    Synopsis

The Gemara’s statement that “Yaakov did not die…just as his offspring are alive, he too, is alive,” applies to the soul in the body (that’s why the Gemara asks, “was it for naught that the embalmers embalmed etc.”). And we know the teaching of the Baal Shem Tov on the verse, “you shall surely help along with him,” that Divine service must be done with the body, elevating it etc. (And this is also the idea of the Hayom Yom for Yud Shevat, that “it’s better to eat in order to daven,” and it concludes, “and this must be done with joy.”). Seemingly, how does all this accord with the idea that “you are dust and to dust you will return” – we know that “a change that reverts to its original state isn’t called a change,” thus it emerges that all the “changes” one effects in the body through his Divine service etc. aren’t lasting changes?! We can understand this based on the idea that there is one bone, the luz, that doesn’t “return to dust,” but remains intact. This causes the entire body and everything pertaining to it to be permanent and to endure, and therefore, the changes one effects through his Divine service etc. last forever.

    Synopsis

Since we’re talking on Motza’ei Simchas Torah, we can use means that make it possible for people faraway to hear the same words of Torah, which causes unity among them, through the “One Torah.” Since the Torah enclothes the Giver of the Torah, this unity comes from a level that totally transcends division. And especially coming after Shemini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, whose korban is “one bull, one ram.” And this must be expressed afterwards, too, on Isru Chag, and the entire year “in all your ways.” May it be Hashem’s will that everyone be blessed with a good and blessed year, with children, life, and sustenance in abundance, physically and spiritually, and continue with the service of “Yaakov going on his way,” with joy – which breaks all barriers, the barriers of one’s personal exile and the barriers of exile in the literal sense, and that we merit very soon the true and complete Redemption. This is the place to encourage Chitas, Keren Hashana, and the mivtzaim, especially Mivtza Ahavas Yisrael, and all of this should lead to the ultimate “Mivtza” – that “you shall be gathered one by one” by Hashem Himself, who will bring every Jew to Eretz Yisrael etc.

    Synopsis

The unique theme of Hoshana Rabbah is striking the aravos. And here we find something remarkable: the Sages established the calendar in such a way that Hoshana Rabbah never falls out on Shabbos, so that we never miss the custom of striking the aravos, even though they didn’t do so for the mitzvah of the four species, which is a Biblical obligation! The lesson is the greatness of a Jewish custom, like the custom of Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva these days etc. This custom involves specifically the aravah – which on the one hand is the simplest of all the four species, and on the other hand, it emphasizes (according to Nigleh) the theme of unity – they “grow in fraternity (achvana)” and this emphasizes the great ascent that is brought about by the descent etc. And this is also emphasized in the Yehi Ratzon after we say striking the aravos, where we talk about “sweeting the severities.”

    Synopsis

The connection between Sukkos and Tzivos Hashem: 1) Sukkah: Armies set up tents for their soldiers; similarly, when Hashem took the Jewish people (Hashem’s army) out of Egypt, He had them dwell in “booths” – and He commanded us to likewise dwell in the sukkah on Sukkos, and to do so joyously etc. (2) Lulav: When an army is victorious in battle, the soldiers go out to display their weapons etc.; similarly, the Midrash says that after the service of the Ten Days of Teshuvah and Yom Kippur, when “the Jewish people go out…with their lulavs and esrogs in their hands (their ‘weapons’) we know that we have been victorious.” And in truth, even the yetzer hara itself is happy over the fact that a Jew doesn’t listen to it, because its true mission isn’t to cause a Jew to stumble, chas v’shalom, but to test a Jew. (3) The time of our rejoicing: The joy (the joy of Torah and mitzvos – which requires military discipline to ensure it doesn’t turn into frivolity chas v’shalom) further shows how much a Jew is wise and strong, and isn’t affected by the schemes of the yetzer hara, to the point that he completely nullifies it.

    Synopsis

    1) Regarding the Alter Rebbe’s maamar Ush’avtem Mayim B’sason, the Tzemach Tzedek (who heard the maamar many times) said “we drew and drew,” (like the Gemara’s statement about Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva that “From there they would derive ruach hakodesh”), and he concluded, “it is until the coming of Moshiach.” This indicates that this applies to us; the time for it is during Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva, and the vessel for it is studying Chassidus. 2) There’s a law in Shulchan Aruch that when a Jew makes a positive resolution – he is given the reward for it immediately. And in our case, resolving to give tzedakah already brings about the reward – the hastening of the Redemption, to the extent that Moshiach can come immediately, even before havdalah…Some people argue that this is “wild talk,” but that is fitting because the whole concept of exile is a “wild thing;” the main thing is, what difference does it make what they think – the main thing is that the Moshiach should come immediately!

    Synopsis

We find that all four species are called by the name lulav, as we say in the bracha, “[Who commanded us with His mitzvos and commanded us] regarding taking the lulav.” Seemingly, since esrog has taste and smell – Torah and mitzvos – why is it secondary to lulav, which has taste but not smell? The reason is because mitzvos involve worldly matters, whereas Torah study primarily transcends worldly matters. Therefore, when a person spends part of his time in mitzvos, some of the physicality of the world inevitably sticks to him, so he doesn’t have the purity and loftiness of someone who is engaged exclusively in Torah. Therefore, when all four categories of the Jewish people come together – the mitzvah is called “lulav,” the Jew who is engaged only in Torah, and the bracha, which draws down from Above, is brought about by the one who is closer to Heaven. Practically speaking: since there are yeshivah students here who haven’t yet gone out into the world – their voice in particular should be heard…

    Synopsis

Our Sages tell us that “One who did not see the Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva never saw celebration in his life.” Thus, we can understand that it is only possible to see celebration – whatever celebration it may be – after one has seen Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva. The question is: Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva in the Beis Hamikdash began on the second night (because it doesn’t override Shabbos or Yom Tov); how then can the entire Sukkos, including the first night, be called “the time of our rejoicing?” We must therefore say that the joy of Simchas Beis Hasho’eiva on the second night is great that it has an effect the past, transforming retroactively to true joy. And this also is why Sukkos is also called “the festival of the ingathering:” The reason it is the time for gathering physical produce into the house is because it is a time of spiritual ingathering. Sukkos comes after the complete teshuvah of Yom Kippur, which retroactively transforms even the intentional sins of the past into merits. In this sense, one gathers every aspect of his life, even the intentional sins, into his Jewish domain – merits. And just as complete teshuvah has a retroactive effect, so does the complete joy elicited by such teshuvah retroactively transform the first night of Sukkos into true joy.

    Synopsis

The maamar of Chol Hamoed Sukkos 5707 explains the verse “And you shall take for yourselves on the first day, the fruit of the hadar tree, date palm fronds, a branch of a braided tree, and willows of the brook etc.” The Gemara’s states, “‘And you shall take’ – that there should be taking in the hand of each and every person,” but we must understand: “the first day” is a very high level; how can every Jew attain it, and already “on the first day” of Sukkos?! The maamar explains this based on the reason the mitzvah involves these particular four plants – because they all express the theme of unity: Esrog: (1) Esrog is an acronym אַל־תְּבוֹאֵנִי רֶגֶל גַּאֲוָה, “Let the foot of haughtiness not come with me,” that even though one “has taste and smell,” nevertheless he allows no room for haughtiness, nor even the “foot of haughtiness,” and therefore he can unite with others. (2) The esrog stays on its tree from year to year – because it is batel, it tolerates and grows from all the seasons and changes in the world. Lulav: the lulav is “kefus,” its leaves are united with one another. Hadas: Hadassim must have three leaves on one branch. Aravos: Are called achvana, which means brotherhood. And in addition to each specie’s individual expression of unity, the mitzvah is to bind them all together. Thus, we can understand how this mitzvah brings every Jew to the level of “First” – because bitul and unity are the vessel for attaining that level etc.

    Synopsis

Going milechatchila ariber applies especially to this year, which began on Shabbos, which is about rest and delight, when we refrain from work, to point that there is “no sadness on it,” and Hashem says, “Borrow on My account, and I will repay it,” and moreover, “there is no worry on it,” because “all your work is done.” When Rosh Hashana falls out on Shabbos, and we kept Shabbos fully, the point that we refrained even from blowing shofar, and we acted Shabbosdik in a manner of milechatchila ariber – that continues the entire year: “there is no sadness on it,” and “all your work is done.” And if one asks that seemingly it is necessary to “sow your field for six years” etc. – we tell him: You must go milechatchila ariber, and then – “strangers shall stand and pasture your sheep etc.”! Though this verse refers to the future era – we know the analogy given by the Rebbe Maharash that when we perform a mitzvah now – we have the reward immediately, just that it is locked in a box, but the One Who commands the mitzvah gives the box, along with the key, to the one who performs the mitzvah. Therefore, there is no room for worry! And just like the first day of Rosh Hashanah fell out on Shabbos, so, too, the first day of Sukkos (when everything that was “hidden” on Rosh Hashanah is revealed), and so, too Shemini Atzeres fall out on Shabbos. In terms of Divine service: when a Jew, even a small child, studies Torah or performs a mitzvah, he is “Shabbosdik” – removed from mundane matters, and feels uplifted.

    Synopsis

[This farbrengen took place at the height of the Yom Kippur War.] (1) During the summer we discussed what it says in the maamar [V’kibel Hayehudim] of 5627 on the verse, “Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings You have established strength…in order to put an end to enemy and avenger.” This was like “prophesying without knowing what he was prophesying” – it has now become clear that indeed a situation has arisen where it is necessary to “put an end to enemy and avenger,” which is possible in a manner where the enemy becomes a helper to the Jewish people etc. The service of birurim is achieved through tzedakah in particular, and when it is dispensed freely – as it says in Siddur im Dach, to freely dispense tzedakah to the poor on Erev Sukkos. The simple reason we’ve brought the issue to the fore lately is because there are those who, because “their inclination forced them” want to give back territory in Eretz Yisrael that Hashem miraculously gave the Jewish people etc. Therefore, when a crowd of multiple minyanim of Jews gather, and within the four cubits of the leader of the generation, and loudly declare that those people do not speak in the name of a single Jew (nor, in fact, do they speak in their own name), because “When He wished, He gave it to them,” and then, “when He wished, He took it away from them and gave it to us” – this will cause it to indeed be that way, and those arguments will be nullified etc. And when the crowd says “Amen,” that has an effect on them and on the world forever and ever. [The crowd loudly responds “Amen!”.] (2) We should utilize the hours remaining until Sukkos to increase in Torah and tzedakah, as it says, “Tzion shall be redeemed through justice and her penitent through tzedakah;” may we merit that Hashem will “spread over us the shelter (sukkah) of Your peace,” and “And I will grant peace in the Land, and you will lie down with no one to frighten [you],” and to continue the great joy throughout the entire year.
