Where is hope? Politicians tell us there is hope in legislation. Moralists tell us there is hope in good deeds. Partiers tell us there is hope in partying. Hustlers and physicians tell us there is hope in a drug. Entertainers tell us there is hope in having fun. But where is hope?

In a nutshell, every person has become their own authority. In our text today, Jesus challenges the authorities of the day and sets himself as THE authority. Jesus can not be stopped; In all of the world, everyone will one day encounter Jesus. No one can ignore him forever. The question is: Will one’s encounter with Jesus be that of delight or dread? In our sermon this morning, we will explore a story of Jesus clashing with religious leaders of his day and ask: is Jesus your foundation or stumbling block?

As we begin 2020, we anticipate a great year. Let’s’ praise God for the work that he will do. This morning we study this old story of Zacchaeus. He was a lost man, filled with greed and corruption—but he met Jesus. In this story, we see the reason Jesus came: to seek and save the lost. As we enter 2020 our, vision follows Jesus: to seek and save the lost. We’re called to be his ambassadors. Will you join us this year as we proclaim the hope of Jesus.

Riches are not only insufficient for our salvation – they can even become a distraction. This morning, we look at the story of the “rich young ruler.” He had everything in this world but nothing in the next. Contrast this man to the disciples of Jesus. They have nothing in this world but everything in the next.

Confident Prayer;

Some people pray because they think God owes them. They’re upset when they don’t see an answer. Others don’t pray at all because they feel unworthy. They don’t expect an answer Today we continue a series in the Gospel of Luke and explore the topic of prayer. How does one unworthy before God pray with confidence? What we discover is that God is a God of mercy and qualifies the unqualified to come before him in prayer.
