The Fight Game Podcast: Pro Wrestling, MMA & Boxing

This episode was originally released in September of 2021. We're re-releasing it as a classic episode it as Fumi and Justin take a week off to regroup for the new year.

Justin’s notes from the original episode on Patreon:“On this week’s episode of Write That Down!, Fumi and I talked about the Three Musketeers of NJPW: Keiji Muto, Masahiro Chono, and Shinya Hashimoto. Each musketeer had their own distinct style and personality in the ring, and outside of the ring, each would end up leading very different career paths.“We talked at length about all three NJPW superstars, though our discussion was centered on Chono and Hashimoto especially, as we covered Muto’s career in great detail during our four-part series earlier this year.Fumi explained how Chono picked up his storytelling wrestling from none other than “Bulldog” Bob Brown (of all wrestlers) and recommends some of Chono’s best bouts. We also spoke at length about Hashimoto’s program with Judo silver medalist Naoya Ogawa and how, with hindsight, we can now view Hashimoto as the inadvertent “first sacrifice” of Japan’s pro wrestling Dark Ages, plus lots more.”

Ryan Frederick and Paul Fontaine are back for one final show of 2023 and there is one big show left, which the guys preview. New Year's Eve from Tokyo has Bellator vs Rizin on Showtime with AJ McKee and Patricio Pitbull fighting in the top two fights. But first they discuss the tragic passing of Stephan Bonnar. Ryan shares his personal memories, including being in attendance live at the fight he had with Forrest Griffin in 2005 on the first ever TUF finale. They also go over his career in detail. The question of the week surrounds gifts they would give to MMA personalities if they had the opportunity in kind of a fun segment. The news of the week involves a big main event unfortunately being booked for the Apex, an update on the status of Nick Diaz and ESPN raising the price of UFC pay per views to $80 in 2023.

It’s the last episode of The Boom for 2022, so James and Kevin share their favorite memories of the year and wonder if CM Punk will provide the biggest moment of 2023 as he did in ’21 and ’22 or just go away. Then they list off the final Heat Index of the year and celebrate a first-time #1 that gives both guys hope for some awesome potential matchups next year.
