Half of us will get a heart or circulatory condition in our lifetime. Right now, there are around 7.6 million people living with heart and circulatory diseases in the UK, around 4 million are male.  Heart and circulatory diseases cause around a quarter of all deaths in the UK; that's more than 160,000 deaths each year, or 460 each day – that’s 32 during this podcast.

Dr Ed Davies is a Consultant Cardiologist at University Hospitals Plymouth. He completed his training in London and the Southwest. After completing his doctorate in the field of atrial fibrillation, he went on to become the clinical lead of the devices and heart failure services in Plymouth.

He is a safe and effective operator, comfortable with the implant of all device types (over 300 per year, including pacemakers, ICDs, cardiac resynchronisation therapy, loop recorders). He holds full European Heart Rhythm Society accreditation.

Keen to drive innovation, he regularly contributes to national and international studies on a wide range of subjects.
He regularly sees patients with all aspects of cardiological conditions including palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath and dizziness / blackouts in both the NHS and private setting.

Jon Kennedy is a retired Detective Chief Inspector who spent his entire 30-year career with the Metropolitan Police. During his career he was posted to the Territorial Support Group, the Murder Squad, Internal Affairs, Safeguarding and other various command groups within the Met. He has been part of senior leadership teams for major public order events such as the Notting Hill Carnival, New Year’s Eve and other large scale public order events. At times he was responsible for high profile murder cases and other serious crimes. 

Jon has been interviewed by most of the TV channels in the UK and has travelled all over the world, from Europe to the Falklands islands. Jon has just recently had a paper published by the Home Office Affairs select committee into ways of increasing the arrest and charge rate for the sex offence beginning with ‘R’ and ending in ‘ape’.

Throughout his career Jon has been driven by a need to maintain high professional standards, to support the victims of crime to lead from the front and continually confront those that were unable or unwilling to maintain such standards.

In March 2023, Baroness Louise Casey, concluded a year-long investigation into the Metropolitan Police force. The report found that ‘the Met’ is institutionally racist, sexist and homophobic; has inadequate management; examples of predatory and unacceptable behaviours, humiliating initiations and a bullying culture… 

Expect to hear Jon’s reaction to the Baroness Casey report findings and the everyday perspective on working in ‘the Met’. Jon’s describes his initiation, talks about some his scariest moments, tells some hilarious stories and much more...
