Back-to-school clothes shopping can be the most expensive part of preparing for the new school year, but with proper planning and practical strategies, parents can stay on budget while ensuring their children have what they need.
• Prevent overspending by setting a firm budget before shopping
• Use cash instead of cards to help maintain spending discipline
• Sort through last year's clothes to determine what's still usable
• Create a capsule wardrobe with interchangeable pieces
• Check for hand-me-downs from siblings or friends
• Look for uniform exchanges on social media or at thrift stores
• Choose proper closed-toe shoes for school activities
• Remember that "less is more" - fewer clothes means less laundry
• Consider shopping during tax-free periods when available

We need to focus not just on getting our kids ready for back-to-school season, but also ensuring we're taking care of ourselves as parents because without us there's no them, and without them there's no us.
• Take time to just breathe - whatever happens, it's going to be okay
• Create a plan for your school-year routine, but view times as guidelines, not rigid requirements
• Give yourself a gradual wake-up time instead of jumping out of bed
• Coffee and tea will be your best friend, but budget for it - create a small weekly "allowance" for emergency coffee runs
• Meal prep to avoid spending excessive money on takeout ($400/month at Starbucks adds up quickly)
• Pack your work bag the night before and put it in your car to avoid forgetting essentials
• Plan ahead for after-school care and make sure emergency contacts have all necessary information
• Create homework rules - establish a distraction-free environment with no homework in bedrooms
• For student athletes, break homework into daily segments rather than cramming on weekends
• Keep duplicate sports equipment and a spare bag in your car for forgotten items
• Use weekends wisely - do small tasks throughout the week rather than saving everything for Saturday and Sunday
• Take time for yourself, even if just a few hours - if you're not good, your kids can't be good

The back-to-school season brings challenges for parents navigating lengthy supply lists and deciding between self-shopping versus purchasing pre-packaged kits from schools.
• Elementary school supply lists grow longer each year with each teacher requiring different items
• Self-shopping allows budget control with many supplies costing under a dollar during sales
• Pre-packaged elementary supply kits cost $100-167 but save valuable time for busy parents
• Middle school supplies are more specialized with specific color-coding requirements by subject
• Middle school students are notoriously hard on folders and supplies, making extras essential
• Community supplies like tissues, paper towels, and dry erase markers help teachers who often pay out-of-pocket
• Never send all supplies at once – keep extras at home for replacements and homework
• Label all elementary school supplies with your child's name to prevent loss
• Keep spare clothes for younger students to handle accidents without parent intervention
• Shop early for best deals – prices increase as the school year approaches

Returning with another back-to-school preparation episode, I focus on the critical importance of keeping your emergency contact information updated with your child's school.
• Working in schools taught me how common it is for emergency contact numbers to be disconnected or outdated
• Parents often forget to update contact information during school transitions (elementary to middle, middle to high)
• In emergencies, schools sometimes must send police to homes only to find families have moved
• Choose emergency contacts who are reliable, have transportation, and can actually respond if called
• Provide teachers with preferred contact methods (calls for emergencies, texts for behavior issues, emails for documentation)
• Always keep school numbers unblocked on your phone
• Make sure to promptly return contact verification forms when sent home
• Discovered a personal wheat allergy after years of mistakenly believing I had dairy sensitivity
• After eliminating wheat, experienced rapid improvement in swelling, rashes, hives, and stomach issues

Charlie Shante discusses the importance of scheduling back-to-school health appointments early to ensure your child starts the school year with all required medical clearances and in good health.
• Start scheduling physical exams and immunization appointments in May-June while appointments are still available
• Avoid using urgent care for school physicals as they don't know your child's full medical history
• Make sure medication forms are completed and submitted to school with copies for your records
• Consider creating an emergency info card with medication dosages for your child's backpack
• Schedule vision and dental appointments before school starts to prevent learning disruptions
• Allow ample time for doctors to complete sports clearance forms (can take up to 7 days)
• Keep copies of all medical paperwork in a dedicated school binder for easy reference

Manners matter, and I've noticed an alarming decline in basic courtesy among children today, creating challenges for both adults and other kids who interact with them.
• Children as young as five or six showing shocking disrespect to adults and peers
• Parents often defend or deny their children's behavior instead of correcting it
• Children should display good manners consistently, not just when parents are present
• First impressions based on manners can open or close doors of opportunity
• Even talented kids get overlooked when they display toxic attitudes
• Teaching basic respect like "please" and "thank you" should be non-negotiable
• A stranger once gave my son money simply because he displayed good manners
• Summer break is the perfect time to have conversations about respect before school starts
• Children are a direct reflection of their parents' values and teaching
• It takes a village to create positive environments where children learn respect

Breaking life into manageable pieces can make restructuring your life more achievable, just like eating a pizza is easier when it's sliced rather than trying to consume it whole. Using a "four quarters" approach helps identify goals, gather resources, develop self-determination, and create a sustainable game plan.
• Identifying what you want to accomplish in both personal and professional aspects of life
• Building a supportive network of people who offer rational perspective and genuine help
• Changing negative thought patterns through daily affirmations and inspirational content
• Creating sustainable plans to maintain progress after reaching goals
• Recognizing personal warning signs when getting off track
• Practicing guilt-free self-care including adequate sleep and setting boundaries
• Understanding that thoughts become reality—what we believe manifests in our lives
• Letting go of yesterday to focus on what can be changed today

Summer brings unique challenges for parents as they navigate planning activities, managing increased expenses, and keeping kids constructively occupied during the break. From sports commitments that don't pause for summer to the mysterious phenomenon of children who suddenly develop insatiable appetites the moment school ends, this episode tackles the realities of summer parenting with humor and practical advice.
• Summer sports programs can provide structure but require significant time and energy from parents
• Summer camps offer engagement but require early registration (February/March) and budget planning with costs ranging dramatically
• Boys and Girls Clubs and YMCAs often provide affordable summer programming with scholarships available
• Teen employment opportunities (available from age 14 in many areas) teach valuable life and communication skills
• Many counties offer special career and leadership programs for teens paying $10-15 hourly
• Free or low-cost academic enrichment programs can prevent "summer slide" in critical subjects like reading and math
• Children's increased appetite during summer often stems from boredom rather than actual hunger
• Setting clear expectations about meals and snacks helps manage the summer food budget
• Utility bills may increase unexpectedly—review statements carefully and challenge questionable charges
• Document meter readings and be prepared to advocate when utility companies estimate rather than read meters

Memorial Day is specifically for honoring military personnel who died in service to the country, not to be confused with Veterans Day which honors all who have served. I share my personal experience as a military widow and why the common phrase "Happy Memorial Day" is deeply painful for those who have lost loved ones in service.
• Memorial Day falls on the last Monday in May and is a day to mourn and honor deceased service members
• Many people incorrectly conflate Memorial Day with Veterans Day (in November)
• The confusion between these holidays can be harmful to Gold Star families who are grieving
• Now approaching my 17th Memorial Day since losing my husband
• Self-care strategies for managing grief during triggering holidays include allowing yourself to feel emotions
• Practical self-care can include simple productivity, maintaining hygiene, and seeking professional support
• Consider reaching out with a simple message to Gold Star families, understanding they may not respond

Charlie shares a heartfelt and unfiltered Mother's Day episode after her son's brief attempt to take over leaves her scrambling to create content. She opens up about her 25 years of motherhood, the joys and challenges of raising children, and why she wouldn't trade the experience for anything in the world.
• Original plan for son to host the Mother's Day episode fell through when he only recorded a few minutes
• Being a mother for 25 years with a significant age gap between her children
• Balancing life as a single mother with no co-parenting support
• Days that start at 5am and end at 8pm with work, swim practice, and other responsibilities
• Teaching old-school values like ironing clothes and changing out of school clothes
• Importance of self-care and taking time to recharge as a mother
• Mother's Day isn't about gifts but giving moms time to rest and be themselves
