Sustaining this period is difficult, as other challenges rise up and luck can run out. So, when the time comes to make changes, timing is crucial. Squad Building is a natural part in any team’s cycles, but with established hierarchies and intricate dynamics, changing a squad can be a risk too far for many managers - One which must be navigated carefully.

As Lockdown restrictions in Ireland ease and Summer resumes, my time to record the podcast will be curbed. This week, we're looking at retraining positions, a familiar topic of conversation amongst FMers as the years go by. When gaps begin to appear in a team, finding a player to fill them is not always straightforward. What may seem to be a logical choice may not be a seamless fit. Even in the Transfer Market, finding a fit may be unrealistic/unachievable. It could even be there’s a player in your squad who you don’t want to lose, but keeping them in their prime position/role is becoming less & less effective. The answer to these questions could come in the shapes of square pegs, malleable enough to fill the square hole.

Humans love symmetry. Psychologists believe we're more attracted to symmetry than asymmetry. The same applies in football. We confine tactical shifts to crude shapes: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, etc. However, when we look under the hood of the game, symmetry is an ideology, not what really happens. In a sport where asymmetry really rules, it's time to get under the hood and look at what we can do as FMers.
