In the 1930s, reports began to circulate across Europe of a song so mournful it was said to drive listeners to suicide. From Budapest to London, victims were found with sheet music in their hands, gramophones still spinning the tune, or notes quoting its lyrics. The song was Szomorú Vasárnap – “Gloomy Sunday” – written by struggling Hungarian pianist Rezső Seress after a heartbreak.
