Push Nevahda host of The Gist of Freedom's show is welcoming our special guest, Underground Railroad conductor, Thomas Garrett's descendant,Thomas Robert E. Seeley. The Garrett family, who lived in Upper Darby, Pa., were strong abolitionists on the Underground Railroad, the most famous was Thomas Garrett who helped over 2700 freedom seekers to freedom. More than 150 years ago, Wilmington’s Quaker Hill neighborhood was a busy stop along the Underground Railroad. Garrett transported human cargo by boat, train, carriage, wagon and foot and used a network of people he could trust to move a family from one station to the next. Our special guest today Robert E. Seeley is a member of the Garrett family.

The larger-than-life, bronze sculptures are the vision of Vinnie Bagwell, a Yonkers artist long active in bringing public sculpture to the city’s downtown. Her sculpture of Ella Fitzgerald, who was raised in Yonkers, stands outside the Yonkers train station. She also oversaw creation of a sculpture garden on the Hudson River.

The DuPree African-American Pentecostal and Holiness Collection is housed at the Schomburg Research Center, New York Public Library. DuPree, a former Smithsonian Fellow. Professor Dupree's research has covered African American gospel music and the Holiness-Pentecostal religion. he Pentecostal project began when DuPree, then a librarian, at the University of Florida.
