  • QUACKCAST 477 - Darkest before dawn

Today on this glorious date we chat about that part in stories where everything turns to crap for the protagonists, just before the run up to the climax where they find their inner strength again and regain their powers so that the climax is even more effective than it would normally be… just BEFORE that moment. Everything is finally going well for our characters, their relationship is amazing, they have all the money they need to keep the clubhouse open, they're going to win the big game, they have the magic sword to kill the dragon with, they have the fastest car in the race, the bombs are all set to destroy the alien mother-ship, and the band is finally going to make it to the big time! But. Suddenly it ALL falls apart in the most tragic and disastrous fashion. They have an argument that breaks them up and the wedding is off for good, they have to give all their money to their sick grandfather who needs a kidney transplant so the clubhouse will close afteral, their best batter injures himself during practice and can't play so it looks like they'll lose the big game now, the magic sword is stolen by evil gnomes and now they have nothing to kill the dragon with, their car engine blows up and will take a week to fix but the big race is tomorrow, the fuses on the bombs on the alien mother-ship can only be set in person so one of the crew will have to sacrifice themselves, it turns out that the promoters only want the lead singer so the band breaks up right on the eve of their greatest success… Yeah, THAT moment. ;) You have to handle it right so it's not just forgettable or too much of a gut-punch to the audience, but the purpose of these moments is to juice the audience so that the climax has even more impact: You dig a ditch in front of that hill to make it look way bigger! Your protagonists win in SPITE of those difficulties, which is supposed to make that climax way more satisfying. This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Click Track Lolita - Click, flick, tick, tick… slow groove, deliberate and plotted. This track steals upon you and takes over utterly, like a hidden cloud of contagion, before you realize it you’re deep in the midst of the sound. Topics and shownotes VIDEO exclusive! • QUACKCAST 476 - Tell me about your childhood

How does where you grew up influence your comicing?
This idea interested me, so I posted about it on the DD forums and asked other people. I didn't really know about it myself: how did my childhood environment influence my later comicing? The conclusion I came to was that since my childhood experience was so alien to the worlds depicted in the media I enjoyed so much most of my comicing and creation was based on imagination out of necessity: Historical fantasy set in mountainous, cold, hazy Europe, vs my own experience of a new country without much history, with sunny weather, clear skies and a beachy lifestyle in Australia.

A lot of the respondents to my thread (and Pitface in the Quackcast) seemed to have a similar view: their writing was quite different from the world they grew up in. Escapism is quite popular apparently! “Writing what you know” isn't always that fun or interesting. That said, a lot of people do write what they know and do it very, very well! That was also a popular result on the thread.

So what was the world like when you were a kid?

The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to Crucial Corona Chronicles - Rhythmic pulsing, blood pumping through veins, platelets and white blood cells surging through vessels… nasty, globular corona cells and invading and populating, multiplying, spreading, echoing the sickness of society as they populate and change every corner…

  • QUACKCAST 475 - Tropeagedden!

Certain tropes or stylistic ways of telling a story can get really, really popular and trendy very quickly and it seems like they're everywhere! Suddenly many story are all told with the same sort of stylistic flourishes. The first few times it's done that way it's clever and meaningful but after that people just use the same thing without understanding it properly and consequently usually do a really crappy job!

My biggest bugbear currently is the stories that are split across multiple timelines: So we show concurrent storylines but one or a few of them are actually set in the past and they're interspersed with a storyline from the present as if all events are happening at the SAME time. The Witcher handled that very badly because it had no context clues about where you were at the “time”. The Medici series is another example. In that they DO give you context clues however because the characters actually look different but it's still annoying because they switch back and fourth far too regularly.

When this style of fast temporal storyline switching was first introduced in novels (in the 80s) it was reasonably clever and interesting because it was new at the time. But it is something that has to be handled carefully in order to work well. It doesn't lend itself to overuse! Unless there's a good reason and you REALLY know what you're doing, either tell your story in a linear fashion or give us extended scenes that take a full chapter/episode to cpmplete

Banes made a post about love triangles. That's another trope that can be terrible if overused but great if used with a bit of tact and skill. Other examples are subverted character types (evil angels/good demons), subverted humanised villains (good Maleficent), bad heroes (rapist knight in shining armour)- these things are ONLY interesting because they're a twist on a standard trope and a variation from the norm, but when they BECOME the norm there's no reason for them to exist: they self invalidate.
    What are some you've noticed?

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Space Daddy Adventures - A big dose of early 70s prog concept mixed with 1960s beat poetry. It reminds me of the music of the British prog band Jade Warrior from their eponymous 1971 album. Breathy flute, percussion, and a spare, jungle sound with creepy British vocals… Slip into your tight black polo-neck and black beret, sip on an espresso and flick your fingers in appreciation of this coooool retro piece!

  • QUACKCAST 473 - Genre vs Setting

In this Quackcast we talk about the differences between genre and setting and what genre really is. For instance: Fantasy and SciFi aren't genres, they're settings… Mostly. It's complicated but they both pretty much USED to be genres, now they're mainly just settings for genre stories to take place in. What does that mean?
Well, Fantasy wasn't even considered a genre back in the day, not really till after the success of Tolkien. Later on a lot of writers began using that same style and consumers really wanted it, so it became a “genre”. It was only later on when it graduated out of that to become a setting that has genre stories set within it.

Scifi was much the same. We backdate the “genre” to Mary Shelly, Jules Verne, HG Wells etc, but that's actually a little silly. SciFi was invented back in the 1920s by publisher Hugo Gernsback as a niche marketing term for his pulp magazines. He bundled together a whole bunch of futuristic stories and works of speculative fiction to sell under that name and created a market for it. That created the genre that people started to write within and to. Now however SciFi is really just a setting that has genre stories within it: detective fiction, nior, action, romance, Western, apocalypse, etc.

This happens when the genre becomes so diverse and ubiquitous that the commonality between stories within it becomes less important than the differences- i.e. the fact that a story is a romance is more significant than the fact it's set in the future, we really don't care too much about the future setting. While in the past it's that future setting which would have been the main selling point.

Think of it in terms of anime, if you have a good familiarity with it. Years ago people thought of anime as a monolithic “genre”, with all the cartoons roughly sharing a lot of themes and styles. This was mainly because only a small amount of it got exported to the west. Now however a massive amount is available and it's very easy to see how different it is. Now “Anime” really only indicates where the cartoon came from, not what kind of product you're going to get.

This week Gunwallace has given us the theme to Just wanna do porn webcomics - A dark room, the air is warm and close. Sweat, passion, heat… the only sound is heavy breathing… as the webcomicer furiously draws the latest issue of their racy webcomic! A lot of moans, vocal distortion and sexy synth music in this one.

  • QUACKCAST 472 - CoVid-19-cast

In this strange time of global pandemic it'd be crazy NOT to acknowledge what we're all experiencing together, so that's what we're talking about today: How the virus stuff is affecting us. Pitface joins us once again so today the quartet is complete: Pitz, Banes, Oz, and Tantz!

This global pandemic is affecting all of the world, all humanity at the same time, wherever we are. It's a really unique experience for us all. We're lucky we had the internet when this struck us! Imagine if we got a pandemic on this scale 40 years ago? At this time in history we can communicate all around the world instantly, video chat, share photos, creations and artwork and we can also find out how each other is doing wherever we are at any given moment. As well as have enough webcomics and movies to entertain us while we're isolated at home…

It's certainly quieter in the streets in my part of the world. I'm on paid leave and might not have a job at the end of it because my office has shut down, but I'm getting to work on my comics a bit more…

    https://www.theduckwebcomics.com/Pinky_TA/

DD is an amazing little global community! We hope everyone is safe, has enough toilet paper and will have a job at the end of this outbreak. Watch out for the economic chaos afterwards though.

How is CoVid-19 affecting you and your family?

The musical feature this week that Gunwallace has given us is theme to The Feelings of a High School Girl - Initially awkward, after a few faltering steps it finds its rhythm and gets into a lovely groove, starting with a bit of an acoustic blues line then thrumming away into an electronic confection of joy and fun!
