Decrease the amount of time you spend on comparing yourself to others in your career who are "further along" than you and collecting reasons why they have what you want.

Instead, spend more time thinking about what actions they take consistently in getting there, then do those things.

And don't let your mind trick you into thinking that they got there by some trick or something immoral. Or think that "I just won't do it that way" or "I'd be able to do that if not for...."

In the realm of career success and upward mobility, all the reasons you come up with for why you can't are just bullshit excuses. Focus on what you can take action on.

Don't get me wrong, take action within your set of values. You have your guiding principles and your moral compass. But too often people compare and make up stories that get in the way of their success, before they even have a chance. Make sure you aren't convincing yourself of something that has no power over your career success.  

Start comparing to win, stop comparing to lose.

You even wonder why people outside of your job are always talking about leadership? And the skills they don't teach you in school? And how understanding each other and having "empathy" will increase your success and happiness at home and at work? Or "insert here" any other handful of skills discussed by others on LinkedIn.

Well, because it's true. And it's talked about & PRACTICED everywhere outside of your day to day at work because you have a job to do, and to make the company money. It takes 95% of your effort.

Like most things in life, you supplement your knowledge and gain skills outside of the "main" thing you are doing at the time, and bring that learned knowledge and those skills to the thing in order to really excel at it.

Attending college for example. Goal = pass all tests and get good grades

well, to do that = homework, scouring the internet, asking ChatGTP, asking friends, study groups, re-reading the textbooks, doing calcs, etc. (not just going to class)

 Same thing in your engineering career. It's not just showing up and DOING a job.

It's spending the time outside of work developing your ability to work with other humans and understand the dynamics of working within teams.

This volunteer run organization is a hub for learning from real people, with real human problems to solve, in a setting outside of you day job, from people that understand your day job. The huge benefit is talking with them about all the stuff you don't normally get to talk about (or feel you can) so freely at work.

If you and your organization could stand out in others' minds as the engineers that are stress free, solutions-oriented, organized AF, helpful, clear and concise communicating, bringers of problem resolutions -------- would you do it? Is that valuable?

Or,

As long as the job gets done, nothing else matters? Who cares what happens along the way?

I figure most people will say that the former is of high importance. And I would guess that even more people aren't tracking any metrics around if they are being successful at it or not.

People will choose to do business with those they know, trust, and respect. Even if their service they provide is not "top notch." We can argue all day long about who does what better (especially amongst ourselves and our competitiors), and it won't mean a damn thing.

While we spend time thinking we are the best engineers around and provide the best service, others will be meeting and developing relationships with others in the engineering industry that we do business, and gaining more work.

It doesn't mean that we don't get better (as individuals and organizations). It does mean that if nobody knows about you or your stuff, you'll have a hard time growing and taking advantage of opportunities and gaining some great clients.

This goes for both the business and your career. So get used to building relationships with others in an intentional way. And it starts with simply getting out there.
