In this week's Dental Handoff, Dr. Kelly Tanner is joined by dental hygienist and artist, Ashley Kear! Ashley details how she found her passion for both dental hygiene and for art, and the unique way those two interests have come together in her career.

Ashley Kear has been a hygienist for 17 years and graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University’s Dental Hygiene program. She works part time clinically and spends the rest of her time I work on her Etsy shop and other artistic endeavors. Ashley has been drawing for as long as she can remember and decided a few years ago - along with some coaxing from friends and family -  to try to turn it into a business!

Ashley sells dental themed items and works with her partner, Julie who is a dental assistant and owns The Dental Gift Shop.

She also holds a Master of Science in Health Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, where she is currently a Professor in the Orthodontic Department. Dr. Tüfekçi is a Board Certified orthodontist and maintains an intramural practice in Richmond, VA.

Dr. Tüfekçi details her journey to dentistry from stemming an early childhood interest in the game "Operation" all the way through to her life as an orthodontist today. Along the way, she imparts plenty of wisdom from from her professional experience along to Dental Handoff listeners.

In this week's Dental Handoff, Dr. Kelly is joined by speaker, consultant, author, and owner of Oral Cancer Consulting, Susan Cotten! They discuss the importance of early screening for HPV and oral cancers and how Susan developed the "Cotten Method" to help do just that for her patients! Known for her expertise on HPV, oral cancer, and head and neck evaluation, she developed the "Cotten Method", a dental practice operating system and screening method designed to increase confidence in screening, aid in reducing the risk of liability, and increase early detection. Susan is a consultant and Dental Workgroup Lead for the Alliance for HPV Free Colorado, a director for Dental Codeology Consortium, a Regional Coordinator and RDH Advisory board member for the Oral Cancer Foundation, and a 2018 Sunstar/RDH Award of Distinction recipient. Susan is a 2020 recipient of the Ethyl Covington award and 2018 Outstanding Contribution award, both from the Colorado Dental Hygienists' Association. She has organized countless free screening events, including screenings at the Denver Broncos Health and Wellness Expo.

Stephanie has been a clinical dental hygienist for over 14 years. She is a Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist providing both in-office and virtual ergonomics consulting and coaching to dental professionals. She also provides CE to dental and dental hygiene associations on the topic of ergonomics. Her experience as a clinical dental hygienist and ergonomics expert has allowed her to recognize the unique challenges of practicing pain-free in the dental setting. Stephanie believes that by learning effective strategies to optimize proper ergonomics both inside and outside the operatory, dental professionals can practice pain-free and ensure career longevity.

Paul Feuerstein, DMD graduated from SUNY Brook during the '60s studying chemistry, engineering, computer science and MUSIC. He is a 1972 graduate of UNDMJ (now Rutgers) and maintains a general practice in Massachusetts.He is the Editor In Chief of Dentistry Today, author of over 250 technology articles and lectures at many national and local dental meetings. His work with CAD/CAM helped develop the LAVA C.O.S. intraoral scanning system. He was named Clinician of the Year at the 2010 Yankee Dental Congress and is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in General Dentistry at Tufts University. He is also CDO of the Cellerant Consulting Group. In 2020, he was named as one of the top 100 dental professionals in the world by the Global Summits Institute!

Hailing from Virginia Beach, Virginia, Patrina is a lover of food, travel, and all things health and wellness. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Dental Hygiene from Old Dominion University in 2012. After an awe-inspiring CE course, she decided to further her education and pursue her dream of becoming a dentist. In 2019 she accepted a seat in the University of Nevada – Las Vegas’s School of Dental Medicine’s class of 2023. It has always been her passion to help people.

Patrina's entire career in dentistry has been a journey of progressing as a dental professional, first as a hygienist, then as a dental student, and soon as a licensed dentist and AEGD Resident. Patrina shares her insights from her journey through dental field as she approaches the final steps in becoming a licensed dentist.
