1) הוראה חשובה משם פ' האזינו, שפירושו לשמוע ולהקשיב: לא להסתמך על השכל, אלא לפני כל פעולה יש לבדוק מה נאמר ע"ז בתורה, בשו"ע, ו"להקשיב" לתורה, או, אם אינו מבינָהּ בעצמו, להקשיב לרב שיסביר לו מה כתוב בתורה ע"ז! ונוסף לזה, צ"ל כבהמשך הכתובים "שאל אביך ויגדך זקנך ויאמרו לך" ולהקשיב ולקיים את הוראתם, מכיון שהם כבר חיו במשך כו"כ שנים ונשארו שלימים ביהדותם למרות הנסיונות הקשים וכו'. 2) הוראה ממ"ש בשלישי דפ' האזינו "ירכיבהו על במתי ארץ": הקב"ה קבע שמילוי שליחותם של בנ"י הוא ב"ארץ" דוקא‏ – ‏לעשות לו ית' דירה בתחתונים, אבל ביחד עם זה העמידם "על במתי ארץ"‏ – ‏מקום גבוה שמשם רואים את כל הסביבה ובנקל יותר לתת הוראות משם לכל סביבה וכו', ובאופן של "ירכיבהו על וגו'"‏ – ‏ע"ד רוכב במרכבה שהוא המנהיג ושולט על המרכבה, וישיבתו באופן כזה נותנת לו כבוד וחשיבות ובמילא מתקיימות הוראותיו מיד.

(1) An important lesson from the name of Parashas Haazinu, which means “listen:” one should not rely on her own intellect, rather, before doing anything, she should check to see what the Shulchan Aruch says, about it, and then “listen” to the Torah, or, if she needs help understanding it, she should ask a Rav, and listen to him. In addition, the verse sates, “Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders and they will inform you” – one should listen to what they say because they have life experience, and have maintained their Yiddishkeit despite the challenges etc. (2) A lesson from the verse in the third aliya of Parashas Haazinu, “He made them ride upon the high places of the earth”: Hashem put the Jewish people specifically “in the earth” – to make a dwelling for Him in this world, but at the same time, He put them “upon the high places of the earth” – a high place from which one can see the entire surrounding, making it easier to give instructions for the entire surrounding etc., and in such a way that “they will ride etc.” – like one riding a wagon, who controls and drives it, and by sitting in this fashion he gains respect and importance, so that his instructions are immediately carried out.

The special quality of the twenty-fifth of Elul is that it is when the entire world was created, and it was “one day” – on that day “Hashem was alone in His world”; this is renewed every year on the twenty-fifth of Elul. And here we can add something most wondrous: the creation on the twenty-fifth of Elul includes not just those things that are within time and space, but rather all of Seder Hishtalshelus, from before the tzimtzum, and even the very first ray of Divine light emanating from the Divine essence and core. And this, too, is renewed every year at the first moment of the twenty-fifth of Elul, because even though these levels transcend time and space, however, after the Torah was given, everything was given to the domain of the Jewish people – “for the sake of the Jewish people” – who exist within time and space, within this physical world, and whose deeds are within time and space. Thus, we can understand the tremendous quality of this day, and the special abilities given to us on this day, and we should utilize those abilities etc.

אע"פ שהענין ד"אתם נצבים . . כולכם לפני ה' וגו'" הוא תמיד, שהרי כל יהודי נמצא תחת השגחתו התמידית של הקב"ה ו"הוא והשגחתו אחד", אעפ"כ ישנם זמנים שזהו בגלוי יותר (וזהו מ"ש "אתם נצבים היום וגו'"), וזה מתבטא בזה שהענין ד"עצם הטוב" שלו ית' בא בגלוי יותר בטוב הנראה והנגלה בעיני בשר. כמו בחודש אלול, ובפרט – מיום ח"י אלול, ועוד יותר – בימי הסליחות, שתחלת הסליחות הוא באמירת "לך ה' הצדקה", שב"צדקה" נכלל אפי' "סוס לרכוב עליו" למי שהי' רגיל בזה, והרי לכל יהודי, בתור בן אברהם יצחק ויעקב ובת שרה רבקה רחל ולאה, מגיע הרחבה ועשירות בגו"ר כפשוטו, וזהו ה"צדקה" שהקב"ה נותן לכל יהודי כבר בימים האחרונים של השנה, וזוהי הכנה לכתיבה וחתימה טובה לשנה טובה ומתוקה כבר בראש השנה הבעל"ט.

Even though the verse, “You are all standing this day before Hashem, your G-d” applies always, because every Jew is under Hashem’s eternal Divine providence, and “He and His providence are one,” nevertheless, there are times when it is more revealed (thus the verse says, “You are all standing this day etc.”), and when it is revealed, since Hashem is the “essence of goodness” it is expressed in open, revealed good. Namely, the month of Elul, and particularly, from the day of Chai Elul and on, and even more so during the days of Selichos, which we begin with “to You, Hashem, is the tzedakah” – tzedakah includes even a “horse to ride upon” for someone used to that, and every Jew, as a son of Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov, and daughter of Sarah, Rivkah, Rachel and Leah, deserves abundance and wealth, spiritually and physically, in the simple sense, and this is the “tzedakah” that Hashem gives every Jew, already in the final days of the year, and this prepares them to be inscribed and sealed for the good, for a good and sweet year, already on Rosh Hashana.

בפ' וילך מדובר אודות מצות "הקהל": שבזמן שביהמ"ק הי' קיים היו מתאספים בנ"י, אנשים נשים וטף, פעם בשבע שנים בביהמ"ק לשמוע את המלך קורא כמה פרשיות בתורה "למען ישמעו ולמען ילמדו.. כל הימים וגו'" - וזה השפיע על כל החיים בנוגע למעשה בפועל! ויתירה מזו: במצות הקהל נטלו חלק גם "טף" - גם עליהם השפיע מעמד "הקהל"! וההוראה לזמננו, כי הרי ביהמ"ק הרוחני, הנשמה, קיים גם היום בכאו"א: קריאת פרשיות אלו בפ' וילך צריכה להשפיע על כל החיים לקיים בפועל כל ההוראות של מצות הקהל, וגם על הילדים שבבית - שזה תלוי בעיקר על האם וכו'. וזוהי ההוראה מקריאת פ' זו לפני ר"ה: כי כדי לקבל ברכות ה' לכוח"ט, יש להכין את ה(בני-)בית ואת הילדים שיהיו כלים מתאימים לזה.

Parashas Vayelech talks about the mitzvah of Hakhel: When the Beis Hamikdash stood, the entire Jewish people, men, women and children, would gather once in seven years in the Beis Hamikdash to hear the king read certain passages from the Torah, “in order that they learn and fear…all the days etc.” – and this gathering had an effect on the rest of their lives, influencing their practical behavior. Moreover: the mitzvah was to even bring along very young children – Hakhel had an effect on them, too, even if they didn’t understand intellectually what was being read. The lesson for our times is that every Jew has a spiritual Beis Hamikdash in his soul; when we read about Hakhel in Parashas Vayelech, it must influence our entire lives to practically fulfill the lessons derived from Hakhel, and it must also influence the children in the house – and this depends primarily on the mother etc. And this is the lesson from the fact that we read this parashah before Rosh Hashana: to receive Hashem’s blessing to be inscribed and sealed for good, one should prepare his household, and the children in the household, to be a fitting receptacle for it.

בנוגע ל"גרים" והבלבול שנוצר לאחרונה וכו' – יש להכריז בגלוי שאין לפגוע בהם ח"ו, ואדרבה – הם חביבים במיוחד לפני הקב"ה (כמ"ש הרמב"ם)! אין מקום בתורה לחלק בין מי שנולד יהודי לבין גר! – כמ"ש [ברביעי דפ' וילך] "הקהל את העם האנשים והנשים והטף וגרך אשר בשעריך" – גם ה"גר אשר בשעריך" נוגע לכללות מעמד הקהל! ועוד: הרמב"ם פוסק שגם גר שאינו מבין לה"ק חייב להשתתף ב"הקהל". וי"ל שמקורו הוא מפסוק זה שנאמר "וגרך אשר (לא "במחניך" שנמצא כבר ב"מחנה" וכו', אלא) בשעריך" – שגם גר שרק עכשיו נתגייר ונמצא עדיין ליד ה"שער" ואינו יודע כלום חייב לבוא ולשמוע את קריאת התורה מפי המלך, ורק כאשר גם הוא משתתף יתקיים ה"ישמעו וילמדו ויראו" אצל כל האנשים והנשים והטף באופן שזה יביא אותם "לעשות את כל דברי התורה הזאת"! ולהעיר שמשה אמר מצות הקהל, שבו מודגשת מעלת הגרים, ביום האחרון שלו שבו הגיע לתכלית השלימות! ולכן מצוה לפרסם שאסור לפגוע ח"ו בכבודם של הגרים (איסור שקשור עם ל"ו אזהרות)!

Regarding converts and the big confusion that arose lately etc. – it should be declared openly that no one should mistreat converts chas v’shalom – to the contrary – they are especially dear to Hashem (as the Rambam writes). There is no basis in the Torah to distinguish between someone born Jewish and a convert – as it says (in the fourth aliyah of Vayelech), “Assemble the people: the men, the women, and the children, and your convert that is in your cities – “your convert that is in your cities” also affects the entire event of Hakhel. Moreover, the Rambam rules that even a convert who doesn’t understand Hebrew is obligated to participate in Hakhel. And we can say that his source for that is from this verse that sates, “and your convert that is in your gates” (as opposed to “and your convert that is in your camp,” i.e., who is already in the “camp” etc., rather, “that is in your gates” – even a convert who just converted and is still at the “gates,” who doesn’t yet know anything, must come and hear he king read the Torah, and only with his participation can the gathering of everyone, the men the women and the children, really be “in order that they hear and in order that they learn and fear” in such a way that brings them “to do all the words of this Torah.” Moshe gave over the mitzvah of Hakhel, which emphasizes the unique quality of converts, on the last day of his life, the apex of his perfection. Therefore, it is a mitzvah to publicize that it is forbidden to disrespect converts (a prohibition involving 36 warnings).

The verse states [in the fourth aliya of Parashas Nitzvim), “Then Hashem your G-d will return with your captivity etc.”: When a Jew wonders how he can be expected to prepare for the Redemption and perform his Divine service without being deterred by the darkness of exile, he must know that as long as he is in exile, Hashem is together with him! Thus, the darkness of the world is of no consequence; he will certainly succeed in fulfilling Hashem’s shlichus, and doing it with joy! If, during one’s stocktaking in the month of Elul he sees that some things could have been done better, and he wonders how to fix it – to this, a subsequent verse states, “Hashem will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring,” an acronym for Elul: in the month of Elul Hashem provides special assistance for the service of teshuvah! Especially when the king is in the field etc.

The Chassidic adage that Chai Elul brings life into the month of Elul is connected to the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, who already at birth were “ready” to be leaders of the Jewish people. Of course, Elul, the month of stocktaking for the past year and preparation for the coming year, already has life, but compared to the increased vitality that Chai Elul brings, its prior state is considered to be “lacking life.” This was also the role R’ Yisrael Baal Shem Tov: to awaken the “Yisrael” in every Jew, even those in such a deep faint that the only solution is to “whisper their name into their ear”: the effect of “whispering the Baal Shem Tov’s name” is that one’s prior state is considered “fainting” compared to his state after the name was whispered into his ear. Practically: in the month of Elul, and especially from the day of Chai Elul, we must strengthen our Divine service with vitality, to the extent that our prior Divine is considered “lacking life.” And through the service of “I am my beloved’s,” we awaken the level of “My beloved is mine” – Hashem will help every Jew and bless him with a good and sweet year, spiritually and physically.

The goal of the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe in establishing Chassidus was for it to reach all Jews, even the simplest among them. Therefore, while Jewish leaders before Chassidus would remain in their place and wait for people to come and ask for guidance, meaning they were only able to influence those who recognized they were lacking and sought to fill that lack, the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe took a profoundly different approach: instead of waiting for people to come to them, they travelled around to bring the light of the Torah to anywhere Jews lived. Another thing: the Baal Shem Tov started out as an assistant to a cheder teacher. Thus, we can understand why my father-in-law the Rebbe invested so much effort in teaching young school children. And on the day of Chai Elul, the birthday of the Baal Shem Tov, we must know that the Baal Shem Tov gave everyone the ability to first be a helper himself, and then go about his surrounding and ignite the Divine soul within those around him etc.

15 Elul marks the founding of Yeshivas Tomchei Temimim; this year (5749) marks fifty years since the yeshiva relocated to the Southern Hemisphere, in the year 5700. The occasion should be marked with a special celebration, from 15 Elul itself, and continuing until Chai Elul, (the date the studies in the yeshiva commenced), especially in light of them any sichos of my father-in-law the Rebbe about Chai Elul. This should be done first and foremost here in Brooklyn, and then everywhere that there is a Tomchei Temimim etc. Chassidic publications such as “Kol Hayotzei L’milchemes Beis Dovid” (which describes the role of the yeshiva students etc.) should be reprinted for the occasion. And all this should be done with great fanfare, to the point that (after the thirty days since 15 Av) “There were no festivals for the Jewish people like the 15th of Av, 5749, in Brooklyn, New York!” Everyone who ever learned in Tomchei Temimim, or sends his children to learn there, should approach the yeshiva directors and offer to help; efforts should be made to establish new branches of Tomchei Temimim (with the permission of the central administration in Brooklyn) etc.

י"ג אלול הוא יום החתונה דכ"ק מו"ח אדמו"ר (ובש.ז. ה"ז חל ביום הרביעי ש"בתולה נשאת ביום הרביעי", ר"ת "לבנה", שקאי על ישראל ש"דומין ללבנה" ו"מונין ללבנה"), וכיון שזוהי חתונה של נשיא דורנו ו"הנשיא הוא הכל" ה"ז שייך לכאו"א בדורנו; ובזה מיתוסף עי"ז שבלילה זה מתקיימת חתונה בפועל, והרי נוסח השבע-ברכות הוא שווה בכל חתונה, וברכה האחרונה היא "מהרה ישמע בערי יהודה וכו'"‏ – ‏גאולה האמיתית והשלימה ע"י משיח צדקנו, ואז יהי' שלימות הנישואין של ה' וישראל; הקשר עם התחלת פ' כי תבוא "כי תבוא אל הארץ גו' ולקחת מראשית כל פרי האדמה וגו'", ואחז"ל "מראשית ולא כל ראשית", שמחלק המובחר עושה ביכורים, ובמה שנשאר משתמש לעניניו הגשמיים באופן של "בכל דרכיך דעהו". 13 Elul is the wedding anniversary of my father-in-law the Rebbe (which falls out this year on Wednesday, and the Mishna states, “Besulah nisas l’yom harevi’i” (“A besulah is married on Wednesday”), which is an acronym for levanah (moon), which corresponds to the Jewish people who “resemble the moon” and “count by the moon”); since it's a wedding of the leader of our generation, and “the nasi is everything,” this is relevant to everyone in our generation. And this is furthered by the fact that there is actually a wedding tonight, and the text of the Sheva Brachos is the same at every wedding; the final bracha is “let there speedily be heard in the cities of Yehuda etc.” – the true and complete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu, at which time will be the “wedding” of Hashem and the Jewish people. The connection to the beginning of Parashas Ki Savo, “…when you come into the land…you shall take of the finest of all the fruit of the ground etc.” – the Sages taught, “from the first, and not all of the first,” that one takes the best part for bikurim, use the reset for his physical needs in a manner of “knowing Him in all your ways.”
