The Exegete

Isaiah 44:24-28

This series of studies begins in Isaiah 44:28 and continues through the end of chapter 45. The emphasis here is on God's greatness as creator, sovereign king, omniscient Lord, and loving savior. We begin to see God's plan to raise up Cyrus (calling Cyrus by name long before he was born!) and the nation of Medo-Persia to deliver His people from the pending captivity under Babylon.

Isaiah 40: 29-31

Isaiah concludes this phenomenal chapter forty with yet two more "He" declarations about the Lord's gracious support of His people. We look at those two statements of support from God and also how these can be accomplished in our lives. We also consider the matter of "waiting for the LORD," a very important, and sometimes difficult, factor in the Christian life. The benefits of waiting for the LORD, however, are valuable and significant.

Isaiah 40:28

This verse may be the culmination of this chapter which proclaims God' greatness. God has unfailing omnipotent power to restore His people, in any era. Isaiah gives five attributes or qualities of God to prove his point: He is everlasting, He is the great self-sustaining I AM, He is the creator, He never becomes tired, and HIs understanding is inscrutable. We also look at some of the crucially important purposes behind God's works.

Isaiah 42:27

Isaiah notes two very misguided and foolish responses that humans make to God's moral demands: "My way is hidden from the Lord," and, "The justice due me escapes the notice of my God." We look at the method of inductive argument called "Inference to the Best Explanation" to prove God's foreknowledge and omniscience as well as six religious or philosophic attempts to deny a judgment day.

Isaiah 40:21-26

Isaiah initially asks four more rhetorical questions at the beginning of this passage. The answers lead us directly to God. We look at how it is that God communicates His presence to us, beyond the direct revelation of Scripture. Isaiah tells us of the majestic sovereignty of our incomparable God over His creation and those who inhabit the earth. We also look at a few examples of how we can empirically know that there is an almighty intelligent creator.

Isaiah 40:15-20

Isaiah uses five similes to compare man to God in this contrast between the finite and infinite. He includes one more "who" question and reveals the Lord as truly transcendent over His creation, yet we note that He loves us enough to die for us! We look at the ontological proof of God's existence and the matter of humans creating idols.

Isaiah 40:12-14

Isaiah begins a pattern of asking six rhetorical questions each one including the query "who?" These include questions about the massiveness of creation as well as who counseled God or informed Him of what to do or taught Him knowledge. The resounding answer is, of course, no one can possibly be in such a position with sovereign, perfect infinite, eternal God!

Isaiah 40:10-11

We continue looking at three prophetic "snapshots" of Messiah Jesus as Savior, King, and Shepherd. He will come with might and with a ruling arm; bringing both reward and recompense. He will tend His flock, carry His lambs, and gently lead the "nursing ewes."

Isaiah 40:6-9

Isaiah speaks to the matter of the temporality of human life. He contrasts that to the greatness and permanence and reliability of God's word. We look at types of human death in the Bible (physical, spiritual, and eternal) and also what the Scripture itself says about its immutability. This includes a look at the nature of truth.

Isaiah 40:4-7

In this passage we see prophetic aspects of Christ's second coming. Phrases in verse four and five are parallel to New Testament passages about the Lord's return. Also, God tells Isaiah, "Call out." Isaiah faithfully speaks what the Lord tells him, which is why God continues to speak to Isaiah! In verses six and seven we begin to see the comparison, which continues throughout the chapter, between finite and temporary mankind and the infinite eternal God and His word.
