Thursday night I was invited to attend the Faulkner Benefit Dinner in Montgomery, Alabama.
It was a really spectacular night for many reasons. There was fantastic food, some amazing singers, great waiters and waitresses consisting of students from Faulkner, and great fellowship with friends from all over.
They also honored several adoptive parents of Alabama by allowing them their own walk of champions during the middle of the event.
But of course the event could boast of one of its biggest crowds because the main speaker of the evening was Nick Saban.
Senator Katie Britt entered with Nick Saban and spent the next hour asking him questions about football, family, priorities, and retirement. I was excited to attend because of football.

I grew up watching the A-Team. Can’t tell you how many hours Travis and I pretended to be Hannibal, Murdock, Face, or B. A. Baracus. Of course one the most famous, oft repeated lines of the show was said by their leader, Hannibal: “I love it when a plan comes together.” Usually after some wild plan that they concocted ended up working out for the good guys as a way of resolving some injustice done. The intro to the show stated: if you have a problem, if no one else can help, and you could find them maybe you can hire the A Team.

What would you consider as the most powerful word? I’m sure there are plenty of arguments in the world over which word might carry the most weight.
I know on some lists break them into powerful words that convey values or meaning in life: love, faith, wisdom, purpose, and peace.
Others list words that are powerful in vocabulary: formulate, describe, or summarize.
I want to give you a word that I have come to realize is extremely powerful. It is only three letters. It’s not a word that blows you away with its eloquence.

What does it take to make a difference?
I suppose you could do a quick search online and come up with a variety of answers.
There are thousands of stories of people who have done some great deed to make lives better.
On the Ben and Travis podcasts we support works like Liberte that make a difference by helping kids who are less fortunate than so
Other things like Walk for Water that supplies fresh water to people who otherwise have to walk up to four miles round trip to find it.
But there are literally billions of stories around the globe that will never be heard.

A couple of years ago I came across a small pamphlet called “the cookie under the doormat.”
The interactive story inside goes something like this:
Think about two kids. You pick the ages and the gender in your mind. They are simply for ease called A and B.
The first day A and B bring you a cookie. They both want it and you have to decide who gets it.
Of course you want to either break it in half or say neither but that isn’t allowed. You must choose.

Freedom isn’t free.
There is always a price to pay.
In 1776 a band of 56 men met in a hot room in Philadelphia Pennsylvania and officially made a Declaration of independence from England.
The men who signed that Declaration were normal people.
Lawyers, jurists, farmers, and merchants. Men of means and men of education.
Signing the Declaration was crucial to the formation of this country I live in but detrimental to many of those men.

Slow Down
You’ve probably seen those signs as you have driven through neighborhoods in your own home town. Warnings that there are children present in the area so be on the lookout for them in case one mindlessly chases a ball or animal into the street.
Children love to play. I wish I could calculate the number of times in raising my 5 kids that I’ve heard the phrase “will you play with me.” Sometimes the question was posed to me and sometimes to one of the other people in the house.
Psychologists will tell you that children’s play is extremely important to their physical, mental, and emotional development.

Are we there yet?
If I heard that question, or some variation of it, once in the 6 hour drive to the beach I heard it 50 times.
The youngest of the kids asked it the most. The others just looked on their map apps on the phone to figure it out.
But every one of my five have been guilty of saying it at some point in the history of the car rides we have all had to endure.
Truth is, I’ve been guilty of asking that question through the years too.
Ive asked it about car rides, plane trips, boat rides, and mountain hikes.
Destinations speak to us. We feel comfort in knowing we are in motion toward something…and that eventually we will reach that destination.
People climb Everest to reach the summit.

I often talk about my very eclectic taste in music. You might find me listening to country one moment, then 70s rock, then an acapella gospel song.
Or it could be blue grass, then rap, followed by a couple of musical numbers from Disney or broadway.
But in my phone I also have a playlist entitled “Memorial.”
It’s a playlist I made one year so that when I got up and started doing things on Memorial Day I could just hit play and start the day off thinking about the sacrifices of those who have paved the way for me to live in this land of the free.
