The Financial Griot episodes

  • The Importance of Listening to the Right Messenger during Hard Times

In the wake of the untimely death of Kevin Samuels (Youtuber and Imagine consultant), there have been a lot of conversations about the importance of the messenger over the message.

In this episode of the Financial Griot Podcast, we are talking why you need to fixate on the message over the messenger. The goal is to listen to the good and the bad, but most important learning to take away the key pieces. No one is perfect and no message will resonate every time, but to quote Eddie Griffith "did you get the message?"

As such, did you understand the lesson and how it can affect you? Agree to Disagree?

The topic du jour, "Being Single by Choice." While some could argue that you are happily free and chilling, others could argue that you are simply single because you weren't chosen.

  • "Giving Presents vs Being Present" with the Turnt 30 Podcast Crew

Today's episode features Jay, one of the two Js from the Turnt 30 Podcast were we discuss if Men give other men gifts?

Crazy enough, it's something we never considered so it had to be a podcast. While out numbered, Lawrence holds his own and shares why he believes that men don't give each other gifts. And the ladies banded together like Voltron in opposition. All in jest but none the less an amazing conversation.

If you are a male listener, do you remember the last time you gave your male friend a gift?

  • A Recipe for Social Pressure: Materialism, Lifestyle and Inflation

What I Post, Why I post and How I post about my experience is all intentional" LDG

In this episode of the Financial Griot, we discuss the toxic recipe of materialism and the void of purpose that it steals. While the world enters in the late stage of our expansion with a recession looming, it's not even optional to be financial literate any more. Becoming financial literacy and materially free is not a mere act of minimalism for the gram. It's a struggle upstream from the direction of society.

Turning toward your purpose changes you.

  • "I Deserve a Raise" - The Generation Striving to Work Less and Spend More

By most account, America’s young consumers are stereotyped as a selfish, impulsive, highly indulged bunch. More so than other age groups, Gen Y has been shown to splurge on restaurant meals they probably can’t afford, pamper themselves with impulse buys, and partake in “self-gifting” during the holidays. They’ve also been criticized in the workplace for focusing on their own needs rather than on-the-job performance.

Inflation is coming for us all, but it's about to hammer an "entitled generation."

So says BlackRock president Rob Kapito in a recent conference of oil and gas producers in Austin, Texas, as first reported by Bloomberg News. He said an entire generation would feel the blow of the shortages in goods, housing, and workers associated with the "scarcity inflation" threatening the economy.

"For the first time, this generation is going to go into a store and not be able to get what they want," he said. "And we have a very entitled generation that has never had to sacrifice."

In this episode of the Financial Griot podcast, we discuss what these implications could mean. And are we entitled to the results that we dream of or is the American dream dead?

*Side note, we are also millennials so we might be bias.

  • Mom and Dad Retired with No Savings. It's going to cost you $3k per Month

CNBC penned an Op-Ed, "What millennials, Gen Z need to succeed against the economic odds?"

Well the answer is simple; parents who are financially prepared for retirement. It's estimated that each underfunded retirement plan will cost kids and caregiver upward to $3,000 per month for each aging adult. By 2050, it will get very expensive.

As such, the financial griot invested special guest Ecclessiate Guerrier and brings back guest host for the day, Michael Theodore to have an honest discussion on having the financial discussion with our aging parents. We share what we've experience and learned a few things along the way.

Hope you enjoy. Be warned that our guess were using cell phone mics so it might get fuzzy.

  • Turns Out, There is No Such Thing as Work-Life Balance

In this episode of the Financial Griot, the crew discusses work-life balance or lack there of. The last few months have been tough and filled with challenges and competing interests. Ironically, it's kinda of always been this way. On top of that, these challenges are both necessary and unavoidable on the path of changes.

Not going to lie to you, it's hard out here but you have to learn and adapt to beat the odds.

In short, work-life balance is the state of equilibrium where a person equally prioritizes the demands of one's career and the demands of one's personal life. As such, Work-Life balance is an enduring cycle, not an achievement nor the finish line.

Studies and Research on Post Pandemic Work-Life Balance

To explore this question, 200 in-depth interviews with 78 professionals found that the majority of the interviewees described their jobs as highly demanding, exhausting, and chaotic. They seemed to take for granted that working long hours was necessary for their professional success. However, about 30% of the men and 50% of women appeared to consciously resist working long hours, describing a variety of strategies they developed for maintaining a healthier work-life balance.

While the details of every individual case differed, the study suggested a common mental process that consistently helped this group of professionals to change the way they worked — and lived — for the better.

The coronavirus pandemic has interrupted labor markets, triggering massive and instant series of experimentation with flexible work arrangements, and new relationships to centralized working environments. These approaches have laid the basis for the “new normal,” likely extending into the organization of work in the post-pandemic era. These new arrangements, especially flexible work arrangements, have challenged traditional relationships with employees and employers, work time and working hours, the work–life balance (WLB), and the relationship of individuals to work.

  • Who are You Building For? I Want to do More than Survive

In this episode of the Financial Griot, we are taking you to task as a listener and asking "Who are you building for?". Around this time of the year, New Year's resolution are a thing of the past. You are likely back to paying bills and surviving again. The question is why?

Lovely, Lawrence and Alainta share their own shortcomings as an olive branch so that you can set forth and do your own introspection. The goal is to reassess your Why and gain an understanding that "although you are entitled to the work, you aren't entitled to the outcome."

This is where it stings a bit since not all hard work is equally rewarded, as such you need to remember "Who are you building for?"

  • Love does cost a thing. Americans spent $24 Billion for Valentines Day

Turns out Love costs over $24 Billion (with a B) annually. Valentines date range anywhere from $80 to over $300 if you include new outfits, hair and makeup, transportation, gas and those pesky hallmark cards.

Over 145 million Valentine's Day cards are purchased each year, just behind Christmas cards, which are the most popular seasonal cards. On top of the Hallmark channel, the brand is banking on love. However brand new to the season is Galentines day?

Galentine's Day, formed by a blend of gal and Valentine's Day, is a day in which women celebrate their female friendships. The new holiday debuted in a 2010 episode of Parks and Recreation. The term is also seeing increased use in celebrating any kind of friendship, not just those among women.

"Basically it is women," Lawrence mansplain again. Don't worry this conversation is robust for singles and couples alike. Alainta and Lovely will not go down without a fight for the ladies. This episode is all about the finances of love during inflation.
