Because though Yitzchak was just one Jewish child, regarding him the posuk says, “I will multiply your offspring.” Similarly, with toil, every Jew can “find” within himself unimaginable abilities etc.

One of Avraham’s first activities was [as it says in the sixth aliyah of Parashas Vayera]: “and he called there in the name of Hashem, G-d of the world” – “Do not read it as ‘and he called there,’ but ‘and he made others call’” – he caused his entire generation to proclaim that “this palace has a Master” etc. And it was on the foundation that this country [the United States] was established by its founders – to have a place where they could educate their children in the spirit of faith in the Creator of the world. And belief that G-d is present in this world, such that one’s day-to-day conduct is permeated with this faith, and before doing or not doing something – he first thinks about what Hashem says about it. Those who claim that it is “unconstitutional” for the government to assist schools who teach this must know that the opposite is true!

The Tzemach Tzedek had a set time each month when he would personally test all the children in the cheder where his son, the Rebbe Maharash, learned, and after testing them he would give them prizes. When we talk about going out to gather Jewish children and teach them Alef-Beis, some people claim: I’m a big maskil and oved etc., why should I occupy myself with this, when others can do it? But we must know that this is a “mitzvah applicable to the body”: in order for one’s body to become more refined etc., he must go against his nature, by gathering Jewish children to teach them Alef-Beis – just like the Tzemach Tzedek, who personally took the time every month to engage in the education of young children! And even if until now one was busy with mesiras-nefesh and contemplating the Divine oneness, he must know that there’s an even greater service – to go to the “outside” and gather children and teach them that Hashem runs the world! As my father-in-law the Rebbe explains, the mesiras-nefesh of Rabbi Akiva, who strove for mesiras-nefesh – “when will I have the opportunity to fulfill it” – isn’t as great as the mesiras-nefesh of Avraham Avinu, who personally went out among the gentiles to influence them to call out by the name of Hashem, G-d of the world!

Regarding Avraham Avinu, [the second aliyah of] Parashas Vayera states, “For I have known him because he commands his sons and his household after him, that they should keep the way of Hashem to perform righteousness and justice…” (and if he educated his children to do so, he certainly did so himself): Avraham’s tzedakah and kindness – “performing righteousness and justice” – weren’t a function of his nature; rather, he did it because that is the “way of Hashem.” And this is why, as the Midrash states, Avraham would use unconventional means, if necessary, to get his guests to thank Hashem for the food he served them, even requiring them to pay for it until they agreed: the point of his acts of kindness was to spread G-dliness in the world, to the extent not only of a “Master in this palace,” but of Keil Olam (not Keil Ha’Olam) – meaning that the whole identity of the world is only that of Hashem Who creates it etc.; first he tried to do this with Chesed, but if that didn’t work, he resorted to Gevurah etc.

The distinction between the service of birurim [elevation of the spiritual spark within physical matter] in general, and the service of being tested in particular: one is supposed to strive for birurim etc., but regarding tests we daven every day “do not bring me...to a test.” To withstand the test requires extraordinary strength, but when one does so, the challenge is completely nullified and no impression of it remains at all. Therefore, when a person encounters something that prevents him from fulfilling a clear law in the Shulchan Aruch, he must know that it is not a true reality, but only a test; through it requires great strength to withstand it – he surely has the capability to do so, and then he will see that it never really existed at all!

On the posuk, “The Jews had light and joy, and gladness (sason) and honor,” the Mitteler Rebbe explains that sason means hidden joy. This is the connection between the Gemara’s statement that “sason refers to milah” – because the joy (“they accepted it upon themselves with joy”) of a bris milah (Parashas Lech Lecha) is hidden, since the baby experiences pain and the father sees “his son’s blood being spilled.” Similarly, in the era when “we are still servants to Achashverosh,” there is pain in the world, to the extent that we can only experience hidden joy – sason – and even that is difficult to attain. But just as the mitzvah of milah involves pain, and nevertheless, one has (hidden) joy, because he understands that this is the only way to make an “everlasting covenant in your flesh” (because Hashem wanted us to perfect the world, which is why He doesn’t cause people to be born circumcised) – so, too, regarding the pain in the world etc.

[The first aliyah of] Parashas Lech Lecha states that “Avram travelled, continually travelling southward,” thereby taking possession of Eretz Yisrael. Therefore, though in the beginning of the parashah Hashem tells Avram, “I will give this land to your offspring” – at the end of the parashah, Hashem tells him during the Bris Bein Habesarim [in the sixth aliyah], “I have given this Land to your offspring” – He had already given it to him. And so, too, in our times: we must “go” throughout the entire Eretz Yisrael – and settle all the territories! We are promised that this will happen with joy and gladness of heart, and peacefully, because it’s already been “given.” And this doesn’t need to be done loudly; the main thing is to actually do it!

During the Bris Bein Habesarim [in shishi of Parashas Lech Lecha] Hashem told Avraham Avinu: “and they will enslave them and oppress them for four hundred years, and afterwards they will go out with great possessions”: The whole point of exile (isn’t to cause pain to the Jewish people, chas v’shalom, rather it) is for them to “go out with great possessions” – “so that converts will join them” – to reveal G-dliness everywhere, to turn this lowest world into a dwelling for Hashem, and to draw near every Jew, even in a far flung corner of the world etc. Therefore, when a Jew says, we’re in a dark and bitter exile, why must I focus on influencing another Jew to increase in Torah and mitzvos etc. – one must know the in truth, without the “great possessions,” it’s as though the whole exile is for naught! And the same applies in general to the soul’s descent into this world.

The Gemara states, “offering food is great, because it brings near…”, as we see from the fact that Amon and Moav’s failure to provide food for the Jewish people resulted in them being distanced from the Jewish people. This divide already began in the time of Avraham Avinu, as it says in [shelishi of] Parashas Lech Lecha, “Lot traveled…and they parted from one another,” which eventually resulted in the divide between the Jewish people and Lot’s descendants Amon and Moav. The fact that it was specifically “after Lot parted from him” that the Divine Presence was revealed to Avraham (a soul in a body), indicates that this is the sort of divide that has a valid place, and that it even has an effect on heaven and earth being connected (a level even higher than heaven and earth themselves). And even regarding this kind separation our Sages said that “offering food is a great thing”! It is called “great” because this ability to bridge even a divide at such a lofty level comes from a place that transcends seder hishtalshelus. And if “food” offered by a non-Jew (who are inherently separate) can have such a great effect, we can understand that “food” shared among Jews, who are inherently connected certainly has a lofty effect, causing those lofty levels to be revealed. And all this happens through “food” in the simple sense.

Today’s portion of Sefer Hamitzvos discusses how a firstborn is holy, and that a firstborn animal may not be eaten outside of Yerushalayim. The lesson is: Anything that comes first must be sanctified to Hashem. For example, a Jew must begin the day with something holy; therefore, the first thing he thinks and says upon waking up is Modeh Ani etc. Moreover, the place in which one sanctifies the “firstborn” must be turned into a holy place – “Yerushalayim” – for example, the room in which he says Modeh Ani should become a holy place. Today’s Rambam states that “A person can inspect all firstborn animals [for blemishes] except his own firstborn animal.” The lesson is: When it comes to something that personally affects someone, he cannot not rely on himself to objective, but must rather ask someone qualified.
