The Hunt for Greatness with Greg Todd

The first few months when I have my clinic with hardly any patients, you know what we did? We played dodgeball at night. We have three patients, so we just played dodgeball. We just had a whole lot of fun because that’s what I do. I have a lot of fun. Now, that we have these amazing clinics, guess what we do everyday? Go into the hall right now, you will see my staff just did these crazy pictures and we just had fun all the time. As a leader, I create that and I just want you to see that you can be different. If you are all about the fun, you can do that and still work hard; you can do that together.

You have to learn being comfortable with being uncomfortable. When I broke 25 minutes in my 5k, I was uncomfortable. When I broke 22 minutes in my third 5k, I was uncomfortable. When I broke 20 minutes in my eight 5k, I got uncomfortable. I had to get uncomfortable with training, with the race. When I broke 19 minutes in 2009 in my 5k, I was super uncomfortable. I was uncomfortable with my training, during the race, I was uncomfortable after but that’s when the magic happens. It happens when you are uncomfortable.

In physical therapy school, you learn how to become a practicing clinician, a basic practicing clinician and that’s it. The problem is that you are learning the same stuff that I learned 16 years ago, you are getting paid about the same, it’s just that the investment is about ten times the amount.

The one thing I want to tell you guys today is if you have aspirations of getting into business and your reasoning for getting into business is similar to mine which is two things, I want to have as much impact as possible and I want to be able to spend the most amount of time with the people that I love the most. If that’s you, then I actually want you to think of a few things, I want to show you proof because that’s what I am to people. I am just a proof that it can happen. I am proof that you can do both; you can achieve both. Not one, and sacrifice the other, but both and I just want to show you that today.

I did not get a Masters in Business. I learned a lot of things the hard way but there are many resources out there that can teach you a lot of the things that have been able to get my practice to where is now which is three consecutive years of generating over 1 million dollars in net revenue and at the time of this video we’re up 40% from last year.

The problem is that the amount that physical therapist aren’t getting paid have not increased in line with the student loans. That creates a big problem. And for me, to decide to be an entrepreneur, it was totally a choice of lifestyle and of freedom to do the things that I wanted because I felt that I can help patients in a different way than traditional physical therapy corporations were doing.
