Lisa – Single parent of a child with fragile X syndrome, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, autism with PDA. Lisa talks about her struggles trying to get the correct diagnosis for her child Iggy, from the NHS to going to the private sector and trying to navigate the system, feeling isolated for two years. Lisa talks about how parents of children with additional needs can go through a grieving process and how this has, and still does affect her, how she found support in unusual places and about learning through her child.

Lisa is passionate about supporting parents who are dedicated in supporting their children with additional needs and has been facilitating courses for the parents of additional need children for 5 years. She has worked with children and adults with additional needs and they too have been her teachers.

This has lead her to set up Special World Training, where she can teach and share what she has learnt and put into practice, strategies that have helped her create a positive relationship with her child, and which will allow her child to reach his full potential. She has created Special World Training, so as to be able to offer specific courses to help parents with the various needs of their child. They are available as live events and online.

Craig is the father to 22 year old twins Stuart and Mathew, who both have Fragile X syndrome. Craig talks about Project Search, a fantastic programme which supports young people into adulthood. It offers a variety of independent living options, work experience being an option which both boys decided to do after attending a college to learn independent living skills, including travel training.

Craig talks about his love of football and how pleased he is that both the boys share this love and now to go to football together. Craig supports the twins with their Twitter account which helps with Fragile X awareness

Jenny has two children, her eldest has a diagnosis of Tourette’s and OCD and her youngest is autistic. Jenny talks about the school resisting supporting her with EHCP’s and how she resents the constant fight to get her children’s needs met and the impact this has had on her own mental health, as well as her children’s.

Joseph was born with Choanal Atresia, a rare condition in which nasal passages are blocked by bone or tissue. Jenny talks about being better equipped to fight for her youngest child after empowering herself with knowledge about SEND law. Jenny explains she wanted to set up Action 4 SEND mainly out of frustration and isolation, both for herself and her child.

Marta talks about the challenging and very worrying side to having an autistic child who struggles with eating. We talk about ARFID (Avoidant, Restrictive, Food, Intake Disorder}, and how her child has still not been given this diagnosis even though she has seen many dieticians over the years. Marta also talks about how beneficial having a SEN dentist for her child has been.

Sophie is the parent of two boys, her eldest son is neuro-typical and Edward is autistic. Sophie writes a blog, Mummy of a Square Peg, about life experiences with Edward. Sophie talks about her love of camping and why she believes camping can be a wonderful experience for families with autistic children if the correct planning and preparation are put in place first. Rebecca is American and has two children. We share our experiences of the challenges we faced getting the correct diagnosis for our children and how important it is to get professionals who understand and support the whole family at this challenging time.
