Aleesha Magpayo is a multi-talented young woman from Melbourne's North-West who writes poetry, sings, raps, and can even beatboxes. In recent years, since losing her beloved mum Dalila, she has been using poetry to express her experience of grief and to stay connected to her mum.
In this episode, we hear about Aleesha's reality of living without her mum as a teen and some of the things that surprised her about grief. It's not often that we hear from young people about what it's really like to lose a parent, and we hope you can appreciate the courage and strength it took for Aleesha to share her story.
This episode highlights some of the lesser known aspects of life after loss. It begins by Gaby asking Aleesha to tell us a bit about her mum.

Meet your host, Gaby Georges from The Grief Cocoon.
In our first ever episode, you'll hear about Gaby's story and why this podcast exists.
Being a sheltered 20 year old, a creative and the youngest of four sisters, she never imagined that losing her Mum - Samira - could become a reality...until it happened.
In this vulnerable re-telling of her journey, she takes you through the challenges she faced, how she learnt that she wasn't alone, and what helped her through.
Gaby is a multi-faceted creative. She's a writer of poems and songs, a musician, performer, and one-time playwright through her immersive theatre show - 'Rise & Fall' - a show about her Mum and the journey of grief. She's passionate about the use of creativity to process, express, and transform grief. Gaby started The Grief Cocoon to raise awareness of the realities of grief and give people creative tools to process grief and connect with others.
