Jim Santelle, host of Amicus: A Law Review, guest hosts on what marks a dark day for our democracy. Indeed, this is a dark day for all those who believe in the right of We the People to self governance. Because on this day, our President demonstrated his alignment not with the will of the People but with the oligarchs and autocracy of Russia. President Zelensky of Ukraine met with our nation’s President and Vice President to negotiate and sign a deal today exchanging Ukraine’s natural resources for our support in Ukraine’s existential struggle against Russia. Instead, our chief executives berated, belittled, and bullied the leader of a sovereign democratic nation. And the groups parted without committing to a deal. A dark day indeed.
Still, we end the day with something good. As difficult as it is to summon up anything good to share, that itself marks the importance of doing so. On dark days like today, we must- MUST- resist the temptation to fall into despair. For celebrating love, light, and human connection is itself a form of resistance to the darkest intentions of authoritarianism.

Guests: Jim SantelleJim Santelle, host of Amicus: A Law Review, guest hosts for the day. On this, a momentous and frankly terrifying day as the world order, which has for centuries now ticked along towards governance by We the People, once more shifts. Today, the 47th President of the United States met in the Oval Office with President Zelensky of Ukraine along with our nation’s Vice President. The exchange began professionally- though not warmly- and ended in disaster. In what may be a moment of reflection in future years as a moment of dramatic shift in the world order, our nation’s highest executive ejected an allied leader from the White House. Watch the full exchange here, events turn fully contentious around the 37 minute mark.

Guests: Jim SantelleThe Morning Show on February 28 featured an update from the Walk With GRACE Board.
Matt Rothschild guest hosts for the day. At the top of the hour, Matt talks with Dave Zirin, sports editor at The Nation. In a contrary opinion to Matt’s guests in the first hour, Dave calls for a deep reckoning within the Democratic party to address the failings that led to our 2024 loss. While he portrays a pessimistic attitude towards democracy, he urges us to resist. Resist the lies, resist the hate, and resist the temptation to curl up and consign our country to the dustheap. Instead, let’s raise aspirations of what the world, and what this country can be. We must stretch our wings and reach out for better for all of us. And it starts with accountability.
Speaking of wings, in the bottom of the hour, we shift from Matt’s passion for politics to his passion for birds. Jeffrey Worrel joins us representing the Raptor Resource Project. Just this week, the Raptor Resource Project caught- and after some research, released- the oldest known golden eagle in North America! Jeff shares a wealth of information with us, as we end our day with an extended “tell us something good” segment. Of course, with Matt, we formally end with a poem. Today, we share “Beside the Golden Door” by Rita Dove.

Guests: Dave Zirin, Jeffrey Worrell, Matt RothschildMatt Rothschild guest hosts for the day. At the top of the hour, Matt talks with Earl Ingram on the death of longtime Milwaukee journalist Joel McNally. Known for his progressive legacy and self-proclaimed “cockeyed optimism,” Matt and Earl remember Joel extremely fondly. He leaves behind work for us all- to carry on a progressive agenda with good humor and kindness. At the bottom of the hour, Joe Zepecki, progressive communications maestro, joins us for a talk on messaging and moving forward. He asks, and it’s an important question, do we want to fight or do we want to win? Well, let’s fight to win for all of us, and only so. Because the people we’re “fighting” are our neighbors.

Guest: Phil NeeMatt Rothschild fills in as guest host for the day. Angela Lang, executive director of BLOC- Black Leaders Organizing for Community- joins as cohost for the hour. We discuss efforts towards countering the hate, the divisiveness, and the absolute nonsense of the second Trump administration. In this hour, we address the world’s richest person, unelected and unqualified, dominating the first Cabinet meeting and AI generated videos about ethnically cleansing Gaza. So what can we do about it? How can we bring some sense to this all as a form of countering the destruction of our democracy? Well, we can protest. As several hundred did yesterday outside Senator Ron Johnson’s Madison office to voice their concerns over Medicaid cuts forecast in the next national budget.
Another powerful way of countering the divisiveness is to find what brings us together. Like the first signs of spring in the calls of a sandhill crane or buds on a tree. Or in poetry. As he often does, Matt chose a powerful poem to share to end the show. Listen to the full session of Clint Smith reading his poetry or choose only the poem we shared here.

At the top of the hour, Heather duBoi Bourenane, executive director of the Wisconsin Public Education Network, joins us. The week caps with a day of action to support public schools, get involved!
At the bottom of the hour, Matt talks with Lisa Lucas, from All In Wisconsin about how to take action to protect democracy. In a time when so many of us feel paralyzed by the intentionally overwhelming noise of federal chaos, we need help moving to action. Here’s a helpful guide on how to get there.
