Mr Bauer will discuss his career, the Family Medicine Education Consortium, Inc and its upoming meeting in Hershey, PA., and innovation in family medicine and training of family physicians. What causes hundreds of medical students to attend the FMEC meeting year after year. What causes residents and faculty to continue to value the FMEC in numerous ways. During this time of massive change in health care, Mr Bauer has a vision of what is and what might be. Discussion will include comments about the historical voices in Family Medicine such as Tom Leaman, MD and Nick Zirvanos, MD that Mr Bauer has used to remain continuously aware. Larry has influenced the careers of thousands of physicians and faculty, which we'll also discuss.

Interview with Lori Heim, MD President of the American Academy of Family Physicians. Dr Heim will review highlights of the last year as President and comment on personal challenges and Academy successes. Her valuable perspectives on health care reform will be shared. Her personal career in the US Air force and North Carolina will be reviewed. She will comment on the future for students, residents, faculty, and practicing physicians in family medicine. She will comment on official AAFP positions as needed and reflect on the pressure of leading a diverse group in an era of confusing change. Her expectations of the next five years will be reviewed through her personal crystal ball. We'll share perspectives on many family medicine issues and have fun. Our discussion will include aspects of patient-physician relationships and socio-technical innovation that helps them in clinical and human decisions.

The focus for this episode is Protection of patients and family physicians in the context of their important relationship. Protection to do their work, to have their life and to make reasonable decisions regarding health and well-being may depend on internal and external forces, such as personal values and societal rules. He will take calls from patients and doctors to ask or comment on how to protect patients now and during the massive change coming in health care. Dr Synonymous will introduce the importance of neighborliness as an important element of protection. What would we do for and expect of our neighbors if they are the patient or the family doctor? Interview with Sarah Sams, MD, FAAFP, new President of the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians about her life and family medicine career and the challenges facing her as a leader. We will discuss her unique experience with her Guardian Angel and her commitment to the woman who became her angel. Her story includes migration from Iowa to Columbus, Ohio to job to medical school. She will mention the challenges facing Family Medicine in Ohio and the challenges facing physicians in training and their faculty. Dr Sams is Associate Director of the Grant Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program in Columbus. She is renowned for her love of her patients and passionately advocates for them and her specialty. She quilts in her spare time when not playing softball. She shares a message of commitment, leadership and hope to patients and family physicians. We will mention her model of LOVE to lead the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians in these times of great health care change. We will discuss her use of social media including a need for increased patient roles.
