The Dirt Path Sermon Podcast

What if admitting you're afraid isn't a failure of faith but an act of faith?

Gideon has watched God reduce his army from 32,000 soldiers to just 300. Now, on the eve of battle against the massive Midianite army, God tells Gideon to attack. There's just one problem: Gideon is afraid.

But in Judges 7:9-15, God doesn't shame Gideon for his fear. He already knows it's there. Instead, God invites Gideon to admit it, keep moving in obedience, and discover that God is already at work in the very place Gideon is afraid to go.

And that's where a tumbling loaf of barley bread enters the story.

In this sermon, Pastor Jason explores Gideon's fear, faith, and struggle to trust God when the odds seem impossible. If you're dealing with fear or anxiety, questioning whether your faith is strong enough, facing something you don't feel prepared for, or simply trying to take your next step with Jesus, Gideon's story offers some much-needed encouragement.

You don't have to pretend you're fearless for God to use you. God already knows what you're afraid of. Bring your fear to Him, trust Him with it, and take the next step.

Our hearts and minds want to know where we stand with God. Often, instead of measuring with God's standard, we look at our neighbor to see how we stack up. If we are better or worse than them, our perception is impacted. Pastor Jason brings a word from Galatians 6:1-5 about the measuring stick matters.

Followers of Jesus are called to walk in the victory through faith in His name. But temptations attack us like skilled warriors, striking our most vulnerable points. There are habits, pain, and emotions that rule our minds like tyrants. Facing these enemies often leave us feeling nothing like winners. Is this how we are meant to live? Pastor Jason shares from Isaiah 49:24-26.

What do you do when God is calling you forward, but you’re not sure you’re ready?

Joshua knew that feeling. Moses was gone. The responsibility of leading God’s people now rested on his shoulders, and the future included challenges he had never faced before. Yet God didn’t tell Joshua to become another Moses. He gave him something better, a promise: “The LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

In this sermon from Joshua 1:1–9, Pastor Jason Barnett explores what it really means to “be strong and courageous.” Biblical courage isn’t pretending you aren’t afraid or convincing yourself that you’re strong enough. It comes from trusting God’s presence, staying rooted in His Word, and taking the next faithful step.

Whether you’re a new Christian learning how to follow Jesus, a longtime believer who feels spiritually stuck, or someone sensing God calling you into something new, Joshua’s story is a reminder that you don’t have to have everything figured out before you move forward.

You may not know what waits across the Jordan. You may wonder whether you’re qualified for what God is asking you to do. But your confidence doesn’t have to rest in your own strength.

Be strong. Be courageous. And trust the God who promises to go with you.
