THE FILM HARMONIC episodes

  • 65. Tenet / I'm Thinking of Ending Things / Best Mockumentaries / Get On Up

Here's an episode that's packed to the very brim with content!

We lead off this week with the anxiously anticipated new Christopher Nolan blockbuster, TENET. Is this destined to be the quote "film to save the cinema"? We give our takes.

The senses aren't given a chance to relax AT ALL as we go into our second film of the week; the latest directorial effort from modern screenwriting legend, Charlie Kaufman. We chat about Netflix's I'M THINKING OF ENDING THINGS.

For our latest PICK SIX, things are dialed back considerably on the tension scale as we count down our choices for the SIX BEST MOCKUMENTARIES OF ALL-TIME.

Finally, we close out the show with a first time watch of one of the late Chadwick Boseman's most challenging roles. He plays iconic pop/soul performer James Brown in Tate Taylor's 2014 biopic, GET ON UP. Rest in power, you bright soul.

    Cheers!

  • 64. Bill & Ted Face The Music / Best Child Performances / Tokyo Story
We meet again! Multiplexes continue to unveil a soft roll-out nationwide, but we decided to stream BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC instead of reserving our seats in the theater. Listen to hear our thoughts on the highly anticipated end of the beloved franchise.
For the latest PICK SIX segment, we break down our choices for the BEST CHILD PERFORMANCES OF ALL-TIME. This one took a bit of time to reduce down to the essentials.
As always, we close out the show with the newest THROWBACK CHALLENGE. It's a self-demanded viewing of Yasujirô Ozu's 1953 classic, TOKYO STORY. There's no good excuse for us waiting this long to finally see such an esteemed piece of cinema.  Hear where we land on it.
    Cheers!

  • 63. Tesla / Best Steve Martin Films / The Sweet Hereafter

A small portion of movie theaters have re-opened their doors at 40% or less capacity. We surely ran straight to the multiplex to see UNHINGED, right?!?

    Nah, not a chance.

Instead, we dive back into the latest VOD stream film with a watch of Michael Almereyda's bonkers Nikolai Tesla biopic, TESLA. Will this one be a crowd-pleasing take on one of the most intriguing and brilliant inventors of all-time, or simply an alienating niche-targeted picture. We give our takes on it here.

In what has been one of the most anticipated PICK SIX segments for Andy this year, we each tackle our choices for the SIX BEST FILMS IN THE CAREER OF STEVE MARTIN. Noah dives into some essential Martin for the very first time in preparation for this countdown. Happy 75th, you damn fine comedy legend.

Closing out this week's show for the THROWBACK CHALLENGE is a hearty discussion on our first-time watch of Atom Egoyan's much-praised 1997 film, THE SWEET HEREAFTER.

    Cheers!

  • 62. Project Power / Films Set at Sea / The Friends of Eddie Coyle

The new film of the week is Netflix's PROJECT POWER, starring Jamie Foxx and good ol' JGL. Does it deliver the goods that an action romp should, or does it fall flat on its face? The boys will let you know with a spirited discussion.

Our PICK SIX segment starts off with sailing puns and various jokes about boats, but our hosts get serious about ranking the SIX BEST FILMS SET AT SEA. Two very different lists this time, and it makes for healthy debate and a hearty discussion of James Cameron's strengths & weaknesses.

And for the THROWBACK CHALLENGE, listener Jake Miller tossed us the 1973 crime flick THE FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE, directed by Peter Yates and starring Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle. It's another 70's classic for Noah to cross off his list and a chance for Andy to further enrich his deep love for that particular decade of cinema.

    Cheers!

We come back fresh after a week off to discuss the directorial debut of Brandon Trost, AN AMERICAN PICKLE, starring Seth Rogen x2 in a dual role.

The PICK SIX segment this time around centers around movies set in and around the world of hotels. Ranking the BEST HOTEL-THEMED FILMS OF ALL-TIME gave us a chance to chat about our past experience in the hospitality industry, and how it was basically responsible for bringing our mutual love of cinema together.

We pair Episode #61 with a THROWBACK CHALLENGE of Billy Crystal's baseball film, 61*. Come on, it had to be done.

    Cheers!

  • 59. Best Films of the First Half of 2020 / Mommy / Aguirre, The Wrath of God

There are ZERO new films to discuss this week, so we head directly into the PICK SIX segment. Each one of us run-thru our selections for the BEST FILMS OF THE FIRST HALF OF 2020.

After that, we decide to bring back the original format for the THROWBACK CHALLENGE, where we each give one another a selection to tackle. Noah saddled Andy with Xavier Dolan's 2014 film, MOMMY, while Andy tossed Noah the much-documented Werner Herzog 1972 epic, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD.

We hope you're all surviving out there!

    Cheers!

  • 58. First Cow / Palm Springs / Best Alien Invasion Films / Once Upon A Time in America

Episode 58 is packed with about as many diverse segments as possible!

The first of two new films this week is the long-awaited new film from Kelly Reichardt -- FIRST COW.

That is followed by a discussion of the new Hulu comedy starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti -- PALM SPRINGS.

Gears are shifted into the world of the extra-terrestrial from there. For the PICK SIX segment, we rank our selections for the BEST ALIEN INVASION FILMS OF ALL-TIME.

To close out the show we pay tribute to one of the greatest film composers ever, Ennio Morricone, who recently passed away. Our THROWBACK CHALLENGE is the final of Morricone's collaborations with director Sergio Leone, the 1984 gangster epic, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA.

    Cheers!

We kick off episode 57 with our takes on the biggest movie topic in the world right now. Yes, Disney Plus has expedited its much-anticipated release of HAMILTON. See where we weigh in on this juggernaut.

From there, a complete 180 is turned as our PICK SIX segment this week tackles the world of EROTIC THRILLERS. We each rank our favorites of the genre of all-time.

In a continuing effort to add variety to the episode, the THROWBACK CHALLENGE we tasked for ourselves is the 1995 French indie, LA HAINE. Many consider it a gritty modern classic. We talk about it.

  • 56. Irresistible / Eurovision Song Contest: etc etc / Joel Schumacher Pick Six / Ironweed

We're back after a short stint away, and we begin with a couple rounds of FIVE GOOD QUESTIONS regarding the new films of the week.

Noah asks Andy about the sophomore directorial effort from Jon Stewart, IRRESISTIBLE, and then the tables are turned when Andy grills Noah on the latest Will Ferrell comedy, Netflix's EUROVISION SONG CONTEST: THE STORY OF FIRE SAGA.

This all leads into a wild conversation on the career of a recently departed filmmaker. We try to rank the SIX BEST FILMS FROM DIRECTOR JOEL SCHUMACHER.

The latest listener-commissioned THROWBACK CHALLENGE gave us the chance to sit down with Hector Babenco's 1987 depression-era drama, IRONWEED, starring Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep.

    Cheers!
