On today’s episode Joe Slawek shares the difference between and entrepreneur and a CEO, as well as how each role is responsible for different business goals. Listen in as Deborah and Joe discuss how your relationship with risk changes as a business grows, how trust radiates into workplace culture, and how to make the transition from corporate to entrepreneurial roles.
After years in the flavor industry, Joe Slawek saw the need for a different kind of flavor company that had both great technology and great service. We call it “high tech, high touch.”
Joe wanted to build an organization that could compete with the largest flavor companies across a range of market segments, but also connect with customers as only small companies can, developing relationships, sharing visions, methods and time. He founded FONA in 1987 on these principles.
It’s this commitment to customers that makes FONA a special organization and led to FONA’s numerous awards and recognition (including Forbes Small Giants, Great Place to Work, Inc. Best Workplaces and Fortune magazine). Joe has been personally honored with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of The Year award for Manufacturing in the Midwest.

Dr. David Phelps, DDS shares how a family illness changed his perspective on time, success, and fueled his desire for creating freedom for himself and others. Listen in as Deborah and David discuss feeling torn between work and family, the importance of mentoring others, and how collaboration with others creates freedom and peace of mind.
Dr. David Phelps, DDS owned and managed a private practice dental office for over twenty-one years. While still in dental school, he began his investment in real estate by joint-venturing with his father on their first rental property in 1980. Three years later, they sold the property and David took his $25,000 capital gain share and leveraged it into thirty-one properties that later produced $15,000 monthly net cash flow.
Life was good, the sky was the limit - until the dark day that David’s daughter, Jenna, was diagnosed with Leukemia. In the midst of cancer treatments, epilepsy and ultimately a liver transplant for Jenna, David made the crucial decision to leave clinical practice so that he could spend every moment with his daughter.
David’s “Plan B” (a portfolio of cash-fow producing real estate assets) gave him the Freedom to focus 100% on what mattered most. Jenna won the battle with disease, and David still enjoys the Freedom to cherish every moment with her that he can. Today, David is a nationally recognized speaker on creating Freedom, building real businesses and investing in real estate.
David helps other logical, rational professionals become dreamers, then strategically manifest those dreams into Freedom. Under David’s leadership, the Freedom Founders Mastermind Community grows exponentially, year by year, providing the pathway to Freedom for many professional practice owners.
