August 22, 2023 Building a Foundation in Community Unity With Rutgers Law School Dean Clifford Dawkins
Peace Family, On this episode of (The Foundation Podcast) we sit down with the Dean of the Minority Student Program at Rutgers Law School in Newark, NJ, Clifford Dawkins. Dawkins shows us how he build his foundation in America which includes being distinctions such as receiving a Presidential Award from Obama, Interning in the US House of Reps, and being an Associate Mediator for the EEOC.
Dawkins shares with us exclusive information about his background which includes living as a young child in a volatile neighborhood in Kingston, Jamaica. Dawkins talks about how his transition to America was not the easiest when he moved stateside at a young age, as he dealt with the passing of his mother and then becoming an orphan shortly thereafter and being split up from his siblings.
However, Dawkins goes on to document how he used the memory of his mother Marjorie Ann Dawkins, to propel him to take school seriously and obtain a scholarship to prestigious Cornell University, and then onto receiving is masters in Planning and Public Policy, and Ultimately to graduating Rutgers Law School. He also was a student leader for the school becoming the First First Year Student of Color to Become the President of the Law School.
Now in his position as Dean of the MSP Program at the Law School. Dawkins talked about how he cultivated a belief in himself and love for his community that propelled him to be successful. Dawkins also explains how we as a community can start to build a foundation for collective success and unity amongst each other. January 20, 2023 Building a Foundation w/ Navy Veteran and Former Recruiter Karl "Shorty" Phillips (Part 2) - How To Make the Military Work For You w/ Karl "Shorty"
Peace Family, On Episode 29 of The Foundation Podcast(IG) we have Part 2 of our conversation with former Navy Veteran and Recruiter, Karl "Shordy" Phillips.(IG) In Part 1, Karl gave us a brief background of his childhood and the circumstances that led him to the Navy. Phillips also highlights that his past affected his early time in the military and he struggled with fights and disciplinary issues. These struggled morphed into a deep depression once it was combined with struggles back home such as the death of two brothers and the disappearance of another brother.
Phillips then found solace in the sports programs the Navy offered as it gave him another chance to relive his childhood dreams of playing sports at a professional level. His experiences playing sports for the Navy included playing football and basketball in Naples, Italy, and also becoming a standout in boxing, holding the record for the fastest knockout in the pacific fleet at one point. Phillips even earned a gold and bronze medal in the Military Olympic Games in Germany.
One of the major themes Phillips highlights as a reason for his success and overcoming his depression was in his words "the spiritual connection I had while working on my fitness". This is evident throughout the interview as Phillips continuously credits his physical prowess and expertise for being the Foundation on which he began to build his life on. Phillips also reveals how he became a recruiter of the Navy as well and shared his story in order to help inspire other students who come from similar, as well as totally different backgrounds. November 09, 2022 Building a Foundation w/ Karl Phillips - From Menace to Military Standout
Peace Family and Welcome Back to another episode of The Foundation Podcast, on this episode we sit down with a very special guest Karl Phillips. Phillips is a Baltimore, Maryland native who has established a Foundation with fitness and in addition has served his country with the Navy for over 20 years where he served as Petty Officer First Class. Raised in the Douglas projects of Baltimore, Phillips was a typical kid from the outside looking in as he excelled in all sports including basketball, football, and wrestling, even coming from an area where greats like Mugsy Bogues and Sam Cassell. However, even though his parents did everything to keep him out of trouble, Phillips still found a way to begin getting in trouble in streets. At a very young age Phillips had to grow up quickly being based in Baltimore around the civil rights era and also drug epidemics, he had to navigate through hostile environment all throughout the city
Additionally, growing up with two brothers who were suffering from mental health issues in an age where not much was known about the conditions, greatly contributed to the stress on a young Phillips. Phillips cites feeling the need to protect his brothers from bullies and also to look out for them, he had to also be active in the streets. Phillips found out very early the dangers of the street life as at the age of 14, he was involved in a fight in which he nearly lost his life and left him with over 150 stitches on his face. Faced the possibility of an early death or a life in an out of prison, Phillips chose to look for a way out in the form of the military. The interview ends right when Phillips begins a tumultuous career in the Navy.
Throughout the interview, Phillips eludes to the importance of weight lifting at a very young age and how he felt a spiritual connection in the weight room and he felt it was all that he had. The weight room had become the Foundation he used to begin building himself up as a man. The second part of the episode which will be released next week goes into the actual journey Phillips had in the Navy and how he had to fight and ultimately conquer all his childhood fears and demons in order to come out on top. On Part 1 Brazil breaks down the tools necessary to build a spiritual foundation. On this episode, Brazile breaks down how he used his spiritual foundation and emotional Intelligence to help him start his business and get his life on track. Brazile's Company is an intellectual art design company that aims to "Create, Educate, and Innovate" combining a prominent fashion sense with an intellectual direction and influence on the clothes.
Brazile explains some of the nuances of the influences he hints to in his clothing explaining some of the Asian inspired pieces. Brazile also speaks about is how the importance of obtaining emotional intelligence can help you in every area of your life including your relationships, career, and even the amount of money you obtain. Brazile offers up reading as an action step people can take in order to start the journey to build that emotional intelligence and he explains this is the genesis of his desire to own a library one day. Brazile is starting small as he briefly previewed a community reading initiative he is working on, in addition to already being a published author in his teenage years.

Peace Family and Welcome Back to The Foundation Podcast! On this special edition, we catch up with Camden, NJ native and recent Business Administration Major, Corey Henderson. Corey received his business degree at Monmouth University and possesses incredible expertise in the business world which includes a stint managing a fitness gym in Asbury Park, NJ. However, on this episode Corey Henderson talks little about himself and more about his late friend and fellow Foundation Podcast alum, Darvin Henderson.
In December of 2021, tragedy struck the Trenton, Ewing, and Monmouth University communities when Darvin Henderson suddenly passed away due to an asthma attack. This left the organization that Darvin had started, Playmakers Athletics, an organization based in the Trenton/Ewing area dedicated to helping young men with sports and academics with a void for leadership. Corey, who had developed a close friendship with Darvin , who was also featured on episode 21 of The Foundation, and decided that the legacy that Darvin started should not die with him.
Corey kept the legacy running as he was able to generate enough money through the selling of Darvin's Playmakers' brand and donating 100% of the proceeds into a scholarship fund for kids involved with the Playmaker Athletics. The Book Scholarship event will be held on June 11th, 2022 at Caldwater Park from 2pm-5pm! In addition to speaking about carrying the torch with Playmakers Athletics, Henderson also provides listeners with key business administration tools in how to run a business! Peace Family, and Welcome Back to another episode of The Foundation Podcast. On this episode we continue our conversation about sobriety with Basketball Spotlight CEO, and current Support Group Leader, Mike Melton. Last Episode Melton shared the incredible story of how we was falsely accused with his wife's murder and how it pushed him to drink uncontrollably and cause his life to spiral out of control. However, in the second part of the interview Melton shares with us the journey of how he was able to refocus and regain his sobriety.
Melton shares that he has been sober since April 2019 and gives listeners in depth tips and strategies for overcoming any type of addiction and also generally applicable tools in order to assist listeners in building their foundation. Melton even uses his platform to currently share his stories and the dangers of alcoholism to high school and AAU age basketball in hopes that they will find healthier ways to handle their issues. On this episode, we catch up with Anthony Brazile, an Asbury Park, NJ native who is currently the co-founder and owner of School of Concepts clothing brand. In addition to founding his own clothing company, Brazile also became a published author at a very young age of 10.
In this episode Brazile gives listeners a very personal look into his early life and how it shaped the entrepreneurial spirit he possesses today. Brazileeeeee also touches on the more spiritual aspects of his younger life as he discusses how childhood dreams, coupled with trauma led him to a deeper analysis of his feelings and ultimately on a journey of understanding himself. Brazile also speaks about the benefits and knowledge he gained through developing a love of reading and how applying concepts from powerful books like Think and Grow Rich led to him manifesting massive success in his life.

December 23, 2021 Building A Foundation of Sobriety With Mike Melton
Peace Family! Welcome back to another episode of The Foundation Podcast! This episode features a conversation with owner of Basketball Spotlight LLC, Mike Melton as he shares an incredible story of how he built a Foundation in sobriety by conquering an alcohol addiction that nearly claimed his life. Melton is a product of Trenton, NJ and a graduate of Kean University who began an early career teaching shortly after graduation. Melton begins the interview by explaining how he was introduced to alcohol during his freshman year of college and how his alcoholism began to progress in his early years of teaching unbeknownst to him. Melton even shares a story about flipping his vehicle in a car crash and how he took it as a sign that he was invincible and should keep drinking.
Melton then shifts the conversation referring to the discovery of his wife's murder as "the day my life turned upside down". Melton's story is also incredibly compounded not only by the fact that his wife was murdered and he was the one who found her, but to add insult to injury he was named as the number one suspect! During years of suspicion not only from the police and prosecutors but from family, friends, employers, and just about anyone else who came in contact with Melton around this time. Melton was even forced to resign from his teaching position as the school diagnosed him with PTSD which precluded him from continuing his educational career. These circumstances combined to exacerbate Melton's alcoholism as he leaned on the bottle for a crutch, understandably so in a very tough time in life.
The first part of the two part episode ends with Melton sharing a story of how his drinking got so progressive after the trial for his wife, that on one occasion Melton was so inebriated, he thought his friend was an actual demon. Melton even discusses the complications of rehab as he shares a story about how upon leaving rehab to go to a strip club and have a drink the same night. This is when Melton drops to his knees and begs God to help him find a way out, and vows to change his life. On part two of this episode, we learn how Melton navigated the journey back to sobriety.
Melton was incredibly open and candid about his experience which we thank him immensely for. We all may need a helping hand at some point without judgement or sympathy, but sometimes empathy can do the trick. October 22, 2021 How to Build a Healthy Diet and Monetize Your Passion with Chef Jasmere Rogers
Peace Family! Welcome to another episode of The Foundation Podcast and we have a very special episode today with our very own co-host Jasmere Rogers. Jasmere is a Red Bank, New Jersey native who holds dual degrees in Political Science and Law from Montclair State University. In preparation for our pop up event on this Monday October 25th in Red Bank, New Jersey, Jasmere provides listeners with a background of how he built a foundation in changing his diet to vegan and how he eventually utilized Instagram to monetize this passion by becoming a chef.
What stood out about Jasmere's journey is the way in which he utilized social media platform Instagram to not only cultivate and learn more about his passion in cooking, but to ultimately use his videos from Instagram cooking to secure him a chef job at a local vegan restaurant. Jasmere also shines a little light on the negative perceptions he sometimes receives due to his identification as a vegan, and addresses some common misconceptions about the diet as well as helpful strategies we can utilize in attempting to eat healthier.
Overall, even if you are not vegan or not interesting in changing your diet, their are loads of gems contained in Jas' story which can help you in multiple areas of life. The effective utilization of social media is just one of these gems. See if there are any building blocks you can take from Jas to assist with building your own foundation. July 02, 2021 Building a Non- Profit with Clarity CEO Jeff Pierre
Peace Family and Welcome Back to The Foundation Podcast. On this episode we catch up with CEO of the Clarity Foundation, Jeff Pierre. Pierre is an Orange, New Jersey native who received his Bachelor's degree in Marketing from William Paterson University. Pierre then landed himself a position as a Risk Management Specialist for some of the top financial institutions in the USA. Pierre has spent nearly a decade ( 9 years) honing financial skills through dealing with clients such as owners of NBA teams daily.
Pierre outlines how he took his knowledge from working at these financial institutions and decided to apply in a way that would benefit his community in a positive way with the creation of his Non-Profit Organization, The Clarity Foundation. The mission statement of the foundation is "Having an intellectual understanding with a clear vision to overcome any challenge" Pierre certainly strives to help his community overcome any challenge creating specific components of the organization which focus on Sports, Apparel, Investments, Financial Literacy, and Mental Health.
During the interview Pierre provides virtually step by step instructions on how to build a Non-Profit of your own. He lays out specific filing forms required like the 501C(3) which allows people to donate to your foundation and receive a tax benefit, down to the process of finding a grant writer. Pierre then talks about some of the incredible initiatives he has been able to set in motion such as Back to School Haircut events as well as Annual Collegiate Scholarship awarded to graduates. of Orange High School
What stood out most about Pierre is his intense devotion to his community and his unwavering resolve to share all his knowledge. Pierre touched on a lot of concepts such as Financial Literacy, Investing, and Credit repair strategies aimed at helping individuals improve their financial standing. Another point that stood out is that 100% of profits go right back into the community for every event Pierre holds. Pierre briefly touches on the tough environment he grew up in which was riddled with violence and drugs and how he managed to escape that life, with the guidance of some of "gangsters" who wanted better for him. It seems like Pierre is now paying it forward by assisting his community and giving back in any way he can!
