On this episode of the Funnel, Lindsay and I are joined by
John
Pulley of Prospect Builders. The discussion is about sales and
how inbound selling has evolved John’s sales techniques and
activities. A veteran sales rep, John Pulley has openly embraced
inbound sales and willingly immersed himself into unfamiliar
waters. Recently, both John and I took HubSpot’s new Inbound
Sales Certification Course. In today’s conversation, we discuss
the four stages of their newly defined inbound sales methodology
and the positive implications it has on sales process.
John reflects on how selling one way for 20 years and then
stepping into a new realm is exciting. Inbound continues to be a
journey. He recognizes how much the legacy sales person in himself
still lurks in the background when he is working a deal. What
impressed him the most about inbound selling is how sales has
evolved and now the entire sales process is personalized. John
Pulley does not just respond to leads; his job is to find
opportunities and sell them.
The value of sales and marketing alignment is everybody
within an organization understands their role in marketing or sales
– and the two bleed over into each other. Contributions to sales
come from everyone. When you have true alignment, somebody in
marketing can make a sale and someone in sales is using inbound
marketing techniques. The lines that once clearly defined and
delineated sales and marketing roles are becoming blurred.
HubSpot has defined their inbound sales methodology in 4 steps.
In the online course, sales reps are walked through how to
incorporate inbound sales techniques into their daily sales

Identify
Learning to identify a true sales opportunity can make the
difference between a business thriving or failing. Chasing leads
that will never close is a colossal waste time and resources. Put
into practice the following skills to weed out potential
distractors and focus on business that can close.
Step 1: Listen for active buyers.Step 2: Practice social selling.Step 3: Proactively identify passive buyers.Connect
Traditional, or legacy sales techniques, taught sales reps to
connect with leads using cold calls, emails, and voicemail. When a

of examining budget and establishing who had purchasing power.
Inbound connections are founded around the buyer’s personal plans,
goals, and challenges. In order to establish a personal connection,
it is imperative to understand who the buyer is. Time is spent
defining personas, developing content, and establishing sequences
for connecting with prospects. Those connections begin to build the

When the buyer expressed interest, legacy sales techniques
dictated it was time for the rep to make a presentation to the
prospect. Using inbound sales techniques, sales reps transition to
an exploratory mode; searching for solutions to the prospect’s
problems. The collaborative interaction between the rep and the
buyer explores solutions that are best for each particular
situation. These ongoing conversations build trust and foster

Presentations are tailored to the needs of each customer,
adjusting the sales process to the individual buyer’s timeline.
Just as with content that is created, the presentation should be
focused on the added value. What are you providing that is more
valuable than your competitor? Your plan should bridge the gap
between where the prospect is and where they want to be in the
future. Reps utilize a 1 – 10 closing technique to fully uncover
why a client might want to do business with them or why they might
not. Both parties weigh the benefits and risks of doing business
together. Deals approach the stage where they are wrapped up –
either closed - won or closed - lost. This is the final step in the
