  • QUACKCAST 482 - 2n Guess

Tantz's newspost on Saturday about the problems of second guessing yourself and the issues that can arise from that was the inspiration for this week's newspost. Second guessing yourself can have GOOD possibilities and negative ones. The good: it forces you to hone your creative work and improve it, you don't just put things out there, you evaluate them and improve them! The bad: you can get stuck in a loop where you keep on thinking your stuff is not good enough, you might get hung up on one little thing and never move past it. The thing is that you have to learn to know when to stop and just move on! If something really doesn't work then scrap that portion of it and start again. It's not worth it to stay stuck on one little thing forever. Believe me, I speak from experience! I second guess everything. The takeaway is that it helps your work if you stop and evaluate it critically, but it hurts your work and can cause a block if you get too obsessed by perfectionism or worry that something isn't good enough. What were you worst blocks caused by? The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to O Sarilho: Fly past the technospires, neon-lit suks, Persian carpets made out of electrical wires, and street markets full of old robot parts. This tune takes 1000 and 1 Arabian nights into a dark cyberpunk future that no one could foresee… Topics and shownotes Links Tantz's post about Second Guesses - https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/news/2020/jun/05/second-guessing-yourself/ Sarah N's comic Daniel - http://www.vermillionworks.com/daniel/enter Featured comic: Moxie the Magical Maid - https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/news/2020/jun/03/featured-comic-moxie-the-magical-maid/ Featured music: O Sarilho - https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/O_Sarilho/, by Shizamura, rated T. • QUACKCAST 481 - Fun with history?

Today we're chatting about using historical stuff in your story and knowing how to use it right! Sometimes it's good to change stuff and sometimes it's not. The thing is that you should ONLY change it if you know what you're doing and why you're doing it. A good example is A Knight's Tale- It has a historical setting and there are a lot of deliberate historical anachronisms in it, and they're all very obvious, they do not pretend to be anything but what they are.

A Bad example is the Vikings TV series which has a historical setting and claims to be about real people and to actually represent those real people in history but the characters have modern hipster hairstyles, silly death-metal eye makeup, hipster tattoos, and fantasy biker outfits. A far, far better representation of viking people can be found in the 2019 movie “Huntress: Rune of the Dead”.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Warcraft Lightreaver - Grey forbidding walls of solid granite rise high into the dark skies, sounds of heavy doom echo from the far winds, booming with thunder of an inevitable, inescapable despair of a world bathed in shadow and war.

  • QUACKCAST 480 - In Style!

Styles are a very individual thing. Emma Clare did a great newspost on them last week featuring a pic of Sailor Moon that she drew in her own style. The cover image here features my own version. Pit, Tantz, Banes and I had a good long chat about all the different aspects of style and how you develop them.

For myself, I sort of just fell into my style, it wasn't something I planned. It's just a sort of stylised realism, mostly made up of all the errors, mistakes and incorrect assumptions of how reality and the human body looks and it just comes out as my “style”.

How did you come up with your style and have you had a go at the Sailor Moon challenge?

The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to the Mystic From Wanzerbe - Long, dry, dusty roads, desert adventure, hot winds, mirages and magic shimmering in the heat haze of the hot red sun above. This music is full of the fire and hot spice of far north Africa. It sounds like a techno Tinariwen!

  • QUACKCAST 479 - Big ideas in fiction

My original idea for this Quackcast was: “Genre fiction is the best place to explore ideas, straight fiction doesn't do it as well”
What I meant was that diverting from straight reality in fiction makes it easier to conceptualise, simplify and explain complicated ideas to a general audience for a whole number of reasons. There was some disagreement between Tantz and I because I expressed myself poorly so she'd thought that I was saying it was much easier to write SciFi and fantasy (Genre fiction), and it was easier to write about big ideas, while straight fiction wasn't good for that- Which is fair enough! My initial statement is so badly worded that's a valid interpretation!
Fortunately Banes and Pit were on hand to smooth things out and explain things properly. Pit mediated between us and Banes conceptualised my concept FAR, far better than I did! Unfortunately you don't get much of that disagreement on the Quackcast. You DO get a bit of it on the PATREON only video however ^_^

To get back to things though: Diverting from straight reality in fiction, whether that's into a full on genre style or just adding unrealistic elements, allows you to symbolically handle big ideas like death, mortality, racism, slavery, predestination, religion etc in a way where you can be very specific about what you want to say about those ideas, more so than in straight fiction because you have more control over the world you're presenting. That's not to say that all “genre” fiction tackles big ideas or is always good at doing it when it does, or that straight fiction doesn't tackle big ideas or does it badly when it tries to. “Genre” fiction also has the advantage of being able to separate its ideas from current realities of politics and culture which might get in the way of people being receptive to the ideas that it presents.

A Handmaid's Tale (Margaret Atwood), is a good example of this: The big idea presented in the book is that women's place in society, their rights and humanity, can so easily be wiped out overnight, the experience is dehumanising and horrible, and it can happen anywhere at any time. It uses a Scifi setting to do this, which makes the scenario seem very possible but also accessible to a mass audience. There have been numerous realistic and true stories written about the experience of women when Shah of Iran was overthrown in 1979, or when the Taliban took over in Afghanistan in the 90s, and yet none have had the reach or the general acceptance of A Handmaid's Tale.
The closest would be Persepolis (Marjane Satrapi), but in it's case it still employs diversions from reality in its style, and since it's specifically about Iran people are far less likely to apply those ideas more generally.

Early Star Trek and Twilight Zone episodes were goldmines for “Big Ideas”! What're some of your fave “genre” fiction that tackles big idea better than other kinds of fiction?

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Fated Feather: Come aboard me hearties! Cast off and sail away into the balmy tropical sunshine, as warm waters lap the hull, the bow wave glitters in the sunshine, the rigging creaks in the warm breeze, and seafoam floats by in our wake. Today is the time for adventure on the green seas.

  • QUACKCAST 478 - Pity da fool!

Fools are an iconic character trope and I wanted to explore them. They're a lot more varied and interesting than is readily apparent. There's a LOT more too a fool than what something like TV tropes suggests, unless you get into the subtypes… And that's what we explored in this free-form discussion. I introduced the idea in the Patreon only video where Tantz, Banes, Pt and I try and get a handle on the idea for the first time, so that's a good behind the scenes insight into what goes on!

We worked out that there are many different kinds of fools. The classic idea of The Fool comes from King Leer where the fool speaks truth to power, like the little boy who tells the emperor that he's naked, or a lucky, untouchable character that succeeds regardless and gets automatic protection from those around them, reminiscent of the time when mentally disabled people were seen as being “touched by god”.
They can be sidekicks like Barney on the Flintstones, or main characters like The Tick, or Maxwell Smart. They can be lovable rouges like Flashman or the famous Scaramouch character, they can be innocents like Andy from Parks and Rec, or they can have an altogether different purpose like Jerry in Parks and Rec: he's a sort of a court Jester style fool but his role is to show the darker sides of the otherwise good characters as they make fun of him.

Who is your favourite fool? And do you make use of a fool in your work?

The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to Cragwater: Magical, bucolic fairy music. Lush green idyllic meadows on high mountains overlooking sunlit valleys, washed in golden brilliance, walled by faint purple mountains that fade into the distant hazy sky. A brook glitters at the centre as it bubbles and flows between the rocks and grass. This music evokes high places, greenery, and sunlight.

  • QUACKCAST 477 - Darkest before dawn

Today on this glorious date we chat about that part in stories where everything turns to crap for the protagonists, just before the run up to the climax where they find their inner strength again and regain their powers so that the climax is even more effective than it would normally be… just BEFORE that moment.
Everything is finally going well for our characters, their relationship is amazing, they have all the money they need to keep the clubhouse open, they're going to win the big game, they have the magic sword to kill the dragon with, they have the fastest car in the race, the bombs are all set to destroy the alien mother-ship, and the band is finally going to make it to the big time!

    But.
Suddenly it ALL falls apart in the most tragic and disastrous fashion. They have an argument that breaks them up and the wedding is off for good, they have to give all their money to their sick grandfather who needs a kidney transplant so the clubhouse will close afteral, their best batter injures himself during practice and can't play so it looks like they'll lose the big game now, the magic sword is stolen by evil gnomes and now they have nothing to kill the dragon with, their car engine blows up and will take a week to fix but the big race is tomorrow, the fuses on the bombs on the alien mother-ship can only be set in person so one of the crew will have to sacrifice themselves, it turns out that the promoters only want the lead singer so the band breaks up right on the eve of their greatest success…
    Yeah, THAT moment. ;)

You have to handle it right so it's not just forgettable or too much of a gut-punch to the audience, but the purpose of these moments is to juice the audience so that the climax has even more impact: You dig a ditch in front of that hill to make it look way bigger! Your protagonists win in SPITE of those difficulties, which is supposed to make that climax way more satisfying.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Click Track Lolita - Click, flick, tick, tick… slow groove, deliberate and plotted. This track steals upon you and takes over utterly, like a hidden cloud of contagion, before you realize it you’re deep in the midst of the sound.
