Superhero movies have dominated Hollywood for the past two decades, but not every franchise was destined for success. In this video essay, I take a deep dive into 9 failed superhero franchises and explore what really happened to them. These are the films that were supposed to launch cinematic universes or long-running series… but instead ended in disappointment, box office bombs, or studio reboots.

From the infamous Green Lantern (2011) that was meant to start the DC Universe, to The Amazing Spider-Man films that collapsed right before Marvel’s Spider-Man takeover, to Sony’s failed Sonyverse, I explore why these movies didn’t work and how they changed the superhero landscape. I also cover recent examples like Black Adam (2022) and The Flash (2023), which were both supposed to reshape the DC Universe but instead marked its collapse.

I also dive into lesser-discussed superhero failures like Bloodshot (2020) and Eternals (2021), as well as the notorious disasters of Fant4stic (2015) and Suicide Squad (2016)—movies that had ambitious plans for sequels and spin-offs, but ultimately left audiences and studios disappointed.

This video asks the big questions: Why do some superhero franchises succeed while others crash and burn? What lessons can Hollywood learn from these failures? And what does this mean for the future of comic book movies?
