• [00:10:55] - When AI and machine learning started to become popular, it was more about looking at historical data and trying to predict something new about the new unseen data. Generative AI is a bit different as it could generate text, video, or audio content. Instead of just predicting, it can't create new data and content that could be hard to distinguish from other humans.
  
  
• [00:17:51] - Open AI is one of the most well-known companies in the generative AI space. And other big tech companies like Microsoft, Adobe, and Google are implementing their own versions, or they've accepted the technology and started to build with it themselves. For every major technology company, you can see elements of generative AI. For example, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, and Midjourney are shaking up the design and art space.
  
  
• [00:26:04] - Stanford has said that "these new forms of generative AI have the capacity to change how we think, create, teach, and learn. They may also change our perspective on what is important to learn." There is an unlimited number of generative AI use cases across a wide variety of industries, helping them go from zero to one faster.
  
  
• [00:39:21] - Generative AI still faces many limitations, such as the high cost of use and turning it into a service, the number of queries you can run, technical constraints, and unreliable or biased outputs. But the industry evolves fast, and most of these limitations could be overcome shortly.
  
  
• [00:48:20] - Change itself is exponential, and most people have no idea what it means. Even for someone in this field, it's hard to understand where things are headed and what the future will look like. So looking ten years into the future, at this point, it's almost impossible to predict the magnitude of change. However, we can be sure that change will happen, generative AI will evolve, and we have to keep pace with this shift.
  
  
• [00:56:41] - Generative AI is a technology that can create and disseminate more value among people, leading to an overall increase in the economy. While it may displace or transform some jobs, it will also create new opportunities. In the realm of software engineering, the gap between beginners and experts may widen due to the transformative power of generative AI. Dr. David Leonardi, Founder of the Leonardi Institute, joins Jeff Dance to discuss the future of aging, including approaches to prevent and reverse age-related diseases, the difference between aging and vitality, and lifestyle habits to slow the aging process.
They Cover:

• [00:06:56] The scientific aspect of aging involves changes in DNA and the epigenome that cause debility within cells as well as the top causes of death today, which are coronary heart disease and stroke followed by cancer. Coronary disease and cancer account for about sixty-seven percent of mortality.
  
  
• [00:11:12] The classic approach to disease was to look at a single one and reverse it after it's already been established. A much better way focuses on altering chemical pathways before people get sick so that they can delay or potentially indefinitely prevent diseases from occurring while maintaining their vitality instead of getting debilitated before death. That is where the scientists are focused right now.
  
  
• [00:12:32] When you talk to people about living beyond 100 years old, many immediately picture an ancient person with a three-foot-long beard sitting in a wheelchair in a nursing home. When you slow the aging process, you maintain your healthy lifespan. The scientist's plan for aging is to retain our youth instead of getting debilitated before death so people can enjoy a healthy and active life.
  
  
• [00:21:27] An alternative version of recent breakthroughs in reversing aging is the information theory of aging proposed by David Sinclair. According to this theory, aging is not caused by defects in our genes but rather by changes in the epigenome, which is how our genes are wound around each other. One of Sinclair's students, Yingling Liu, experimented with the Yamanaka factors to reverse aging in mice. However, this resulted in the development of cancer. To address this issue, Yingling eliminated one of the Yamanaka genes responsible for cancer and used the other three to transform old cells into pluripotent stem cells, which did not result in cancer.
  
  
• [00:34:09] To slow the aging process, Dr. Leonardi suggests a low glycemic diet with minimal sweets and starches, plant-based proteins, and fats. He also encourages people to avoid toxins such as saturated fats and trans fats, limit exposure to air pollution, regularly exercise, use nutritional supplements that affect pathways like AMPK (Adenosine Monophosphate Kinase), intermittent fasting to activate AMPK without caloric restriction, NAD chemical messages out from the nucleus to invigorate mitochondria, autophagy, and mitophagy which involve recycling old proteins into active, healthy compounds for use in cells. Dr. Leonardi emphasizes having clean drinking water by using reverse osmosis filters to filter out toxic minerals like iron, copper, mercury, and cadmium from drinking water.

Micah Willbrand, Chief Product Officer and VP of Enterprise at NEC Corporation of America joins Jeff Dance to discuss the future of advanced biometrics, including some common types of advanced biometrics currently in use, main ethical concerns, and how advanced biometrics will evolve in the next ten or twenty years.

• [00:03:07] Micah is a visionary leader that leads pragmatically. He states that many tech companies fail because they are too operationally focused or have a product the market won’t accept for the next five or six years. At NEC, he tries to build a hyper-focused consumer culture and create privacy and consent-focused products and services that will make people's lives easier.
  
  
• [00:06:06] People are familiar with biometrics like fingerprinting and facial biometrics to access smartphones. When we talk about advanced biometrics, there are two factors to consider. Firstly, biometric tech in labs has tremendous accuracy. But the second aspect is how we get biometrics because you need something to capture it. So we're seeing new techniques, like photoacoustic imaging, which works through lasers and ultrasound. The future of advanced biometrics brings various applications, including contactless fingerprints, which will create a more device less world.
  
  
• [00:11:06] NEC technology helped identify the Boston bomber. Regarding government and security, the company helps do the biometric matching for Border Patrol to ensure that the person entering the US is the same person on the passport. In the aviation industry, we see more of the so-called "ticketless journey." For example, Delta has multiple gates where you can board with just your face. Thanks to advanced biometrics, we'll see an outgrowth in protection against fraud.
  
  
• [00:18:38] When consumers hear biometrics, there are multiple ethical concerns. It's one of the barriers for the market to accept this technology. One of the NEC's core pillars is responsible growth, which stands for improving the lives of citizens and consumers but not at the detriment of unethical business practices.
  
  
• [00:26:51] People should be able to do 90% of their daily activities without needing devices, and NEC is working to make it a reality. For example, ten or twenty years from now, when you open your car or get coffee, you can use your face or another biometric to conduct the transaction without a physical wallet or phone.

Healthcare technology investment across high-income countries is directed at drugs and devices explicitly designed to capture higher and higher prices rather than trying to address larger needs. A real trend in the industry represents the possibility of giving the patient autonomy, control, and self-determination.
  
  
• [00:12:20] Given today's problems, we must pay attention to designing products that will work for everyone regardless of socioeconomic status. Augmented reality has the potential to improve diagnostics and enable more advanced remote care. Technology that will enable healthcare providers to get more robust information about the patients they are seeing remotely may be a game changer for ensuring better care. Device developers should be careful to develop products that can meet the needs of the majority of the population rather than the privileged few and advocate for funding streams that encourage the development of devices and solutions to help manage chronic conditions across the entire population.
  
  
• [00:14:41] Designing with intent in healthcare requires recognizing some secular trends. Firstly, life expectancy is increasing. However, the healthy average life expectancy today is about sixty-three years. There is a large gap between the average life expectancy of about seventy-three years and the healthy average life expectancy of sixty-three. Secondly, non-communicable diseases have risen dramatically and account for seventy percent of mortality globally.
  
  
• [00:16:38] Most non-communicable diseases are influenced by social determinants of health, sleep, diet, fitness, and stress. Most people can influence these social determinants, so healthcare technology requires a design shift toward the individual. While the use of technology will include better medical equipment, more targeted and customized drugs, gene-based therapy, and personalized medicine, the most massive shifts will happen by leveraging relatively simple tools like a mobile phone but will require a massive shift in thinking and in the design of health systems.
  
  
• [00:21:35] COVID taught us that people don't always want to come into the doctor's office. Therefore, one segment that has a great chance of emerging is the AI-based Internet of Medical Things or IOMT. One of the problems in AI is collecting enough data. Over time, that issue will get resolved, and more people will collaborate to build these models and share information.
  
  
• [00:23:57] Technological advancements in healthcare can take different directions, like virtual reality, blockchain, machine learning, genomics, proteomics, and digital therapeutics. The continued development of preventative medicine and advancements in personalized medicine are two key areas healthcare technology designers should focus on. We need to shift from what we currently have as a procedural reimbursement model and start charging for the value being added from a healthcare standpoint.

• [00:05:52] A cobot is a relatively new term, which defines a machine that's really approachable to a human being. It also has the element of being easy to use. There are two categories of the cobot: that works with human beings or works alongside human beings. A cobot may be fully automated and fully autonomous doing its own thing. But if a human needs to work or interact with it, cobots allow that to happen with fewer steps involved to transition from autonomous to non-autonomous operation.
  
  
• [00:10:07] In terms of practical applications, cobots are designed to bring the right tools to the right place at the right time. For example, you can use them as mobile transport in hospitals for prescription drugs. The whole idea behind cobots comes down to assisting and working with and for humans.
  
  
• [00:13:57] Advances in software and technology have made it possible for cobots to work safely alongside humans, revolutionizing industries such as mobile telephones with software-defined radio controllers. These controllers allow for managing major parameters such as force management and collision mitigation without a programming background.
  
  
• [00:23:24] The cobot industry will grow thanks to human awareness regarding cobots' role in assisting us in the working process. It's like getting a better tool for doing your job. Another significant factor represents technological progress.
  
  
• [00:29:19] Cobots will have a great impact on jobs in the future. While they can help increase productivity and reduce costs for companies, they are unlikely to replace people one-to-one. In reality, cobots will assist humans in their daily activities. For example, assistive robots could play a big role in taking care of an aging population in the future.

Robotics is the discipline of engineering that deals with the idea, design, building, operation, application, and usage of robots. Robots are incredibly adaptable devices, as proven by the great variety of forms and functions they can perform. Amanda Marrs, Sr. Director at AMP Robotics, reveals how AMP is developing high-tech waste recycling solutions to help create a more sustainable future. Jeff and Amanda take a glimpse at the waste recycling industry—touching on everything from the process of recycling materials and promising technology to international trends and logistical challenges.


They Cover:

[00:08:09] Where does that water bottle go after you throw it in the bin? Amanda describes the physical process of recycling with an example. After the bottle arrives at the processing plant, it's pre-sorted by people, sorted by a cardboard screen, and separated. The ultimate goal is to melt down the plastic to make new products. 

[00:16:11] Amanda discusses her dream for the future: a world without waste. She envisions a circular economy, where products and packages are designed for recyclability first. Doing that will take patience, a lot of data, and economic incentives.

[00:23:13] What will drive change in the next ten to twenty years? Amanda's short answer is—Data. Data. Data. Aggregating local data with national trends yields powerful insights. She explains that data and infrastructure will give enhance analytics capabilities in the next ten years. She says that the speed of change depends on whether economic incentives are "carrots or sticks."

[00:27:04] Countries in Europe, like the Netherlands, are leading the way in terms of sustainability, but North America is catching up. Amanda mentions that she is working with some big CPG companies in North America that are make huge strides toward sustainability goals.

[00:28:38] The dos and don'ts of recycling. Amanda talks about how to dispose of pumpkins, why you shouldn't crush a soda can, and where to put your compost. She also gives tips on how to get involved in the community and your favorite brands.

In this episode of The Future of, Jane Stricker, Executive Director of Houston Energy Transition Initiative and SVP of Energy Transition for Greater Houston Partnership, joins Jeff to discuss the transition towards clean energy to meet the zero net emission goal of 2050. Jane shares her insight on the challenges and the new opportunities driving this journey. 


They Cover:

[00:12:34] Jane discusses how energy companies are facing a dual challenge, rising demand for energy on the one hand and the need to reduce CO2 emissions from the energy cycle on the other. It's a challenge to find the right balance between these competing priorities.

[00:21:33] Jane discusses the exciting events unfolding in the near term, electrifying activities that rely on fossil fuels like transportation and energy storage with solar panels in homes. She also discusses technologies that enable us to recycle industrial heat to generate electricity. Companies across the board are looking at implementing energy-efficient programs.

[00:24:31] Alternate energy programs that show promise and attract research dollars include hydrogen and carbon capture in addition to wind and solar power. Adopting clean hydrogen opens up options for decarbonizing industrial processes like refining and petrochemical processing.  

[00:34:53] The transition to clean energy is a step-by-step process. We can start by replacing coal-burning furnaces with those that use natural gas. That makes energy generation cleaner. Integrate renewables where ever we need backup power generation. 

[00:41:08] While energy generation is still predominantly based on non-renewable sources, accelerated adoption of renewables is shifting the balance. Jane mentions that the type of renewables will depend on geographies, and energy production will move closer to the end consumers.
