  • EC #32: The Failure Olympics

The Barkley Marathons is regarded as one of the toughest endurance races on the planet. Why do I call it The Failure Olympics, and why does it offer a counterintuituve escape from failure? Assuming you even get a place in this race, you are almost certainly guaranteed to not finish. However, the gift inherent in just participating is far more precious than the disappointment of the loss could ever be.

    Stupid Idea of The Week

...comes from a veteran supermodel with a reaaaaaaallllllyyyy tough choice that every woman must make at some point in their lives... (yes, really).

    Main Section

The Barkley Marathons is not only tough, but reaches levels of eccentricity previously attained only by English aristocrats such as Screaming Lord Such. 5 marathons in 60 hours. The entry fee is less than a cup of coffee, but you must bring a personalised present for the organiser. The trails are not marked and the combined altitude of all 5 marathons equals that of Everest. Only 15 people in 30 years have ever actually finished it. So why do it? And what has this insane event got to teach is about recovering from binge eating and food compulsion? So much - that’s what. Even if - especially if - you’d rather cut your arm off than run a marathon, this episode is for you.

  • EC #31: Books To Help End Compulsive Eating

Three book recommendations to help you move through your binge eating. These are all very different, so I hope that you will find at least one of them worth buying.

    *Stupid Idea of The Week*

One word that I believe has been chronically mis-used in the world of self-help, and especially spirituality, a word that is seemingly beautiful and inspirational...but is the vocabulary of warfare. When I used to try to buy into it, I not only failed, but feel incredibly inadequate because of how uncomfortable it made me feel. Find out what it is and why it, not we, is the failure.

    *Main section*

I read extracts from 3 books I think you will find useful to help deal with your eating issues.

'Mindless Eating' by Brian Wansink How environment can hinder - or help - your eating choices. I read from a chapter entitled ‘Mindless Eating Scripts’.

‘The Ultramind Solution’ by Dr Mark Hyman How many problems like depression and anxiety are created by what we put into our body. Controversial and liberating. You don’t need to buy into what he is saying - just try his ideas out.

‘A Course In Weight Loss’ by Marianne Williamson Beautifully describes the experiences of compulsive and binge eating in a rare and lyrical way.

  • EC30: Golden Globes and Stupid Questions

Today I take a short excerpt from The australian drama The Code and using it to help you turn your eating problems into the doorway for change. Sounds impossible? It isn't! Plus my take on The 2018 Golden Globes.

    Great Speech of The Week

Replacing Stupid Idea of The Week is a short section on Seth Myers’ opening speech at The Golden Globes 2018. I answer the quesion: Is it acceptable to make jokes about Me Too, Harvey Weinstein and sexual harrassment?

Main Section - A Stupid Question That Can Turn Your Compulsive Eating On Its Head Can we accept that problem we didn’t choose and maybe even turn it to our advantage, to use it as fuel for change in our lives outside of our eating problems?

    Discover:

*Why the confusion and ideological conflict in the health and nutrition industries can actually be a blessing in disguise

*How you can develop your own powerful BS radar when it comes to so-called gurus

*What Cavebrain is, and how to work with - instead of be controlled by - it

    *What the wounded healer is

*How we can help our kids and young people around us

  • EC 29: Better Than Willpower

Why Willpower is the starter motor - not the whole vehicle - of real, lasting change...and what to replace it with.

You know how exercise is a better alternative to sitting on the couch and dreaming about being fit? How applying for the job you want is a better alternative to investing in a boiler room scam? I have a similar no-brainer alternative to willpower for you today. This is both a hugely limited and massively overrated tool for change. Learn why this is, and what to replace it with. Oh go on then,  I’ll let you keep the W word if you like!

    *Stupid Idea of The Week*

Or should I say Stupid quotes of the week. About...guess what?

    *Main section*

Willpower is most people’s worst enemy dressed up as their greatest friend. This love affair is based on the assumption that the only thing the bulldozer of your will needs to flatten is laziness or apathy – roadblocks that do not deserve any kind of analysis. Another myth is that your conscious mind is entirely capable of controlling your body and your instincts.

    In this episode, discover:

    • How you have been unwittingly training your brain to sabotage your will
    • The valid place that willpower has in achieving change
    • A reframe of willpower within the context of compulsive eating

  • EC 28: A New Year's Resolution For Food Rebels
Use the positive energy of your inner rebel to failure-proof yourself against the 15th January (i.e. the day that 90% of people have abandoned their goal).   *Stupid Idea of The Week*

Today a interview with a 9-year-old (my son, to be precise) about a new app he has discovered. Watch out Insanity and PX-90000000 (or whatever those kill-yourself-not-so-softly workout programmes are called)...or in fact don't watch out at all. Everyone else: Listen and weep.

*Main section: The Food Rebel's New Year's Resolution*

The answer to the mass failure of New Year's Resolutions (NYRs) is not necessarily to avoid them. I am just as magnetised by the clean slate appeal of the 1st January as everyone else. We need to reframe the whole challenge and turn our self-sabotage on its head.

    Discover:

    *What a food rebel is

*The positive side to rebellion, featuring Einstein, a load of students and The Arab Spring. The mental dictator in your head that you yourself install on 1st January.

*Why the whole concept of a NYR is so problematic for compulsive and binge eaters

*Why you need to change the type of visionary thinking you use to help achieve your NYR

*How to actually work on a NYR in a way that will neutralise your food rebellion

*The bigger picture: how to make that rebel energy work for you in reclaiming your life from food.
