  • 167 - DC Water's Innovative Approach with David Gadis of DC Water

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we meet David Gadis, CEO and General Manager of DC Water to discuss the company's mission and accomplishments. As a leading provider of drinking water and wastewater treatment services, DC Water serves over 2 million customers in the Washington, D.C. area and surrounding counties. The company's wastewater treatment plant is one of the largest and most advanced in the world, processing over 1 billion gallons of wastewater daily. Additionally, DC Water produces a fertilizer product made from treated wastewater, which is sold to local farmers, landscaping companies, and restoration projects.

David highlights the company's efforts to improve water quality in the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. The Anacostia River, previously rated as an "F" grade, has improved significantly due to DC Water's efforts, now approaching a "C" grade. The company's deep tunnel project has also reduced flooding in the district and improved the Potomac River's water quality, making it now healthy and fishable. This achievement can be attributed to the reduction of wastewater entering the river, allowing it to "refresh itself."
DC Water is committed to creating a sustainable energy system. The company has chosen to build a deep tunnel project and is now reusing wastewater energy to heat and cool its headquarters building. Furthermore, DC Water harvests rainwater from its rooftop and parking lots to reuse for non-potable purposes.
David shares his personal story, discussing his background and how it has shaped his career. He is not originally from the DMV area but grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana, where his father worked at the Indianapolis Water Company for over 40 years. David is a third-generation water professional and has worked in the industry since college. He credits his father with teaching him about goal setting and key performance indicators, which he still uses in his work.
He emphasizes the importance of setting goals and reviewing them regularly, highlighting his experience as a college basketball player. He shares how his father taught him leadership skills, which helped him improve his game and achieve success. He also discusses the importance of education and how it can aid in overcoming unexpected setbacks.
Some key takeaways from David's experience include:
    * Setting clear goals and tracking progress is crucial for success
    * Leadership skills can be developed through experience and guidance from others
    * Giving people grace, empathy, and sympathy can lead to greater success and teamwork
    * Education is important and should be prioritized, especially in case of unexpected setbacks or changes in plans.
David Gadis's story is a testament to the importance of setting goals, perseverance, and education. As the CEO of DC Water, he is committed to ensuring that the company continues to provide high-quality water treatment services while also making a positive impact on the environment.

In a digital age where news consumption has become a ubiquitous part of our daily lives, the media plays a crucial role in shaping our perceptions and influencing our opinions. However, with the rise of clickbait headlines and emotional stories designed to attract viewer attention, the line between fact and fiction has become increasingly blurred. In this episode we will delve and explore her perspective on the negative impact of constant negative news on mental health, the role of news organizations in providing a balanced representation of the world, and the importance of telling meaningful stories about people making a positive impact in their communities.

In addition to highlighting the importance of good news media, Laura shares her own personal experience as a journalist, which was shaped by an innate curiosity about news and current events. From setting up a camera in their kitchen to practicing reporting to internships at local

stations, her journey as a journalist is a testament of her passion for storytelling and commitment to making a beneficial influence.

She believes that there is a niche for good news media and that newsrooms are getting smarter about finding balance and telling more positive stories. By providing a platform for uplifting and inspiring content, news organizations can not only promote social change but also contribute to a more positive and hopeful global narrative.

  • 164 - Trailblazing Men's Grooming with Michael Gilman of Grooming Lounge

Join us on The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla as we showcase the inspiring story of Michael Gilman, the Founder and Owner of Grooming Lounge, a pioneering men's grooming brand that's been making waves since 1999 with headquarters in the DMV.

With a humble beginning as an e-commerce business, Grooming Lounge has grown into a successful and respected brand, offering a range of high-quality products and services that cater to the unique needs of men. Lets dive into Mike's journey, from humble beginnings to entrepreneurial success.
He established a niche in men's grooming when Mike and his wife decided to launch Grooming Lounge. They recognized a gap in the market – a lack of products and services that catered specifically to men's grooming needs. With a passion for entrepreneurship, they developed a business plan that focused on creating a welcoming, non-intimidating environment for men to explore and discover new grooming products. Initially, the
company started as an e-commerce business, with a store in Washington DC and an online platform selling men's grooming products.
Interestingly, Grooming Lounge's e-commerce platform was built using Yahoo's e-commerce services. Mike emphasized the importance of this initial investment, stating that it allowed them to establish a strong online presence and focus on developing their brand.
Mike's personal story is just as inspiring. Growing up in Rockville, Maryland, he was involved in athletics and developed leadership skills through sports and other activities. However, it wasn't until later in life that he discovered his interest in business and entrepreneurship. Mike's major in journalism took him to different places, but eventually, he returned to the DC area to launch Grooming Lounge with his wife.
Grooming Lounge's journey is a testament to the power of innovation, hard work, and dedication. By recognizing a niche in the market and developing a unique e-commerce platform, Michael Gilman was able to establish a successful and respected brand. As we continue to follow
Grooming Lounge's growth and evolution, we're excited to see what the future holds for this trailblazing men's grooming brand.

  • 163 - Shaking Up Electric Vehicle Charging with Nanbo Liu of OpenGrid Technologies

In a recent episode of The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla, Nanbo Liu, Co-Founder of OpenGrid Technologies, shared his insights on the company's innovative approach to electric vehicle (EV) charging. OpenGrid Technologies with headquarters in Washington, DC has developed a unique solution that simplifies the build and operation of Level 3 DC fast charging stations for commercial retail locations, particularly grocery-anchored properties.

Nanbo shares his personal story, discussing his background and entrepreneurial experiences. Born in China, Nanbo moved to the US at 18, where he attended the University of Toledo and studied finance and international business. He credits his international upbringing and experiences with helping him run his business effectively, particularly when it comes to dealing with global supply chains and international teams.
OpenGrid Technologies has a simplified and sustainable solution that achieves this by incorporating lithium-ion batteries into the charging stations, making them more sustainable and a turnkey solution for commercial property managers. The company takes care of the equipment, installation, and operation of the charging stations, recovering its costs through revenue from drivers who use the network. This model is similar to that of banks and ATM's, where the bank covers the costs of equipment and installation, and recovers its investment through
    transaction fees.
Nanbo highlighted their competitive advantage and the significant differences between OpenGrid's approach and that of Tesla, which requires substantial capital expenditures for equipment and installation. OpenGrid's plug-and-play solution eliminates the need for complex and expensive setup, making it an attractive option for commercial properties. Furthermore, OpenGrid's stations are compatible with multiple electric vehicle brands, allowing drivers to charge their vehicles regardless of the manufacturer, whereas Tesla's stations are currently only compatible with Tesla vehicles.
He also discussed the seamless user experience, stating that Tesla's strength lies in its seamless experience for owners due to its control over both the cars and the charging network. However, this may not be the case for other car brands, which can lead to frustrating experiences with third-party charging providers. Overall, OpenGrid Technologies is revolutionizing the electric vehicle charging industry with its innovative approach, making it an attractive option for commercial property managers looking to offer EV charging services to their customers.

  • 162 - How to Raise Children of Character with Patricia McGann

Patricia McGann, author of the recent book "Steadfast Parenting", joins The DMV Business Show with Otto Sevilla to discuss her new book, which is a comprehensive guide for parents to navigate the challenges of raising children from toddler age to teenage years. The book is written after years of experience in education, raising her own family, and being a grandmother, and realizes that many parents are overwhelmed by the demands of work, technology, and societal pressures, leading them to neglect their most vital relationship - with their child.

Throughout the conversation, Patricia emphasizes the need for parents to have guidance and support in their journey of raising children. She notes that many parents lack the resources and feel isolated, leading her to write a weekly newsletter to parents, which eventually turned
into the book. The newsletter, initially printed and later digital, spread beyond the school's families and was shared with others.
Patricia suggests that parents should focus on the process of parenting rather than trying to follow a specific formula or achieve a particular outcome. She highlights the importance of:
*Trusting oneself as a parent: Embracing one's own capabilities and intuition as a parent.
*Adapting to one's child's unique needs: Recognizing and responding to each child's individual needs and personality.
*Enjoying the daily moments with one's child: Cultivating a sense of presence and appreciation for the everyday experiences with one's child.
    * Setting boundaries with technology and work: Establishing a healthy balance between family time and work/study responsibilities.
*Being present and mindful in the moment: Living in the present and being fully engaged with one's child.
Patricia shares a personal anecdote about the importance of being mindful of one's own emotions and reactions, especially in front of children. She emphasizes the need for parents to create a space for themselves to transition from work to family time, and to prioritize self-care to maintain emotional well-being.
The conversation also touches on the differences in the communication styles between boys and girls. Patricia notes that boys often prefer physical activity to connect, while girls use verbal language. She suggests that children may not need a large social circle, but instead prefer close relationships with a few people.
In summary, "Steadfast Parenting" is a comprehensive guide that emphasizes the importance of parents being present, mindful, and trusting in their role. By focusing on the process of parenting and being adaptable, parents can build strong, meaningful relationships with their children. The book offers practical advice and personal anecdotes to help parents navigate the challenges of raising children, and ultimately become the best parent they can be.
