  • IBG 20 - Kelly Exeter - Controlling Your Thoughts as an Introvert

Kelly Exeter is a writer, editor, designer, speaker and business owner who is constantly working to find a balance between achieving the big goals she sets for herself while also being present for her family. A graphic and web designer by trade, she founded the boutique agency Swish Design ten years ago. While she continues to work behind the scenes at Swish, she recently stepped away from the front lines to take on the role of Editor at Flying Solo, Australia’s largest online network for solopreneurs and micro-business owners. Kelly has published three titles and hopes to eventually focus on writing full-time. She has written extensively across the web for sites such as Mamamia, The Hoopla and Women’s Agenda as well as for print publications including Marie Claire. Kelly is also a blogger who shares her thoughts about living a simpler, more intentional life at kellyexeter.com.au.

    In this episode you’ll learn…
    • How she approaches parenting an extroverted child.
    • How she and her husband work together to leverage their strengths, as he handles traditional one-on-one client interaction and she pursues content creation, design and online networking.

    • How she makes the conscious decision to participate actively in conversation and avoid overthinking.
    • How understanding that you don’t have to engage every thought that enters your head led to a breakthrough in her meditation practice.
    • How a Myers-Briggs test influenced her decision to let go of the responsibilities of running her business and choose an environment where she could thrive.
    • How a love of routine can be freeing as it allows you to think less.
    • Why uncertainty is particularly challenging for introverted entrepreneurs.

[spp-player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/introvertbizgrowth/Introvert_Biz_Growth_Podcast-019-2.mp3"] Hani Mourra is the CEO and founder of Simple Press Plugins, an online media company specializing in automation software for content creators. As a software engineer and online marketing coach, Hani is passionate about helping businesses generate more leads using online video and podcasts. Hani and I met online many years ago when our business models were developing, and we reconnected recently when I heard him as guest on another podcast, then purchased his SimplePodcastPress automation tool, and finally asked him if he considered himself an introvert – because I had a gut feeling we had that in common. In this episode you’ll learn…
    • How he came to enjoy professional conferences, despite being intimidated initially.
    • How using social media can help an introvert develop relationships before meeting new people in person.
    • Why speaking on a topic he loves and knows really well makes him feel more comfortable in a public platform.
    • How he learned to deal with the uncertainty that comes from being an entrepreneur, though that can be especially difficult for an introvert.
    • How following his gut and doing what he loved led him to the successful development of his business in automation software for content creators.
    • Why it’s okay to start small and develop your business part-time. You don’t have to go all-in right away!

  • IBG 17 - Sarah Santacroce - Are All Introverts Non-Materialists?
[spp-player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/introvertbizgrowth/SARAH.MATERIALISM.FINAL.mp3"] Could there be a connection between being an introvert and non-materialism? Today it’s just me again and in this shorter episode I’d like to talk about materialism. It wasn't planned that way, but I think it's quite a good fit for this time of the year, just a week before the Holidays! My husband and I recently discussed how we noticed that when people are in their forties to fifties, there’s two types of behaviors: you have those who enjoy materialistic things (sports car, expensive watch, designer hand bag, etc .etc.) and then you have those who prefer to spend their money on experiences (vacations, weekend trips, concerts etc). So question to you: do you enjoy material things or do you prefer experiences? Could there be a connection between being an introvert and non-materialism? Listen in to find out my thoughts on the subject. [spp-player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/introvertbizgrowth/SARAH.MATERIALISM.FINAL.mp3"] Resources mentioned in this episode:

[spp-player url="http://traffic.libsyn.com/introvertbizgrowth/SARAH.ANDY.MORT.mp3"] Today I’m to talking Andy Mort. Andy was introduced to me by my previous guest, Cat Rose. She suggested him because he also hosts a podcast and so I listened to his show and thought it would make for an interesting conversation. Andy is a UK-based musician and writer. He makes and performs music as Atlum Schema and is also the founder of SheepDressedLikeWolves.com; a Blog and Podcast dedicated to encouraging introverted and highly sensitive people to embrace their creativity and push against the expectations of an often overwhelming world. Andy is a multipotentialite business owner (he runs an online membership site for introverts/HSPs, and is in the process of launching one for songwriters), and also a part-time undertaker! I’ll make sure to ask him about that one too. In this episode you’ll learn :
    • How he discovered he was an introvert.
    • How he's not all about doing things for money. He has to care about what he's doing beyond a way to make money.
    • About coming up with an 'upper enough' income goal (I love that !)
    • How he is grateful to be able to make music, especially with his friends.
    • And how his introversion relates to his side job as an undertaker ;-)

If this interview sounds like two friends chatting than that’s because that’s exactly what it is. I’ve known Ian for a good while now and we’ve been on a mastermind together, where we talked over Skype on a weekly basis. I’m thrilled to have him on my podcast as we’ve discovered that we have quite a few things in common, besides being introverts and highly sensitive people. Ian Anderson Gray is the founder of Seriously Social, a very popular blog focused on social media tools, efficiency and productivity. He’s a speaker, trainer, teacher, web developer and consultant. He has a passion for turning the techno babble of social media marketing into plain English.
