Yom Kippur is the day of teshuvah. It is written, “my sin is always before me”; the question is, once was has done teshuvah and has attained atonement, he is called a “friend” of Hashem; why then must he “always” remember that he once sinned?! The answer is that just as life must be constant, and it cannot be interrupted, so, too, Torah and mitzvos – the true life of a Jew – must be constant without interruption. And this is especially true of the teshuvah rooted in a level that transcends change (“I, Hashem, have not changed”): when it comes down in this world it is constant, so that even after atonement, one still is in a state of teshuvah. And this is the meaning of “spending all his days in teshuvah”: Seemingly, what need is there for teshuvah on a day that one is certain he didn’t sin?! The answer is that while that may be the case regarding lower-level teshuvah, which involves time and space, and where it is the case that once one has verbally confessed and brought a sacrifice etc. and attained atonement etc., so there is no reason to do that again the next day – however, when it comes to higher-level teshuvah, to become desirable before Hashem like before the sin, and even more so etc. – that requires spending “all his days in teshuvah” – “always.” And this is also the idea that in the future Hashem will bring tzaddikim to do teshuvah. Similarly regarding the teshuvah of Yom Kippur: even though the verbal confessions etc. take place specifically on Yom Kippur, the truth is, to the contrary, it is specifically the teshuvah of Yom Kippur, “you shall be purified before Hashem,” that must continue the whole year!

On the Mishna, “When the Yom Tov of Rosh Hashanah occurs on Shabbos, they would blow [the shofar] in the Beis Hamikdash, but not in the rest of the country,” the Gemara explains that this is due to Rabba’s decree (“and this is the reason for lulav, and this is the reason for megillah”). Our Rebbe’im ask in Chassidus, why did our Sages uproot a Biblical command of blowing shofar, and lulav etc., because of Rabba’s decree, considering that its such a lofty mitzvah etc.? And thus, they prove that when Rosh Hashanah falls out on Shabbos there’s no need to blow shofar, because the essential holiness of Shabbos itself accomplishes whatever blowing shofar accomplishes etc. But then the question is, if so, why do we need Rabba’s decree – even without it, there is no reason to blow shofar on Shabbos?! (And the same can be asked regarding lulav and megillah). We can explain that the purpose of the rationale of “Rabba’s decree” is because sometimes we find that we do certain things not because they are inherently obligatory, but in order to “commemorate the Beis Hamikdash,” and seemingly, it would make sense here, too, to blow the shofar on Shabbos in order to commemorate the Beis Hamikdash (where they blew shofar even on Shabbos), and here, the reason we don’t do so is because of Rabba’s decree.

[Continued.] The lesson is: some people mistakenly think that women having equal employment to men is good for them. The Torah tells us that the opposite is true: Hashem gave women something even greater that making the festival pilgrimage “to appear before Hashem your G-d” – and that is to be the “mainstay of the home.” It is the woman who remains at home and ensures that the home rests on the foundation of Torah and mitzvos, and especially, the one who sees to it that the children are educated properly. And as discussed many times, the foundation of the Jewish people is “to their families” – that the family should be built according to Hashem’s will – that the husband should fulfill his role and the wife should fulfill her role. And the woman’s role is no less important – and perhaps more important – than that of the husband. And we see Rachmana litzlan the rift within the family that has resulted from the abovementioned mistake. It is painful to see women whose sole aim is to tear away women from their primary role so they can be appoint as a “gabbai” or be counted in a minyan etc. – this not only goes against halacha, but also affects the existence of the Jewish people! And the main thing is, on the positive side – Jewish women and girls must know that their primary mission and true fulfillment is to be the mainstay of the home, and as a result, they are then able to bring their children to Shiloh and say “for this youth I prayed”.

The reason we read the Haftorah on the first day of Rosh Hashana is because Chana was remembered on Rosh Hashana. Obviously, there’s a fundamental lesson for our times, and for the entire year. The Haftorah relates how Elkana would come to Shiloh with his whole family and with great fanfare, but when Shmuel was born, Chana refused to join Elkana on the trip, so that she could remain home with Shmuel “until the child is weaned.” Obviously, Chana, who was a neviah, appreciated the greatness of going to Shiloh when “to see and be seen” etc., and moreover, Elkana could have hired servants to take care of the child on the journey etc., or Chana could have left Shmuel with a “babysitter”… But the Haftorah says no! Chana gave up going to Shiloh for two years to take care of her son personally, and to be able to do so in the best manner! And Elkana agreed with her approach, and it is part of Torah. And in this way she merited to bring Shmuel to Shiloh after two years and say, “For this child did I pray.” [To be continued.]

Though teshuvah involves tremendous bitterness over having stumbled from one’s level etc., at the same time it also involves the greatest joy. Because if every mitzvah must be done with great joy – by contemplating how it is an opportunity to fulfill Hashem’s will etc. – how much more so the mitzvah of teshuvah, which fills in what is lacking from all the mitzvos etc., and therefore, the joy of teshuvah corresponds to the joy of all the mitzvos! Moreover: “In the place where baalei teshuvah stand – even perfect tzaddikim cannot stand there,” meaning, teshuvah is incomparable to the rest of the mitzvos, and therefore, the joy it evokes must be incomparably greater than the joy of all the other mitzvos. And this aspect of “baalei teshuvah” is the advantage the soul receives by its descent into the body, over its state before its descent (the level of tzaddikim).

We spoke earlier about the greatness of being with the congregation during the Ten Days of Teshuvah. But seemingly, teshuvah is a mitzvah between man and Hashem, that requires an “honest accounting,” which seemingly is best done by being alone and contemplating Hashem’s greatness etc.; what then is the advantage of doing it together with the congregation? To explain: we see that the reality is that when Yom Kippur, the time for teshuvah arrives, Jews rush to shul (even those who don’t come the rest of the year) specifically to be with the congregation. The reason is that since “a person is his own relative,” and there’s no guarantee he’ll be to objectively make an “honest accounting,” he has to go about his teshuvah in the presence of someone else, who can point out those areas where his “self-love” prevents him from seeing that fixing is needed. And this specifically requires the congregation, which includes all ten categories of Jews, so that everyone can show the person those areas in which they are passionate about etc., in which he needs fixing. Feeling down when doing teshuvah is a trick of the evil inclination, designed to distract prevent a person from doing teshuvah; we must be careful not to fall for it. And we know the adage of our Rebbe’im, “Just like one must be aware of his faults – so must he be aware of his own quality” – a Jew’s qualities are “his own,” but his faults are not “his own;” rather, they come from outside him, and get stuck to him due to his engagement in the physicality of the world etc.

(1) Parashas Haazinu emphasizes Jewish unity. To preface: Jewish unity means the entire Jewish people, “from the heads of your tribes” to “your woodcutters and your water drawers,” stand “all of you” together as one, “without man finding beginning and end.” And Parashas Haazinu is the only parashah in the Torah that was said entirely before an assembly of the whole Jewish people, as the plain meaning of the verse indicates. And this is the lesson from Parashas Haazinu, that every day and every moment of the week of Parashas Haazinu one must “live” with this theme of unity. Moreover: the Torah promises that this song of Parashas Haazinu “will not be forgotten from the mouth of their offspring.” (2) Parashas Haazinu emphasizes that when a Jew speaks and repeats the words of Moshe Rabbeinu, the heavens and the earth and all their hosts listen to him! And they have no choice in the matter because they have no free will. And this is connected to the Tzemach Tzedek (whose birthday is Erev Rosh Hashanah), who would “make arrangements” regarding the Russian government in the capital on Rosh Hashanah.

Since Rosh Hashanah is the “head” of the entire year, and a person’s conduct all year depends on his conduct during Rosh Hashanah, it is important to properly utilize the two days of Rosh Hashanah, and likewise, to properly utilize every hour of the days leading up to Rosh Hashanah. This year, Rosh Hashanah falls out on Shabbos. The lesson: Shabbos begins with Jewish women lighting Shabbos candles, when it is openly visible that a person isn’t involved in mundane matters, and has more time for learning etc.; similarly, when the “head” of the year falls out on Shabbos, that must affect the “body” – the entire year must be Shabbosdik etc.
