  • Def Leppard Speaking In Slang

In 1996 as the Grunge Movement was burning out instead of fading away, Def Leppard decided to take a page out of the notebook of famed fan, the late Kurt Cobain, and make a modern rock album.

In this episode Nik and Duncan both had never heard the song before. The former is a bit of a Def Leppard fan but the latter is not. They both get a taste of some new music from a classic band on the vanguard of hair metal.

  • John Paul Jones (of Led Zeppelin) and Diamanda Galas Get Atheletic with The Sporting Life

In 1994, just one month before the Landmark "reunion" album of Unledded by Page and Plant was about to drop, John Paul Jones, the man whose phone number they couldn't quite remember, beat them to the punch.

Release in September, John Paul Jones and Diamanda Galas released The Sporting Life, an album of all new tunes instead of live versions of classics. It's not the kind of thing that many would expect out of classic rock fans' favorite mandolin player, but check it out with Nik and Duncan!

  • Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers Stand Firm

Fresh off of their success behind their debut album, Jimmy Page and Paul Rodgers head back into the studio to record another record from The Firm.

    Never heard of them?

Don't worry, most other folks haven't either. Page and Rodgers (later claimed to have) started this band with the intent of just doing a two albums and tours, but does it seem like there's a lot more to have milked from this old cow?

Join Nik and Duncan  as they dive right into those grooves and they'll answer the eternal question: Spin it or Bin it?

  • Kiss's Carnival of What Now?

In the waning days of 1995, Kiss entered the studio with the current line up in order to record their magnum opus: Carnival Of Souls.

What makes this odd is at the same time, Kiss was in negotiations for a reunion. So, how did this album even get recorded? Released? And subsequently forgotten?

Nik and Duncan go deep on Carnival of Souls, one of the most divisive albums in the Kiss catalog.

  • The End of the Rainbow

In the year of our lord 1995, Ritchie Blackmore reformed what would later be termed Rainbow and released Strangers In Us All which turned out to be the final album under the Rainbow moniker.

It features and entirely new lineup. Duncan and Nik take this album on track by track and ask if you should spin it or bin it?

This features the first album on The DMA Podcast that neither of us had ever heard prior to recording. Have some fun as we check it out.

  • It's Hard To Win At Blackjack (Featuring Michael Bolton and Bruce Kulick)

After coming off of the Meat Loaf Tour, the Kulick Brothers had a chance to do a couple shows with Michael Bolton, then Bolotin. This ended up becoming an idea to form a band. Bob Kulick decided to pass, but Bruce Kulick said yes.

A rhythm section was put together and before they knew it, they were signed to a label and their first album was released. Here it is in all its glory. The eponymous debut of Blackjack.

Did they beat the house or did they bust?

Double down with us and find out.

  • The Seventh Line of Cocaine with Black Sabbath and Glenn Hughes

In January 1986, Warner Brothers Records released what was to be the first solo album by Heavy Metal God, Tony Iommi, but just like when "Born Again" was dropped, Don Arden and the label insisted this record be called Black Sabbath.

This was the fourth album released by Iommi and friends since 1980 featuring their third vocalist and second alumni of Deep Purple. Backing up Iommi's riffs and songs were Eric Singer (later of Kiss, Lita Ford, and Alice Cooper), Glenn Hughes (late of Deep Purple and Trapeze, later of Black Country Communion and California Breed), and Dan "The Beast" Spitz.

If you've never heard of this album, check it out with Nik Cameron and Duncan Evans as they give you the history of the recording, the tour, and a track by track analysis.

  • Meat Loaf's Messy Dessert

In 1984 Meat Loaf late of Bat Out of Hell Fame, released his first album without the benefit of his writing partner, Jim Steinman, for the most part.

The album was buttressed by the fiery guitarwork of Bob Kulick along with cameo appearances by Roger Daltrey and Clare Torry.

This album is definitely a mixed bag of rock anthems, but is it something you should take the 45 minutes of your life to listen to? Come find out with Duncan and myself.

  • Does The Headless Cross Need A Head?

Join us as we dissect the forgotten Black Sabbath Album The Headless Cross.

In 1988, Tony Iommi's Black Sabbath had been dropped from two record labels following The Eternal Idol, but I.R.S. Records came calling to have Iommi record a new Black Sabbath album without any intrusion.

As it had been with the previous four records, Black Sabbath again underwent significant lineup changes. Gone were Eric Singer on Drums and Bob Daisley on bass guitar to be replaced by Cozy Powell, late of Rainbow, Jeff Beck, and Whitesnake, on drums and Laurence Cottle on bass as a session player only. He was replaced by Neil Murray, late of Whitesnake and the Gary Moore Band while the band were on tour.

Look out for a surprise guest appearance by Queen's Brian May!

This album features members of Whitesnake, Black Sabbath (obviously), Rainbow, and Jeff Beck. These players have quite the pedigree!

Should you check it out or toss it in the bin? Listen to find out.

About The Department of Metal Antiquities

From the publisher's feed

As a musical genre, heavy metal (and all it's sub-genres) has only existed for 50 years, but in that time there have been a great many happenings that we have collectively forgotten.
