Synopsis

Jewish education must begin with the foundations: (1) Establishing the connection to G-dliness and Yiddishkeit; (2) drawing holiness into the child’s daily life by performing the mitzvos; (3) becoming a Torah entity. In previous generations, children received the foundations at home; what remained for the cheders and yeshivahs was only to impart the third step – Torah knowledge. But these days, students come into the yeshivah lacking these foundations; therefore, the task of the yeshiva is to build them up from the “foundation” up to the “roof.” Without first building the foundation, it’s impossible to add walls and floors. Therefore, the first thing is to awaken within the students the essential spark of Yiddishkeit within them, and the belief in Hashem – and then to tell them that Yiddishkeit must be expressed through the practical mitzvos in daily life. Otherwise, Torah can become harmful to one who studies it without these foundations. [To be continued.]

    Synopsis

When the Alter Rebbe hired a young scholar to teach his son the Mitteler Rebbe, the young man asked the Alter Rebbe how to teach him. The Alter Rebbe replied (in his famous sing-song voice): We begin by teaching a child the Aleph-Beis; what is an Aleph? A dot above and a dot below, a Yud above, which is the soul, and a Yud below, which is the body – and through the line of fear of Heaven in the middle, they become one. Another allusion here is that the Yud above represents Hashem, Who transcends measure and limitation, and the Yud below represents the Jew. To connect with Hashem, a Jew must make himself humble like a “dot,” taking up no space; through this “line” of fear of Heaven and self-nullification, he connects to Hashem and becomes an Aleph. And this is also the Aleph of the giving of the Torah: the first letter of the Ten Commandments is an Aleph, and it must be the foundation and essence of a child’s education. In this way, when the child grows up and goes out into the world, he will have the ability to cause “I am Hashem your G-d” to be felt all around him.

    Synopsis

The Torah is Hashem’s “hidden treasure,” and He gives it to every Jew. However, the condition and preparation for receiving the Torah is to declare Na’aseh V’Nishma, “We will do and we will hear” – to keep the Torah practically and live one’s day-to-day life according to the Torah’s instructions. The highest expression of the Torah’s preciousness is not just by honoring a Sefer-Torah and keeping it from being disrespected and the like, but by living in such a way that in everything one does, even physical matters and bodily matters, it is evident that it is being done by someone who is connected to Torah. And this is especially important in the case of Jewish women and girls, as the Torah states – before the Torah was given, Moshe was commanded, “‘Thus shall you say to the house of Yaakov’ – this refers to the women”, and only afterwards, “‘and tell the sons of Yisrael’ – this refers to the men.” Because the Na’aseh V’Nishma of the men depends on the Na’aseh V’Nishma of the women.

    Synopsis

Before the giving of the Torah, there was a decree (a divide) between the higher and lower realms: “The higher beings shall not descend below, and the lower beings shall not ascend above.” But when the Torah was given, the decree was annulled, “and I will the One to go first” – “And Hashem descended upon Mount Sinai” [as it says in shishi of Parashas Yisro]. Hashem, the Highest Being, above Whom there is none other, descends Himself to the lowest world! This teaches us how to receive the Torah and how to teach it to others: it is specifically in a low place, and in a time and place of exile, that the Torah is revealed in all its strength! Therefore, the Torah is compared to water, that “descends from a high place to a low place,” and as the Mishna states, “One who keeps the Torah out of poverty,” i.e., without arrogance or ulterior motives, “will ultimately keep it out of wealth” – wealth in Torah as well as everything else.

    Synopsis

In sheini of Parashas Yisro, where Yisro tells Moshe “And you shall choose” judges to serve along with him (and this is the “section he added (Yiter) to the Torah, for which he was called Yisro) – a significant question arises: How is possible that Moshe, having been the shepherd of the Jewish people for sixty years (a role for which he was destined at birth), didn’t realize this on his own, while Yisro, having just arrived from Midian, did realize it, to the extent that the portion is called by Yisro’s name? The answer is that Moshe viewed the Jewish people on their level, in their state of being together with, and uplifted by, Moshe. From that perspective, Moshe was indeed correct. By contrast, Yisro looked at the Jewish people from the perspective of their state when Moshe was on a different plane, whether “on the mountain” or after Moshe’s passing. To ensure that the Jewish people could “come in peace” and survive even when Moshe was no longer with them, a different system had to be put in place. Since everything must go through Moshe – “everything was given to Moshe at Sinai” – that system had to begin through Moshe himself during his lifetime.

    Synopsis

On the verse [at the beginning of Parashas Yisro] “Yisro heard, etc.,” Rashi cites the teaching of our Sages, “What news did he hear that [made such an impression that] he came? – The splitting of the Sea and the war with Amalek.” Chassidus explains that the Gematria of Amalek is safek (“doubt”); by fighting against doubts, we cause even the “priest of Midian” to leave everything he has and come to the “desert” etc. The lesson is that when a Jew encounters doubts in Torah and Mitzvos, and he finds himself unable to nullify them, he must ignore them and not engage in any debates with them etc.; rather, he must resolve that as one with a Divine mission, “created only to serve my Maker,” has no time for that! As the verse says, “And he weakened Amalek etc.” Even if one can’t nullify the doubts, he must weaken them –disengaging from them so they do not distract him from his service to his Creator. And the victory is achieved by the “Men of Moshe” – those who are connected to the Nasi of the generation! As a result, even those in “Midian” hear about and recognize the victory over “Amalek,” and go to receive the Torah, drawing down abundant physical and spiritual blessings.

    Synopsis

The Tzemach Tzedek explains that the reason the Haftarah for Parashas Beshalach is one that describes a song of women (Devorah’s song) is because it was specifically the song of the women in the parashah that was with great joy, “with timbrels and dances.” And he concludes that, “all come from the dust” – everything depends on the woman. The lesson is that the atmosphere in the home depends specifically on the woman; she is the one who convinces her husband that everything comes from Hashem, “And Hashem your G-d will bless you in all that you do,” and that therefore, there is no need to chase after a livelihood or earning another dollar, which ends up detracting from Torah study etc.; in general, one shouldn’t strive for materiality and excesses, because “A man’s folly perverts his way” – such behavior causes a person’s “path to be perverted” – the money he worked so hard for ends up going G-d forbid to pay doctors and the like. Rather, the main thing must be the spirituality of the home, for Hashem to “dwell among them,” for the husband to study Torah with peace of mind, and for the woman to educate the children in the way of the Torah. In this way, the house is fitting for “the blessing of Hashem,” so that the money goes towards good things etc.

    Synopsis

In the previous farbrengen, we spoke about organizing gatherings for Tzivos Hashem on Tu B’Shvat. It’s necessary to explain the meaning of the day in terms suitable for the children, using examples and parables etc. And even when something is explained using parables, it is still part of the Torah of Truth), just that it’s clothed in garments to make it accessible for them (as explained regarding the “three thousand parables” of Shlomo Hamelech): Tu B’Shvat, the New Year for Trees, is associated with the seven species for which Eretz Yisrael is praised – “wheat and barley, grapes and figs and pomegranates…oil producing olives and honey” – which correspond to the seven Sefiros. In terms that children can understand, this means as follows: Eretz Yisrael belongs to the Jewish people, and even a small child understands that the only place he truly feels calm and comfortable is in his own home! Therefore, every Jew constantly hopes and yearns to return to his true home, to Eretz Yisrael. And it is a land that provides a Jew with all his needs, including necessities such as “wheat” and “barley” (used to make fine or coarse bread) and “grapes” (which cause joy and bring out hidden abilities – “when wine enters, a secret emerges”), and pleasures like “figs,” “pomegranates,” “oil producing olives,” and “honey.”

    Synopsis

In the last farbrengen, I used the expression “And Miriam sang,” even though the verse states [in revi’i of Parashas Beshalach], “And Miriam answered.” The reason is to negate the explanation of some commentators, that Miriam didn’t personally sing. (The commentators thus explain why indeed it says, “she answered,” unlike the verse, “And Devorah sang.”) This explanation does not accord with Rashi, who says, in the plain meaning of the verse, that just as “Moshe said the song to the men,” so, too, “Miriam said the song to the women.” As to the question of the immodesty of a woman’s voice – Rashi addresses this in his commentary on the verse, “This is my G-d and I will glorify Him” – “He revealed Himself in His glory to them, and they pointed at Him with their finger. By the sea, a maidservant saw what the prophets did not see.” Obviously, amidst such a Divine revelation, there was no concern arising from immodesty. The lesson is: Every woman has the power to reach the level of Miriam at the time of her song. Although Moshe was the “shepherd of the Jewish people,” including the women, and although after the giving of the Torah, everything comes through Moshe, nevertheless, when it came to “song” (and before the Torah was given), Miriam was inspired on her own to sing, and the women got it from her, not through Moshe. This is also a lesson for after the Torah was given – that in some respects, women are inspired on their own, and not through their husbands.

About The Daily Sicha -

From the publisher's feed

"The Daily Sicha" is a daily discourse of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Sichos for Sicha Yomis are chosen from throughout the thousands of hours of the Rebbe's talks, based on their appropriateness toward each day.
