13 Elul is the wedding anniversary of my father-in-law the Rebbe (which falls out this year on Wednesday, and the Mishna states, “Besulah nisas l’yom harevi’i” (“A besulah is married on Wednesday”), which is an acronym for levanah (moon), which corresponds to the Jewish people who “resemble the moon” and “count by the moon”); since it's a wedding of the leader of our generation, and “the nasi is everything,” this is relevant to everyone in our generation. And this is furthered by the fact that there is actually a wedding tonight, and the text of the Sheva Brachos is the same at every wedding; the final bracha is “let there speedily be heard in the cities of Yehuda etc.” – the true and complete Redemption through Moshiach Tzidkeinu, at which time will be the “wedding” of Hashem and the Jewish people. The connection to the beginning of Parashas Ki Savo, “…when you come into the land…you shall take of the finest of all the fruit of the ground etc.” – the Sages taught, “from the first, and not all of the first,” that one takes the best part for bikurim, use the reset for his physical needs in a manner of “knowing Him in all your ways.”

(1) A lesson from the beginning of Parashas Ki Savo, “And it will be, when you come into the land etc.”: A Jew must turn wherever he is into Eretz Yisroel, a place where G-dliness is visible etc. (2) A lesson from the pasuk in shelishi of Parashas Ki Savo, “You have selected Hashem this day…And Hashem has selected you…:” Hashem takes pride in the Jewish people and the Jewish people take pride in Hashem (and all this must be done in a way that is “good for Heaven and good for people” (the idea of Tuesday), meaning, one must influence himself and also influence others). And this is also connected to Rosh Hashanah, as the verse says, “this day” (as explained in Likkutei Torah), when we accept Hashem’s sovereignty, and we prepare for this in the month of Elul, when Hashem gives special abilities for this service, and we should utilize them!

The uniqueness of Elul is illustrated by the Alter Rebbe’s analogy of a king who greets the city people in the field, and “receives them all with a pleasant countenance and shows them all a smiling countenance,” meaning, even though “Hashem stands over” a person all year “to determine if he is serving Him properly,” which shows how much Hashem values every thought, speech, and action of every Jew, however in Elul, it is emphasized that this applies even when a person is “in the field,” engaged in matters that are not directly part of Divine service (even though they are permissible, and ultimately facilitate his Divine service). Even one’s work “in the field” is important to Hashem, and He is with him in the field, giving him His full attention. And when a person accustoms himself to feel this throughout the entire month of Elul, that has an effect on his behavior in the coming year as well.

The beginning of Parashas Ki Savo states, “And it will be, when you come into the land which Hashem, your God, gives you…to inherit it etc.;” the Midrash states that eretz (“land”) is related to the words ratzon (desire) and merutzah (running). The Baal Shem Tov explains that when a person is given the ratzon and merutzah to do Hashem’s will (the “land”), he must “settle in it,” making sure to “place it into the basket” – lights contained in vessels. “And you shall go to the place which Hashem your G-d will choose to have His Name dwell there:” When a Jew comes to a particular place, it is in order to spread G-dliness there. And this is connected to the Alter Rebbe’s explanation that “eretz” refers to: (a) The Oral Torah, specifically halacha, where Hashem’s desire is manifest by showing us how to actually perform the mitzvos, thus “puing it into the basket,” lights contained in vessel. (b) Rosh Hashanah (in the realm of Shanah): Rosh Hashanah is when the Jewish people “crown Me as King over you,” accepting the ratzon and merutzeh of Hashem upon themselves, and this brings His kingship down below into the world – i.e., lights contained in vessels, a dwelling in this lowest world – “to have His Name dwell there.”

Before Matan-Torah, the Jewish people had to win over Amalek. The function of Amalek is “asher karcha baderech” [as it says at the end of Parashas Ki Seitzei], which has two interpretations: “Kerirus,” to cool down a Jew’s excitement for Torah – like a grandson of Esav, son of Yitzchok etc., who makes a seemingly “valid” argument: You’re an intellectual person, it doesn’t befit you to put “we will do” before “we will hear,” because the Torah is “your wisdom” etc., and moreover, once you understand, you’ll eventually come “to do” in any event! So learn Torah, but don’t be like “Yaakov, an innocent man” who asks no questions; rather, be like “Esav, who understood hunting,” who did everything with calculation etc. We must know that this coldness ultimately results in the other kind of asher karcha baderech – related to the word “keri” – that the vitality that is supposed to be used for holiness, to “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it,” and make the world into a dwelling for Hashem – goes to waste – and the forces of kelipah enclothe it, causing kelipah to be magnified in a terrible fashion.

[The camp directors] just spoke about Ahavas Yisroel, and they talked about the Ahavas Yisroel of our Rebbe’im, and similarly, one of the Twelve Pesukim that were just recited is, “‘To “love your fellow as yourself’ – Rabbi Akiva says that this is a great principle of the Torah.” The question is, how can a simple Jew, a young girl, compare to the greatest among the Jewish people learn from their conduct? The answer is that through emunah in Hashem and in His Torah and His shluchim – Moshe Rabbeinu and the “Moshe” in every generation – she becomes connected to every Jew in every generation, who are “believers, sons of believers,” and therefore she is able to accomplish the greatest things! Therefore, it is no wonder that if only she decides to “toil,” to do everything in her ability, it is certain that she will “find” – she will find the power to know what to do and how to act, and to be a living, happy, and shining example for her entire surroundings.

Lately we’ve discussed that as part of the Mezuzah campaign, an effort should be made to check mezuzos and tefillin. Some people challenged this based on the Gemara and Halacha that a mezuzah belonging to an individual needs to be checked only twice in seven years, and tefillin don’t need to be checked at all! But that question misunderstands that the Gemara talks about checking mezuzos and tefillin that were kosher, but here we’re talking about checking to see whether there was ever a kosher mezuzah to begin with, whether the case has a scroll inside it, and if there’s a scroll whether it’s handwritten or printed on paper, and if it’s handwritten whether it contains the correct passages from the Shema, or, as happened in instance, the passage of Birchas Kohanim… If there’s even a doubt about this, it’s a doubt concerning a Biblical obligation, and all the more so when we know that there are people selling fake mezuzos, in Eretz Yisrael as well as in the diaspora, and the same applies to tefillin. And moreover, even regarding kosher mezuzos and tefillin, the Mateh Efraim cites the custom of checking them every year in the month of Elul etc.

True “equal rights” is when every person reaches their ultimate fulfillment in accordance with the abilities and talents they were given by Hashem. Therefore, a man must fulfill the role given to men, and a woman must fulfill the role given to women. This is the way to receive Hashem’s brachos. When a woman tries to copy a man, she shows that she considers herself less than men, as though she has less worth of her own. This approach goes against the Torah, which states [in the second aliyah of Parashas Ki Seitzei], “A man's attire shall not be on a woman, nor may a man wear a woman’s,” and it goes against a woman’s ability to find fulfillment. When everyone acts according to the abilities Hashem has given him, that eliminates the basis for jealousy etc., because everyone is happy with his lot, by feeling the ultimate happiness and goodness that comes with being able to utilize the abilities given to him by Hashem – the essence of goodness, and to fulfill his mission and role in the world. And Ahavas Yisroel dictates that one must influence his surroundings, too, to arrive at its fulfillment.

The keys to the Beis Hamikdash were given to the pirchei kehuna, and this also applies to the spiritual Beis Hamikdash: the pirchei kehuna are the yeshiva students. When they accept upon themselves the authority of the yeshiva administration and keep all the sedarim, they are given the “keys” to the Beis Hamikdash.” The job of a gatekeeper holding the keys is to open the door for those worthy of entering, and to close it to those unworthy of entering. In this case: the only qualification for entering the Beis Hamikdash is to be pure, which in spiritual terms means having pure faith, and being devoid of any negative ideas. Since the yeshiva students have the keys, they are responsible for making sure the Beis Hamikdash is open for every Jew. But they also have the responsibility (not to remain secluded in the four cubits of Torah and tefilah, but) to make every Jew fit to enter, by purifying them ridding them of negative ideas, and immersing them in the “waters of pure knowledge.” Practically speaking, the yeshiva students must utilize the remaining days of Elul until until Rosh Hashana to spread throughout the city, wherever there are Jew, and explain to them what Elul is, what selichos are, and that in the twelve days between Chai Elul and Rosh Hashana, everything that transpired in the past year can be fixed.
