Welcome back from the Holidays, hope you had a wonderful time and Happy New Year!  We have special treat, in this week's episode we have Cullen Gilchrist, CEO and Co-Founder of Union Kitchen with headquarters in Washington, DC and six stores throughout the DC metro area and a distribution channel delivering their products to other grocery stores.  Union Kitchen is a food business accelerator that helps start and grow successful food CPG (consumer package good) businesses in the DC area.  Cullen grew up in the south coast of Massachusetts, near New Bedford playing sports and ended up attending Dartmouth College and playing defensive end for their football team.  He started working in the food industry while in college and decided to make it a career, having several jobs in Boston after college and after a few years moved down to DC in 2010.  It all began with him getting a shared kitchen space, and finding a problem and solving it!  He loves supporting smart people and building businesses in food so much so that they now have ownership in over 120 CPG companies, bringing in about 10 new companies quarterly and 40 annually.  They are building a fund to invest in later stage food CPG companies, a larger facility, and new stores!  Cullen shares the importance of having humility and how resiliency is 75% of the equation!  You cannot miss this fun-filled episode!

In this week's episode we have Luke Silverman, Co-Founder and CEO of Bark Social!  Bark Social is the first "dog bar" in the Mid-Atlantic region that will be opening its first location soon in North Bethesda, Maryland in the Pike & Rose development!  We chatted about how out of college he started his own wine business and lived in Tuscany, Italy, he worked in Hollywood on several successful TV hit franchises such as The Bachelor, The Bachelorette and American Idol, and he loves to travel having visited 48 US states and 35 countries.  He shares how it is to raise capital from investors and what is needed, what he learned working at a young age in the hospitality industry, and how you need to create opportunities for your team.  Him and his team have created an amazing business concept you NEED to visit if you live in the DMV, especially if you have a four legged fury friend!

Raj Aggarwal is the Founder and President of Provoc with headquarters in Washington, DC!  They are a strategic marketing communication company that focuses on dismantling systemic racism and ending major diseases.  Raj's parents are from India and he was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Maryland.  He shares how growing up he did not feel like he fit being an immigrant from a different background in a not so diverse community.  Eventually he created his own community and a place where people felt they belonged while attending George Washington University and becoming one of the largest and most well known party promotional groups hosting South Asian events in the country.  A year or two after college graduation he started Provoc focusing on design and marketing.  He mentions that in business you need to keep it simple and not over complicate things.  Raj shares about his period of addiction and how his work ethic he learned from his dad kept him productive and accountable, work was his salvation during his addiction.  There are going to be many ups and downs but failure is going to be your greatest teacher, you are going to learn more from your failures than anything else and always remember to keep the faith!

In this week's episode we have Lynda Ellis, Owner, President, and CEO of Capitol Concierge with headquarters in North Bethesda, Maryland!  It is a global concierge company that takes care of everything.  She was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada and did not leave the area until she was 22 years old.  Lynda was raised by a single father who was born in Belfast, Ireland and taught her many valuable lessons starting at a young age that you always give back to the community and you can do anything you want to do as long as you work hard for it, if you need more money go work, and he would always tell her you live in the most wonderful country in this world and you need to respect and appreciate it!  Entrepreneurship and hospitality runs in her blood.  At 12 years old she started her first endeavor, babysitting.  She later lived in Tokyo, Japan for around 9 years and worked in multiple roles.  Afterwards, she moved to San Antonio, Texas and went back to college and started a novelty business she ultimately sold to Neiman Marcus.  Had a great career in an instructional technology company for over 20 years and mentions how it all led to Capitol Concierge.  Lynda shares how you need to listen and genuinely care about the other person.  She mentions why you should support your employees and the importance of giving back since there is no way you can give as much as you receive!  An all around terrific episode you do not want to miss!

Ana-Maria Jaramillo is the Owner and Founder of Voz Speech Therapy and Co-Founder of La Tejana in Washington, DC!  She is a bilingual speech language pathologist with Voz Speech Therapy, helping children increase their quality of life by assisting them with their feeding, swallowing, and communication skills primarily working with children from 1-5 years of age.  Both of her parents are from Colombia but she was born and raised in Texas, having growing up in McAllen, TX after 8 years old.  The Rio Grande Valley region in Texas was such a huge influence on her that during the pandemic she decided to bring Tex-Mex breakfast tacos to the DC metro area and started La Tejena, and it all started with tortillas!  She shares how everyone should ask themselves why they are doing what they do, and to be fearless in business and ruthless in marketing.  Ana-Maria mentions how one of the most important things you can do for yourself is to realize your worth, and takes us behind the scenes of how Voz Speech Therapy was started in 2018 and everything she went through!

In this week's episode we have Pramod Raheja, CEO of Airgility with offices in College Park, Maryland!  They do artificial intelligence and autonomy for unmanned robotics systems, basically they build robots and do AI in them.  Growing up he lived in different places until he was 12 when he moved to the DMV area and has been here ever since.  His love of airplanes and spaceships started at the young age of 4, he would receive in the mail a science kit of the month that he always looked forward to.  He began taking flying lessons while attending the University of Maryland and became an airline pilot after college and still continues to fly after 34 years all while building several companies.  He sees entrepreneurs like athletes who should be coached, and have someones who's only vested interest is for you to be at the top of your game.  He shares about a system he used with his children called TED Talks Tuesday, where they would discuss TED Talks and it helped them become lifelong learners.  Pramod mentioned how you should focus on what you are good at, you will become so much more efficient and not waste time!  Talks about an important rule I complete agree with which is sell first, sell and see if you have a market first that is why sales and revenue is the top line of a financial statement - focus on driving sales and the top line!  He shares how it all starts with your mind, be positive and believe in yourself!

Iris Veronica Jimenez is Chef, Culinary Director, and Managing Partner of La Casita Pupuseria with five locations in the DMV area!  They have deep-rooted traditions in Central American culture and cuisine, and believers that food is a universal language that brings people together.  We chat about the origins of the restaurant which it all started with her parents who emigrated from El Salvador.  The family comes from a long line of multi-generational food entrepreneurs. It started in the United States with the opening of a Latin market called El Gavilan Grocery in Mount Pleasant in Washington, DC, my old neighborhood where I grew up.  That grocery store eventually transitioned into multiple restaurants. Iris shares how we all need to focus, especially starting out - you cannot be all thing to all people.  She talks about the significance of listening to your customers and changing with their wants and needs.  Mentions how we are in an ever changing world with many things constantly moving and therefore we can never stay static; we need to continue to evolve!
