    Synopsis

The Shach states that “a Beha”b fast is never set before the 7th of Cheshvan.” This alludes to the remarkable quality of the 7th of Cheshvan: The purpose of Beha”b is to fill in anything lacking from the month of Tishrei etc.; we can understand this based on the explanation in Chassidus that the reason we say tachanun after Shemoneh Esrei is because it is only upon reaching the pinnacle of davening that he can recognize his true spiritual state and that he is lacking. (Moreover, it’s possible that one’s true current state isn’t lacking, but from the perspective of the higher level he reaches, he is lacking – which explains the dictum that one should live “all his days in teshuvah”). Similarly, we can understand the greatness of the 7th of Cheshvan: this is when we reach such a high level that teshuvah and atonement become necessary.

    Synopsis

The Rambam writes (in Hilchos Avodah Zarah) that “Avraham was forty years old when he recognized his Creator.” However, the Gemara in Nedarim states that Avraham was three years old, while the Midrash states that he was forty-eight years old. Though there is a version of the Midrash stating like the Rambam that he was forty, why did the Rambam specifically choose that version? Moreover: in Or HaTorah, the Tzemach Tzedek discusses and resolves the apparent contradiction between the Gemara and the Midrash, but he doesn’t mention the Rambam’s opinion (age forty)?! We can explain that Rambam learns that the Gemara is talking about the beginning of Avraham’s journey, so it says he was three years old. But the Rambam is talking about when Avraham reached complete recognition – and the reason he chooses the version stating that Avraham was forty as opposed to forty-eight is because that accords with the Mishna’s statement that “forty is the age for understanding.” However, even after age forty, Avraham continued advancing in his Divine service, reaching an even higher level when he was forty-eight etc. And the reason the Tzemach Tzedek specifically chooses the version that he was forty-eight years old is because in order to reach those levels that the Tzemach Tzedek is talking about there, the level of recognition at age forty isn’t enough, rather, Avraham was forty-eight years old.

    Synopsis

On the verse in Parashas Noach, “And they said to one another, ‘Come, let us make bricks and fire them thoroughly’; so the bricks were to them for stones…”, Rashi explains that the reason they didn’t use stones is because “there are no stones in Bavel, which is a valley.” In terms of Divine service: a “stone” is created by Heaven, whereas “bricks” are manmade. And this is the difference between Eretz Yisrael and Bavel: Eretz Yisrael is inherently holy, and therefore it contains stones – “stones of iron.” By contrast, Bavel, in the diaspora, is a “valley,” an “open place”; when we you look at it with physical eyes, you don’t see the “fence” of Torah and mitzvos. In order for the conduct in Bavel to accord with Hashem’s will, work and toil are necessary, and when “you will labor,” then “you will find success” – “the bricks will be to them for stones.” And this is done by taking clay, dust from the ground, forming it, and burning it in a furnace, until it becomes a new entity. And the same applies to Jewish education: “A wild donkey a man will be born”; therefore, a child must be educated properly: first he must be “kneaded,” and formed, and then heated with a fiery furnace – “its coals are coals of fire – a flame of Hashem,” until he grows up to be a strong Jew, a “brick” that can be used to build an “everlasting edifice”.

    Synopsis

A Jew on the level of “your heads of your tribes” may think, since he can spend his time studying Torah all day etc., why should he engage in something so simple as influencing non-Jews to keep the Sheva Mitzvos B’nai Noach? The answer is based on the dictum of our Sages, “Be as meticulous in a minor mitzva as a major one”: The mitzvos express Hashem’s desire, which cannot be divided into “minor” and “major”; one who transgresses any mitzvah, even a minor Rabbinic requirement, transgresses Hashem’s will chas v’shalom! Moreover, the very thought of trying to use human intellect to discern which aspects of Torah and mitzvos one ought to engage in is odd to begin with. As for his question, that he’s supposed to bey studying Torah diligently, so where will he find the time for promoting the Sheva Mitzvos etc.? The answer is that he interrupts his Torah study in any event, and not only for things that are absolutely necessary. And more importantly – every Jew, even one who is among the “ten idlers,” is obligated to influence the gentiles in this regard, as the Rambam rules.

    Synopsis

One of the pesukim we say in the Zichronos on Rosh Hashana appears in the third aliyah of Parashas Noach: “And Hashem remembered Noach and all the animals etc.” Hashem “remembering Noach” led to His making the covenant with Noach etc. We can understand this based on the idea that there are three covenants: (1) The covenant with Noach regarding the existence of the world – no to bring another Flood (although the world too, exists “for the sake of the Jewish people who are called ‘first,” and the main descendants of Noach are the Jewish people, to the extent that the 7 Noachide laws were given at Matan Torah to the Jewish people to give over to the nations). (2) The covenant with Avraham, the Bris Bein Habesarim, which had to do with Torah and mitzvos. (3) The covenant with Moshe Rabbeinu (“behold I make a covenant”) regarding teshuvah. The reason it was possible to make a covenant with Noach, even though it was before the Torah was given, and before the abolition of the decree that “the higher realms shall not descend to the lower realms” etc. is only because “Hashem remembered Noach and the animals etc. – drawing down from a place so high that “man and animal” are equal, and all this is because of Hashem’s “inner, essential love” for the Jewish people (and before them, for Noach).

    Synopsis

    1) The teaching of the Baal Shem Tov on the verse in the second aliyah of Parashas Noach, “Come into the teivah, you and all your household etc.” – that when a Jew “enters” the teivos, the words of Torah and tefilah, that protects him, his family, and the entire world etc. 2) When we look with only our physical eyes, it seems that the month of Cheshvan isn’t a special month, and to the contrary – it’s the only month without any Yom Tov. But when we look inside the Torah, we see that it has a very special quality – it is fit for the building and dedicating the third Beis Hamikdash! As the Midrash states, the first Beis Hamikdash was completed in the month of Cheshvan, and nevertheless the dedication was postponed until Tishrei – and Hashem promised to compensate the month of Cheshvan by making the dedication of the third Beis Hamikdash in that month. This also teaches us how careful we must be to respect another person’s dignity and not to offend anyone etc., just as Hashem was careful with the dignity of the month of Cheshvan.

    Synopsis

When we go from the month of Tishrei which, is “full of festivals” to the month of Cheshvan, which is full of mundane matters etc. – “and Yaakov went on his way” – it’s necessary to make positive resolutions for the entire year. To make it easier to make these resolutions and actually keep them – they should be made in public, as explained in Kuntres Heichaltzu; above all, resolutions should be made regarding ahavas yisroel; as explained there, it is specifically in this way that we “take revenge for Hashem against Midian” etc. (and therefore, it should be strongly resolved at every farbrengen to “take revenge for Hashem against Midian” – by eliminating every form of strife Rachmana litzlan between one persona and another, and to have Ahavas Yisroel etc.). Therefore, it is appropriate to arrange gatherings and farbrengens wherever possible in connection with the month of Cheshvan, to make such resolutions – and in public, in the presence of the congregation – regarding Torah and mitzvos in general, and ahavas yisroel etc. for the entire year.

    Synopsis

One of the methods of Torah study is the method of “Do not read…but” (which doesn’t negate the plain meaning of the verse, but rather adds to it). We find this method at the very beginning of the Torah, on the verse Bereishis bara Elokim: Our Sages stated, “Do not read it as Bereishis, but bara shis (‘He created a foundation’)”. In terms of Divine service: at the beginning of one’s Divine service, a person sees a world – heaven and earth etc. And we tell him, “Do not read it as Bereishis,” that the world exists independently chas v’shalom, but rather “bara shis” – that the world has a “Creator” and He created the world on a shis, a foundation – and the foundation is the “shitin,” under the mizbeach in the Beis Hamikdash! Likewise, Jewish education in general must be in this manner of “Do not read it…rather”: When a person sees the world around him and engages in it, he must remember that “I and Your people are distinguished from every nation on the face of the earth” – not everything one sees on the street that appears pleasant is good for a Jew. Rather, “do not read it” that way – don’t look at its appearance on the surface; look at what it says about it in Shulchan Aruch! When Jewish education is this way, the entire house is engulfed in this spirit – such that even when a Jew engages in sowing and reaping etc. – he “does not read it” as something one does because those are the rules of nature; rather, he sows and reaps because he “believes in the One Who lives forever”!

    1) A lesson from the beginning of Parashas Bereishis, which describes the creation of the heavens and earth in detail, and says that “Hashem saw all that He had made, and it was very good”: Hashem “created to do” which means “to fix” – for a person through his Divine service to perfect creation so that it becomes visible that everything in the world is “very good.” 2) A lesson from the conclusion of Parashas Bereishis, “and Noach found favor in the eyes of Hashem”: Since a Jew’s purpose is to cause “pleasure (נייחא) to Heaven” etc. Hashem – “Noach” – therefore, every Jew certainly finds favor in the eyes of Hashem (even before actually performing his Divine service); then we continue with the beginning of Parashas Noach, “These are the generations of Noach, Noach was a righteous man etc.” – that every Jew is visibly a “righteous man.” 3) A lesson from the beginning of the sixth aliyah of Parashas Bereishis, “This is the book of the generations of man”: every Jew has a “book,” the Sefer Torah, which tell him how to act like “toldos Adam” (the “descendants of Adam” from the expression edameh l'elyon – “I will emulate the Most High”) – and then from the end of the aliyah, which discusses the birth of Mesushelach, who lived longer than Adam Harishon – Hashem gives every Jew the ability to reach the level of great tzaddikim, and gives them long life and good years, like Mesushelach and even more, because the Jew has the advantage of Matan Torah.

    Synopsis

A simple question on the verse in the third aliya of Parashas Bereishis (following the verse, “And Hashem formed from the earth every beast of the filed…and He brought it to man… and whatever the man called each living thing, that was its name”): The Torah states, “And man named all the cattle and the fowl of the heavens and all the beasts of the field” – why doesn’t it mention fish?! We can’t say that Rashi already addresses this when he writes that vayitzer mean “domination and conquest …that He subjugated them under man’s dominion,” and that regarding fish there’s no “dominion” (because they’re in the sea, unlike land-animals and birds that man can utilize etc.) because the verse explicitly states, “and rule over the fish of the sea” – an expression of dominion! We can explain that the answer to this question is so obvious (even for a five-year-old child beginning to study Chumash) that Rashi need not address it: The point of calling a name is for a person to hear it, so you can get his attention etc.; therefore, fish have no use for a name – even if you call it’s name, it won’t hear it, because its covered in water! But explanation is still required based on the idea in Chassidus that a thing’s Hebrew name brings it into existence etc. – that being the case, fish, too, seemingly need a name?! And similarly: In the Supernal Chariot in Yechezkel, there is the “face of a man” the “face of a lion” the “face of an ox” and the “face of an eagle” (through which people and beasts and domesticated animals and birds receive their life-force etc.) – why is there no “face of a fish”? And “Give a wise man, and he will become yet wiser.”
