Los Rojos is a violent criminal organization based primarily in the Mexican states of Guerrero and Morelos. Originally a splinter group from the Beltrán Leyva Organization (BLO) following the death of its leader, Arturo Beltrán Leyva, in 2009, Los Rojos became an independent cartel under the leadership of Santiago Mazari Hernández, known as "El Carrete." The cartel is heavily involved in drug trafficking, particularly heroin, as well as extortion, kidnapping, and other criminal activities.


Los Rojos is known for its brutal tactics and has been engaged in a fierce rivalry with Guerreros Unidos, another cartel that also emerged from the fragmentation of the BLO. This environment is marked by a high level of violence, intimidation, and impunity, making it hazardous for those who report on crime, corruption, and human rights issues.Key Factors Contributing to Danger:

1. Organized Crime and Drug Cartels: The drug cartels exert significant control over various regions in Mexico, often clashing violently with one another and with government forces. Journalists who report on cartel activities, drug trafficking, or cartel violence frequently become targets. The cartels use intimidation tactics such as threats, kidnappings, and assassinations to silence those who attempt to expose their operations.
2. Government Corruption and Collusion: Corruption is deeply entrenched in many levels of the Mexican government, from local police forces to high-ranking officials. Richard Allen and his legal team had another trip to court on Friday and like usual, we are only getting a litlte bit of information, as the transparency levels have dropped to about zero.    The hearing was held for roughly 45 minutes, before coming to an abrupt end.    According to reports, Brad Rozzi, the attorney for Richard Allen, was seen in the hallway speaking with Richard Allen's wife who appeared to be crying.    The trial is still scheduled for October.

The latest updates on Kouri Richins, who is accused of fatally poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, reveal that her preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 26-28, 2024. During this hearing, Judge Richard Mrazik will decide if there is sufficient evidence for Kouri Richins to stand trial for murder and other related charges. She is facing multiple felonies, including aggravated murder, attempted criminal homicide, and drug distribution, among others.

Recent court proceedings involved a motion to disqualify the Summit County prosecutors, which was dismissed by Judge Mrazik. The defense had argued that the prosecution team had violated attorney-client privilege by allegedly listening to jail calls between Richins and her former lawyer. However, the judge found no credible evidence to support this claim and allowed the prosecutors to remain on the case

Richins has been held without bail since her arrest in May 2023 and continues to maintain her innocence. The prosecution alleges she poisoned her husband with a fentanyl-laced drink and had a financial motive for the alleged crime.

In the case of Doe 1 v. JP Morgan Chase & Co. (1:22-cv-10019), Judge Jed S. Rakoff issued an opinion and order on a motion to unseal judicial records filed by The New York Times. The motion sought to unseal certain exhibits that were submitted with summary judgment motions and class certification motions.

Judge Rakoff's ruling granted the motion in part and denied it in part. Specifically, the judge denied the motion to unseal the exhibits submitted with the summary judgment motions, but he granted the motion to unseal the exhibits submitted with the motion for class certification. However, this was conditioned on redactions to protect the anonymity of Jane Doe and other victims involved in the case. Judge Rakoff directed class counsel to submit proposed redactions for the court's review within two weeks of the order​.
