#38 The Art Of Branding YOU!
Let's face it, the job search game has changed. There is so much you need to do in today's job market and the competition is very tough. No matter what industry you are trying to get into, there are hundreds of people just as qualified as you.
You can hedge your bet in several ways, updating your resume, hire someone to write that top notch cover letter AND update your resume, hire a career changing coach who can help you with interviewing and salary negotiations, and/or networking to get job referrals, which according to my research this can be risky if it's not with the right person.
So, what do you do? Well, one thing you can do is to brand yourself. According to SIA Global Staffing Solutions & Workforce Solutions, 70% of employers are looking to see if the candidate uses social media, 50% are looking for a professional persona, 58% for information that indicates that you qualify for the position and 22% for a reason to NOT hire you.
Therefore, not to add another thing to your list of things to do, but having a personal brand is very important. Branding yourself allows you to control what others say about you. It's YOU, so why not be in the driver's seat.
So what is a personal brand? It's similar to a company's brand, but it's about you. For example, when you hear Target and Walmart. What images come to mind? One is red the other is blue.
From my experiences in both places, I think faster check out and long lines. You determine which I'm referring to. But, basically, it's what people think of you.
People like to be around people they know, like and trust, and building your personal brand is very important for you as an employee as well as an entrepreneur, it's how you present yourself to the world.
When branding yourself, you incorporate your beliefs, philosophies, experiences and thoughts on a specific topic. There is a specific group of people in the industry circle you work with, there are targets of people who will resonate with what you have to say.
This will create associates of people who are associated with specific topics and areas in an industry. For example, think of these particular words, Kleenex means tissues, Band Aid means bandages, Google it means research.
And in my industry background, SPED (special education) means someone who needs additional support for learning which could be any number of things from changing the color of text, audio note taking, to breaking down concepts into smaller pieces for easier understanding. You see, everyone who is in any industry has brand associations.
In order to be known for topics, you have to brand yourself. I'm going to list two people in the education industry that most have heard of, Max Thompson and Harry Wong. And in online course creation Maria Foeleo.
These people have created a brand awareness around themselves that have developed million dollar industries. I'm not saying that this will happen to you, and I am saying it could. But it all starts with personal branding.
Developing a personal brand allows you to develop a mark around your name and career. This allows you to showcase what you have to offer in your industry. Being a thought leader in 21st Century education or UX platforms for small businesses allows you to express your skills, experiences and beliefs on a topic that will allow you to become the thought leader in that area of your industry.
Now, you can control your career and how you are seen in the marketplace as well as impacting your ability to land the right job and or promotion you seek because you will show up as top talent and this will allow you to attract the right offers in your industry.
So you ask, how do you do this?
First, decide your goals in your industry. If you want to be a nationally known leader in your industry, read, research, share your beliefs, experiences, practices and discuss the good and the bad of what you've experienced.
Decide where you want your future career to be?This will allow you to have a direction of where and who to align with in your industry.
Second, build a website. This allows you to share and create content on your terms, as well as show your unique perspective and stand out and create a new footprint.
Third, share videos, blog posts, content, infographics, and you are able to share based on your social media outlets such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.
Having a website shows your skills and credentials, passions and interests and your core values and beliefs.
