Colossians 3:8-10

Paul exhorts believers to put aside five more sin categories in verse eight. These five are linked together and have much to do with attitude and the tongue. They are extremely damaging to other people. He also addresses the problem of lying between believers. Paul again exhorts Christians in the matter of laying aside the old self, which no longer need have dominion, and putting on the new self, which will effectively keep the old self from having dominion.

Paul specifically names five sins in verse five, of which at least four address the matter of sexual sin. The fifth, greed, he relates to idolatry. The seriousness of these iniquities is clear as Paul says that they bring the wrath of God on humanity. They are to have no place in a Christian’s life. We look at the question of what God’s wrath is.

Paul instructs us that our practice must parallel our position in Christ. He begins here, and continues throughout chapter three, to give the moral and ethical demands of the Christian life. His radical approach to dealing with sin in our lives includes what Paul terms “putting to death” the flesh in order to live holy lives. We look at a number of ways to make this a daily part of our lives.

Paul begins to give practical instruction on godliness, emphasizing the seeking of heavenly things. He especially addresses the issue of setting our minds on right things, not on empty earthly matters. The reason for this practice is that, as believers, we have “died” to this world and we are now “hidden with Christ in God.”

Paul speaks to the third of three deadly doctrines, that of asceticism, or extreme unbiblical self-denial, a type of legalism. Paul says that this asceticism is strictly the teaching of men, but it can actually appear to be wise and holy. Christ’s death and resurrection and the grace of God has set us free from the supposed need to appease God with unbiblical self-denial even to the point of self-injury. Plus, these practices are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

Paul addresses his readers about the second of three deadly doctrines in this section of chapter two. The problem at hand is that of angel worship which was being brought into the Colossians church. We look at six dangers of angel worship as well as several warnings about the characteristics of those who practice this type of idolatry.

In this session we look at the dangerous and common problem of legalism. Paul mentions five areas of legalistic potential: food, drink, festivals, celebrations, and the Sabbath day.

Paul continues to address the four results of being made alive together with Christ. The third result is the canceling out of “certificate of debt” against us. The fourth result is that the debt is nailed to the cross. The power of the cross is seen in the disarming of the “rulers and authorities.” Paul says that it was by the cross of Christ that the triumph came.

Paul continues to emphasize our position in Christ. We are “made complete” in Him. We take a look at the practical implications of that statement. We are also circumcised spiritually in Him. This is a circumcision that sets us free from the otherwise necessary dominion of sin. Additionally, Paul, yet again, gives us another facet of Christ’s deity; He is head over ALL rule and authority.
