23 years ago a rather unique moment happened as we saw the last fully English Premier League starting XI take to the field.
In the latest podcast from The Analyst, we take a look back to that era and how playing time for English players has declined since the competition's inception. We also take a look at some of the other Premier League starting XI's that have made history, as well as a glance across the top five leagues in Europe for their own records.
This podcast originally appeared as an article on The Analyst in February 2022.

Hitting the Premier League woodwork creates one of the greatest sounds on a football field as it produces cheers or jeers depending on who you support and how the thudding of either the post or crossbar influences the outcome for your team.
In the second episode of 'Stats Out Of Context', join Duncan Alexander and Graham Bell as they explore the world of the goalposts, with a journey from the very early days of the sport through to the modern era and how hitting the Premier League woodwork has had an effect on the game we see today.
And, of course, there's a Tony Yeboah mention.

When it comes to looking at who are the youngest Premier League managers, it conjured up the words of William Shakespeare. Because some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.
On the whole, the youngest Premier League managers step into the spotlight in unwanted situations, taking over teams in trouble or peril, and have to try lift the dressing rooms that they not too long beforehand were a part of as players. But, as we'll find out in this podcast, some of these fresh faces get to step into the breach on their own terms with a mixture of results.

Welcome to a brand new podcast series from The Analyst, where we take a single football metric (beginning in this first episode with assists) and look at the story behind the stats, diving into such topics as when was it invented? What does it mean? Why did it start being collected? And, most importantly, why do some people like and why do some people dislike them?
Join Graham Bell and Duncan Alexander as they explore the world of assists. Not just the humble servant to the goal, the assist has taken on a meaning of its own, in particular in the Premier League era. The pair bring you the story of its rise prominence, how the quest for the complete history of Premier League assists began and where the journey has taken us to this day, including some fascinating insights along the way.

By the time most of us hit our late 30’s, the thought of playing even a five-a-side game makes the knees so weak. The mind might be screaming yes, but the body will definitely say no. However for some professional footballers, those that will go on to become the oldest Premier League players – this isn’t a time to stop competing.

We're not sure if you’ve noticed over the past few seasons but it has been raining Serie A goals. You know, the league most people associate with low-scoring matches. But the fact is that each of the last three seasons have averaged more goals per game than any across the last 70 years.
So that really begs the question...what gives? Why is this happening? Well, luckily for us, Analyst Managing Editor Ollie Hopkins dove into the detail on The Analyst earlier in the month, and in his special ‘behind the article’ podcast, he joins me for a chat about his findings and perhaps why we should all be tuning our TVs to the Italian top flight with Serie A goals flooding in.
