The Conference Finals have not gone the way almost anyone would have been able to expect. The Denver Nuggets have been a great team all season, but a 3-0 lead is definitely unexpected especially given AD's 29/14 averages through these first 3 games. The Nuggets have played incredibly as a team, and Jamal Murray is showing the league the ceiling he can hit in the playoffs. In the East, the Heat have surprised the world by taking a 3-0 lead over Boston, who look demoralized and without an answer for the Heat role players. Jimmy Butler had an excellent game 1, but the play of their undrafted players has been incredible, and they have beaten the Celtics handily as a team. The future of the Celtics seems a bit less certain, as the Jays will be set to be paid a combined $600 million in their next supermax contracts. The Heat and Nuggets will be a very entertaining NBA Finals despite the conversation that's been had about poor ratings. The draft order for this year's NBA Draft was announced last night, and the San Antonio Spurs were the lucky team this year to receive the #1 pick and the rights to draft Victor Wembanyama. The Pistons were the biggest loser of this draft process, sinking all the way to the 5th pick despite their record in the regular season. The Blazers are interested in moving their #3 pick in order to get older talent that can compete around Dame, so we will be watching to see which teams are most interested. The Western Conference kicked off last night with an excellent big man battle that ultimately ended with the Denver Nuggets winning 132 - 126. This series will be incredible to watch from start to finish, and it will be really interesting to see how the Nuggets respond to the adjustment made to get AD off of Jokic. The Celtics have pulled off the 3-2 series comeback with a dominant game 7 victory behind Jayson Tatum's 51/13/5 with 0 turnovers, setting an NBA record for points in a game 7. The Celtics have not always looked their best in these playoffs, but this game 7 showed everyone why Jayson Tatum is a superstar and what makes him truly different. The Sixers had some historic choke Jobs from MVP Joel Embiid, who went 5-18, and former MVP James Harden, who scored 0 pts in the 4th quarter and ended the game with 9 points. PJ Tucker scored more points in the first quarter than James Harden did all game... The Process does not look good in Philly, but the Celtics should now have an easy path to the finals. This Conference Semifinals has not gone the way that many fans in Boston, including myself, thought it would go. James Harden has put on 3 masterclass performances over 5 games, and Embiid is slowly but surely getting closer to 100%. The Celtics were able to overcome a 3-2 lead in last year's playoffs but it seems far less likely this time around. The Nuggets take a 3-2 lead over the Suns, with Jokic so far averaging 35/14/10 over the series. Phoenix has a lot of guaranteed money on the books for next season, and it will be interesting to see how they are able to add depth in the offseason if they lose this series. The Lakers are up comfortably against the Warriors in what may be one of the last series from this Warriors core. Joel Embiid has officially become the 2023 NBA MVP, winning 76% of the first place votes and having an absolutely historic season. Jokic and Giannis has fantastic seasons as well, but their statistical production doesn't touch that of Embiid. Embiid hasn't shown the same fire in the playoffs, largely due to the sprained LCL ligament in his knee. The Celtics dropped game 1 to an incredible James Harden performance, but showed the dominance that people expected in Game 2. The Secound Round of playoffs is probably the most entertaining series I've seen since I started watching the NBA, and each series has so much to dissect. We are almost through with the first round of the NBA Playoffs, and they have been much more excited than a lot of us expected. The Milwaukee Bucks lost in 5 to the Miami Heat, in a series that absolutely nobody expected to go the way that it did. Jimmy Butler's playoff legacy continues to be written, and the Bucks are in a very interesting spot moving forward. Despite some Trae Young heroics, the Celtics managed to beat the Hawks in 6 last night, putting them up against Philly in the Conference Semis. Over in the west, Nuggets vs Suns and Warriors vs Lakers seem like the most entertaining second round matchups we could have possibly gotten. Whichever teams are able to move forward into the conference finals will boost the legacy of their stars in a major way. The playoffs are here, and they have been excellent so far! As a Celtics homer, watching them beat down Atlanta was beautiful, but as an NBA fan, we have really been spoiled with entertaining first-round match ups. Clippers vs Suns seems much more exciting than previously thought, and the Warriors vs Kings series has had some incredible offensive moments already.
