It was not that long ago that Ammon Bundy led an armed takeover of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge in eastern Oregon. More recently, militia groups came out to defend small towns like Klamath Falls from busloads of antifa agitators who were falsely rumored to be coming to town. Freelance writer and host of the Bundyville podcast Leah Sottile recently wrote an investigative piece for the New York Times Magazine about a relatively new group called the Boogaloo, or Boogaloo Bois. The group’s beliefs seem to run the gamut from anti-racist to white supremacist, but they are united in their love of guns, their anti-government views and the Hawaiian shirts they wear under their body armor. They’ve been spotted at reopening rallies and Black Lives Matter protests. The Boogaloo is a decentralized group and tends to communicate in memes, making them attractive to a younger crowd of men than militia groups like the Three Percenters or Bundy’s followers.
