Going into the NEW YEAR… a look at fear.

"In absence of clearly defined goals, we become strangely loyal to performing daily acts of trivia."
    -- John Lubbock

Some key thoughts on goals for the new year. I am not going to tell you how to make and keep goals other than writing them down and daily reflecting and praying on them. There seems to be a magic pull a supernatural drive when you do that.

The unexamined life is not worth living, but the unplanned life is not worth much either… Garth Heckman Ryan

your goals should be your alarm clock Garth Heckman

Removing clutter and simplifying your life is one of the most effective strategies for goal acceleration.

People with goals live longer and have less disease and stress in their lives. having something to live for helps prolong a happy and successful life. Goals give purpose and the body becomes immune to a lot of problems simply by having something worth living for. Make goals accordingly.

I  expect to spend the rest of my life in the future, so i want to be reasonably sure what kind of future it is going to be.  that is my reason for planning. charles kettering, industrialist-1950

Know the outcome and keep it laser focused.
    Goals
A teacher asked a student “if you mowed 12 lawns at $8.50 each, what would you have?”  The student said without hesitation, “A new bicycle!”

    Kindness
You cannot do a kindness too soon, because you never know how soon it will be TOO LATE.Kindness Somerset Maughan's (English novelist, playwright, and short-story writer) mother was an extraordinarily beautiful woman married to an extraordinarily ugly man. When a family friend once asked how such a beautiful woman could have married such an ugly man, she replied, "He has never once hurt my feelings."

    Eph. 4:31, 32
31Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and tender-hearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.

    How to be kind?
    Look at verse 31…
    Get rid = GK Ah-hee-ro
To lift up and give away. It’s hard to be kind if you are dealing with bitterness, rage, anger outcry, slander and malice.

When you are dealing with your own stuff, it ’s hard to deal with other people who have stuff!

Be kind and tenderhearted: live in the moment and remember God is kind to you in your bad times.

When you cut people slack it makes it easier. A guy cuts you off? Maybe he had a phone call that his son is sick or hurt.

A person is in line with 22 items in the express lane… maybe they didn’t see the sign. You don’t always see the signs!

Live in their moment as yourself!

Realize there is always a way to show kindness.
God always showed kindness… the woman caught in adultery. He had every right to pick up a stone and throw it at her. It was the law, he was perfect and he could stand in judgement… But instead he chose kindness in a unique way.

Kindness, Wisdom There was a sheep-raising farmer. Next to him was another farmer who was raising wheat, children, and large dogs. The dogs were scaring the sheep. The sheep farmer did not know what to do. He could shoot the dogs, poison them, be nasty to his neighbor, or even take him to court.      He prayed about it....      As soon as some new lambs were born he gave each of the neighbor's children one of the lambs as a pet. The children were thrilled. But their father could no longer allow his dogs to run rampant as before. He restrained them for the sake of the pet lambs. The two farmers became friends. Kindness won.

Why are we at where we are at?

    Reading a book called Alchemy-
Why do women wear make up?
How does the price of a car change :
      —  a guy wearing a marron sweater vest, smoking a   —  pipe and with a british accent,
       —   A guy in his underwear
        —   A 22 year old blonde
    Why do kids start smoking?
Why do suicides happen in batches?

    POWERPOINT 2
OUR LIFE IS WHERE ITS AT Based on our beliefs –

BASICALLY - we choose that which we feel is less painful.  So we think that the pain of going back to school is worse then the pain of staying at a dead end job!

TALKING TO SOME TEENAGE BOYS IN A HIGH SECURITY PRISON… WHY ARE YOU HERE?
BECAUSE YOU CHOSE WHAT WAS EASY!

    Romans 12:1
Ro 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship.
Ro 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Example: we come to church and we do not engage in worship because we say “what matters is inside – no God calls us to sacrifice our bodies and engage in worship, engage in serving, engage in others.  It is not enough to say “I am a Christian and I gave my heart to Jesus – God clearly calls us here to give our whole body”
We are to offer our energy, time, talent and gifts to God!

It’s spiritual to be physical in our act of worship. i.e. this is our spiritual act of worship!

Ro 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind

So we see two parts here. The body must be willing to act its way into a new mindset and the body must be willing to transform its mind.
i.e. you have to do the physical work to transform your mind.

    John C thanks for listening…

    Topics for the new year!

Jim and Marry were both patients in a Mental Hospital.  One day, while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Jim suddenly jumped into the deep end.  He sank like a stone to the bottom and stayed there.  Mary promptly jumped in to save him.  She swam to the bottom and pulled Jim out.  When the medical director became aware of Mary’s heroic act, he immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as he now considered her to be mentally stable.  When he went to tell her the news, he said, “Marry, I have good news and bad news.  The good news is you’re being discharged because since you where able to jump in and save the life of another patient, I think you’ve regained your senses.  The bad news is that Jim, the patient you saved, hung himself in the bathroom with the belt of his robe.  I am so sorry, but he’s dead.”  Mary replied, “He didn’t hang himself, I put him there to dry.”

Even when life is not what you expect, if your life is in Gods hands and you are serving him, he has the outcome planned, in place and with perfect timing.

    1 Samuel 16
Jesse is asked by the prophet Samuel to bring his sons in… one of them will be anointed King.
Now before we talk about David the runt of the litter, lets first think this over. God has planned way before the beginning of time to anoint David to be King. He made sure that he was trained in the wilderness watching sheep, fighting off lions and bears saving stubborn little sheep. He had David born the least of the brothers to teach him empathy and patience. He would be forgotten to show himself again that his father didn’t think much of him, but that did not matter, what mattered is what God thought of him. God had a plan in place, a time in place and a purpose all waiting. DAVID DIDN’T SEE IT - BUT HE TRUSTED GOD AND SERVED HIM FAITHFULLY.

    God saw David despised
    God saw David forgotten
God saw David as a shepherd
God saw David as the youngest
God saw all that David was and was not… he knew his trials and troubles and his worry and questions…
But it didn’t change his plan for David… David couldn’t see the outcome, but it didn’t change the outcome.

You may not see the outcome
But keep serving God and he will take care of it.

This New Year it is easy to get caught up in all the reasons we feel like “it” won’t happen… what ever that “it” is. But why not focus on the fact that God knows everything, is in the control room of your life as long as you serve him and he will take care of you regardless of what circumstances seem to say.

Years ago we were serving as youth pastors in Seattle and we were very poor. The salary was not much, but we knew we were supposed to be there. One day I came home and my wife was very depressed. She said she was so mad that we were so poor she couldn’t even go out and get ice cream for the boys and herself. I tried to console her and said “God sees where we are at”… yeah that didn’t exactly appease the situation. She had fixed a simple dinner and as we were sitting down eating a knock came on the door. I went and opened it up and there was a man from our church standing there. He worked for a large grocery chain and said he was passing by and had all this ice cream he needed to get rid of before it melted. It was given to him from the vendor as giveaways. It was not only ice cream, it was all of our favorite flavors. 4 gallons, 4 different flavors served right at dinner time. That is when I really started to realize, God knows.
Head into this year, trusting that God knows.

Don’t forget what Christmas is about…
A young millennial couple with a far left outlook on life were driving around at Christmas time and were looking at Christmas lights… when they came upon a church with a nativity scene outside in their front… the young man said loudly to his girlfriend… isn’t that just like the church, trying to push Jesus on us during Christmas.

    What is Christmas about?

The British Author Peter Marshal wrote:“When
Christmas doesn’t make your heart swell up until it nearly bursts and fill
your eyes with tears and make you all soft and warm inside then you will
know that something inside of you is dead.”

What is Christmas? What does it do to you?

    Christmas
I stopped believing in Santa Claus when my mother took me to see him in a department store, and he asked for my autograph.
Shirley Temple, Prelude Press Catalog, p.44

What is the magic of Christmas-
What do you want for Christmas… I want a bike,
    I want a video game
    I want a baking set
… I want to see my Daddy.

What is Christmas? It is a child coming down to a virgin, born in a barn, living a sinless perfect life and dying a terrible death so that we might have forgiveness, life and a relationship with God the father.

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus could have been Black:       1 He called everyone "brother"       2. He liked Gospel       3. He couldn't get a fair trial.        But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:       1. He went into His Fathers business.       2. He lived at home until he was 33.       3. He was sure his Mother was a virgin and his mother was sure he was God.       But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Italian:       1. He talked with his hands.       2. He had wine with every meal.       3. He used olive oil.       But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been a Californian:       1. He never cut his hair.       2. He walked around barefoot all the time       3. He started a new religion.       But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus could have been Irish:       1. He never got married.       2. He was always telling stories.       3. He loved green pastures.       But the most compelling evidence of all - 3 proofs that Jesus could have been a woman:       1. He fed a crowd at a moment's notice when there was no food.       2. He kept trying to get a message across to a bunch of men who just didn't get it.       3. And even when he was dead, He had to get up because there was more work to do.

My own:  It is possible that That Jesus was a youth pastor-
He hung out with teenage boys
He always seemed to be eating or drinking
He broke a lot of rules
    He cried over kids

Muhammad Ali said “I am the greatest”

Jesus made some startling and very exclusive claims. For example he said: “I am the Way the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (Jn 14:6) I often hear people say that “All religions are basically the same – they all worship the same God”. But I DON’T agree. Because Jesus doesn’t leave us that option.

ALBERT SCHWEITZER the famous liberal theologian and one of the 113 Swiss Nobel Prize winners: “He was a deluded fanatic who futilely threw away his life in blind devotion to a mad dream. There is nothing more negative than the critical study of the life of Christ.” Hardly a Christian answer! 2. 2. GEORGE BERNARD SHAW – the famous atheist and writer who said “Jesus was a man who was sane until Peter hailed him as the Christ and who then became a monomaniac…his delusion is a very common delusion among the insane…” 2. 3. Ask the question to a practising MUSLIM and you will get the answer that Jesus was simply a great prophet , second only to Mohammed and that he was not divine. But there have been other answers. 3 George W Bush - President of the United States As God’s only Son, Jesus came to Earth and gave His life so that we may live. 4. CS Lewis And in his book Mere Christianity, C.S. Lewis made this poignant statement, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic--on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg--or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us."

Identity Theft – who do you say that I am?

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”
14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”
15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

If Jesus was in front of you right now and asked you that question… what would be the level of ease you would have in answering that.
What I mean is… if you say yes- and you really mean it then your life is radically different than most peoples lives today. The way you live, give, act, think are all different.
OR IF YOU SAY YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD… and you know your life is not really any different because of that statement you feel awkward, your mind fills with excuses and you immediately want to tell Jesus you will try harder and do better.

Simple question today men…. Who do you say Jesus is?

    LIVE IT!
