Black women have been scrutinized over the years for their 'ethnic' looks. Oftentimes this results in changes that make them appear more Eurocentric than necessary. Over the years rap legend Lil Kim has endured extensive plastic surgeries to change her look. A most recent pic shows the most dramatic transformation yet. She has literally changed hues and now resembles a blonde haired white woman. In her own words:

"All my life men have told me I wasn’t pretty enough—even the men I was dating. And I’d be like, ‘Well, why are you with me, then?’” It’s always been men putting me down just like my dad. To this day when someone says I’m cute, I can’t see it. I don’t see it no matter what anybody says.”

Is it the fault of the black community that so many black women want to change their appearance? Is there a lack of affirmation for black women with natural looks, shape and style? Have we forgotten about Sarah Baartman?

This show will discuss the how this impacts the black community and what should be done to instill a deeper sense of 'Black Pride'.

Everyone has heard of the LGBT community, right? But, does everyone know what it stands for? For those of you who don't, here you go: Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender.

For some reason the 'B' in the acronym is always overlooked or downplayed. The bisexual community faces a lot of slack and are called 'confused' or 'greedy' by those who don't fully understand their place on the needle of human sexuality. Recently, Love and HIp Hop star Miles Brock was spotted with Sundy Carter from the Basketball Wives franchise. On the show Miles was in a same-sex relationship with Milan Christopher. Now that he is with Sundy, his claim of being bisexual is attacked and ridiculed. Is this fair? 

This episode will discuss the B and the misconceptions about those who claim to equally desire both genders.

La' Porsha Renae sang her butt off throughout her stint on American Idol. Although she did not win top honor she still snagged a record deal and a legion of supporters from all walks of life. 

Most recent, she was quoted as saying: 

“This is how I feel about the LGBT community: They are people just like us. They’re not animals as someone [Manny Pacquiao] stated before. They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons, whatever the reason is, you still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another.”

Renae went on, however, “I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way. It wasn’t how I was raised.” Still, she added, “But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual and they’re such sweet, nice people. We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on.”

I heard/read some very interesting retorts that made me ponder how I felt about her statement. That being said, I am left to ask, "Is the (black) gay community being overly sensitive about her transparency, or should her views be respected and not hinder the growth of her career?"

It is often argued that being gay is a choice. A desired bulls-eye placed on the backs of those who are ostracized, alienated and ridiculed for their attraction to the same gender. Although many seem strong and secure on the outside, the internal pains are usually masked by risky habits and/or guarded behaviors that negatively influence how they interact within mainstream society. 

This show will give listeners an opportunity to hear the stories of four black gay men who have overcome the odds, found peace within themselves and are giving back to the black community as a whole. It will be an endearing and candid introspective certain to shed light on a lot of the incorrect assumptions made about black gay men.

The work of HIV prevention is full of anecdotes on how to not transmit the virus. Many of which make condom use the primary source of prevention. However, for those who loathe condoms and would rather risk infection than covering their shaft; what do we tell them?

I often make reference to black-on-black crime but have recently been challenged to revise my thought. Although would arguably say that crimes commited against blacks by blacks should be considered black on black, there are some who debate this and profess that those crimes should not be categorized as race-related but more-so environmental circumstances.

No matter where you fall on the spectrum, all of us need to strongly consider and dialogue about how we will do ministry in a world that will no longer define marriage and sexuality by traditional terms.  

The overall objective of this conversation is NOT to force a change in people's opinions or theologies; the main purpose is to begin the much-needed dialogue on the realities of doing ministry with the LGBT community in mind.  Whether you affirm or deny homosexuality theologically, we can all agree all people are worthy of experiencing God's love; and we must admit that the church has traditionally been a very hostile and hypocritical place for LGBT individuals. How do we do ministry today in a way that upholds our biblical convictions (as diverse as they may be), and still demonstrate love to a community (as diverse as it may be)?

Pastor Radcliff holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Studies (with highest honors) from the Long Beach Bible College, and a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary (with an emphasis in Multi-Cultural Ministry/African-American Church Studies). He is currently pursuing his PhD.
