"They don't want the truth to be the truth." That's how one father summed up his broken relationship with his daughter's family. Wasn't that true of the Pharisees in Christ's day; isn't it often true of people who grope about in the darkness? Preferring the false comfort of their illusions, they miss God's repeated overtures to invite them to see what's true. That's why the first work of salvation is to set us at rest in the Father's affection so that we will be ready to embrace God's truth when it begins to tear a hole in the lies we believe. No longer needing to protect the fiefdom of our deception, we can awaken to the beauty of God's freedom. They also talk about learning to rely on God's love as the only necessary weapon to engage the world.
