Sometimes the universe sees fit to allow an opening in the dynamic schedules of our colleges to coalesce with ours, at the exact moment in time for greatness to happen! I'm very grateful the infinite wisdom of the powers that be graced us with such an occasion last Wednesday night at Latchkey Brewing. Thank you once again to Latchkey for allowing us to record at their place!

On this show, we are joined by Danielle and Abel from Beer For Breakfast on 91X! It was delightful hanging out with these perennial supporters of the San Diego craft beer industry. Abel does drop a bummer of an update in there but there's also a lot of laughter.

This is the type of show that reminds me how special the SD beer community is; I've never been invited by another contractor to collaborate on a home remodeling project, for example. There's several options for your indie/craft beer radio and podcasting needs here and it's really awesome that we're all friends.

We brought on some friends of the show, Travis Hudson, Beth Demmon, and IanC heesman to discuss the main happenings in San Diego #indiebeer for the year. Brandon Hernandez is back in his hosting chair and we give him a proper introduction!

The discussion weaves through brewery closings, major expansions, openings, and we talk about our Top 3 beer events of the year!

It’s a time for reflection and pondering on the occurrences of 2018, with a positive eye on the future. I/we are remarkably lucky to have and thankful for all of you! Without the incredible support of our Patrons and the San Diego indie beer industry and community we would not have been able tos tart TIBS! I’m astonished with how well the new show has commenced and have an extraordinarily positive viewpoint of the future of the show. The addition of David, and now Brandon, has felt natural and inevitable. Will we reach our full potential? Probably not, but the future sure feels bright over here at The Indie Beer Show!

In this episode of TIBS! we are discussing a lot of the costs of opening a brewery in San Diego. We are joined by the Finance teacher from the SDSU Business of Craft Beer Certification program, Debra Druther, future 15 BBL North Park brewpub owner, Steve Billings, and Jonathan Barbarin from Thunderhawk!

We go through a great deal of the costs you need to consider when developing your business plan; John and Steve offer their insight on their planned costs and what reality was/looks like it will be. I offer some insight into costs related to opening a Brewery Igniter Program , which underlines one important fact, there is no way to open a brewery without a lot of cash on hand; whatever you're thinking you would need in your mind right now, double it.

As the show deepens you'll hear the drastic costs differences between a nano brewery mainly built by its owners and a premium brewpub designed and built by San Diego's best. Many times there were jokes about if they had really known what the real costs and timelines were going to be, they may never had even attempted to open a brewery. I have often said it takes an almost unrealistic, positive attitude, and extreme confidence in one's self to overcome the mountain of hiccups and challenges even the best planned breweries encounter, long before they can sell even one pint of delicious beer.

We're very happy to offer you some insight from "behind the curtain" and highlight some of the vast cost differences between brewery sizes here in SD. Steve and John were both very open in regards to their actual budgets and costs and I thank them heavily. This is one of the aspects of the industry in San Diego that makes it very easy for us to do our jobs; I highly doubt many business owners would "open their books" and tell the public what it cost to build their location.

We were excited to be invited out to Deft Brewing for industry night! It's always fun when we get to hang out with members of the #SDBeer world that make all the delicious beer we obsess over!

Also, here's some giant news from TIBS! central; Brandon Hernandez, Editor at Large from the West Coaster and Chief Marketing Officer of Societe Brewing, has joined us as our new, fourth host! We couldn't be stokeder (yes, that's a word now!) on his decision to slum it up with us on a weekly basis. If you see him around, give him a welcome high five!

Back to Deft; we begin the show with the owner, Morris Nuspl, we discuss his brewery, his system, some of the beers we're enjoying, and how it's been for the first year of their existence. If you were not aware, Deft celebrate their first anniversary in October. I really enjoyed the feel and comfort of the tasting room. They have a great patio as well. Most importantly, the beer they are making is stellar, especially if you appreciate classic styles, brewed with super clean flavor profiles. Go check them out if you haven't yet!

We then turn our focus to brewmaster general, Paul Segura! I often joke about Karl Strauss and Paul being new and it slipped out again during his introduction on this show. I'll try to let that joke die, the horse has been beaten soundly. We have a great talk with Paul and there's a lot of Michael Peacock, from Tapcraft LLC, love through in there for good measure.

Fresh off their gold medal and being awarded Small Brewpub of the year at

GABF, we got to sit down with Jim Millea, the head brewer of Ocean Beach

Brewery.

Imagine, if you will, that you had just come off 10 full days of #SDBEER

week but were still obligated to show up at a local brewpub that you

somehow had never visited. That was the mindset I was in entering this

show, I was a little worn down to say the least. Then Esthela offered to

grab me a Hodad's cheeseburger (very close to OB Brewery)! That fixed me

right up and I was more than ready to tackle another night of drinking and

fun!

We are Davidless (is that a word?) for this episode, he had just left for

an epic vacation. We put our jealousy aside, because we're professionals

(ha!), and setup our gear on the 2nd floor at OB Brewery.

We discussed how Jim got his start in beer, what lead to him getting the

job at OB, and his reaction to winning these prestigious awards! There's

also beers and other fun nuggets in there.

In this episode of TIBS! we are kicking off #SDBW (San Diego Beer Week) with a live show at one of Stone Brewing's satellite locations. This was a great way to celebrate the commencement of the eleven days of beer week we set our selves up for!

The Stone Company Store - On Kettner was celebrating their 5th Anniversary and was generous enough to invite us out for some fun. We began the show with Laura Ulrich, Small Batch Brewer. We dig into her history at Stone Brewing and dip into her other role as President of the Pinks Boots Society. If you're good at math, you'll hear I mess a stat up by a magnitude of 10! If you do notice, message me you're funniest, decimal point mistake meme.

We're then joined by Kris Ketcham, Senior Manager of Brewing at Liberty Station and David Wilson, his assistant brewer. We discuss Kris' start at Liberty Station, some of his fondest memories (and beers), and what's currently going on there.

We close out the show with Andrew Snodgrass, shift lead at the Stone Company Store - On Kettner. He has an original beer that sparked his interest in craft, I've never heard anyone answer our most asked question like he did! We lament about missing Stone Brewing in South Park, discuss how he got his start at Kettner, where he was when he found out he got his job with Stone, and what he loves about working for the biggest indie beer producer in San Diego.

Sometimes we're lucky and get invited to some fun stuff, this was not an exception! The amazing people over at Second Chance had us come out for the release of Blend-O-Matic, a new, revolutionary collaboration with the juggernaut, AleSmith. In an extremely unique concept, they brewed 2 completely different beers, one a hazy IPA, the other a brut IPA, with the intention of being physically blended. The combined, result is available on draft, but what pushes this collab into the stratosphere of awesomeness is that you can purchase mixed 4 packs (2 cans of each beer) of 16 oz cans and combine the beers at your whimsy! I'm a fan of the 50/50 combination that is available at 2nd Chance, but maybe you like 60/40, or gasp 30/70!

We were hanging out on the Beer Lounge patio in North Park, first joined by Marty Mendiola, the Co-founder and Brewmaster of Second Chance, and Peter Zien, CEO & Owner of AleSmith. These guys are both integral to the history and success of #SDBeer and we were still a little star struck that they sat down with us. Personally, I didn't even mention Speedway Stout being the only member of the Sore Eye Cup Hall of Fame until after we were done recording with Peter. It was a great time to get to hang with these two legends, who clearly have a great friendship, as you'll hear!

In the second segment we have Ryan Crisp, Director of Brewery Operations and Colin Field, Specialty Brewer from AleSmith. We discuss the origin story of the brut IPA side of the Blend and many other terrific things currently happening inside the mega complex on AleSmith Court. Yes, if you didn't know, the street where they are located is literally named after the brewery.

We close out the show with Rudy from CraftBeerd (and now Jolly Spaceship) and Virginia Morrison, CEO and Co-Founder of Second Chance to talk about the art work and the overall collaboration spirit behind the Blend-O-Matic endeavor.

We had so much fun recording #6 in a construction site that we decided we should do it again! A big thank you to Steve at U31 for letting us this space once again. We invited over some friends of The Show, Morgan Tenwick, Jen Mann, and of course Travis Hudson, Mr. #stout365, for some "drinking a bunch of stouts" fun in a slightly creepy location! We also break down our Top 3 got to beers, beers we can drink anytime, anywhere.

We began our sampling with SD staples and Sore Eye Cup champions; I'm not sure I had ever really drank Oatmeal Stout from Benchmark, Tabula Rasa from Second Chance, and Speedway Stout from AleSmith in sequence but each remains a beacon of light in a sea of awesome stouts. The time tested quality of each of these beers and breweries really underlines the legitimacy of their Sore Eye Cup victories.

Then we're totally invaded and show jacked by the What's on Draft crew! They're on to discuss all the great things you can expect to see in the Sexy Brewers calendar. You get to hear my honest, first reactions to each month's picture and hear some behind the scenes stories about the shots, it's like Pop Up Podcastio, you get all the fun without those annoying visuals. The calendar benefits Life Sharing, a charity close to Tom's heart.

We squeeze in some older (aged) stouts, a few barrel aged bottles, and just for the record, we also consumed a bunch of OTL Lager and 2 crowlers of Eppig beers. This was one of our heavier drinking episodes in a while and I really enjoyed it!

Here at TIBS!, we love to mix it up with our fans and record our shows live when possible! The good folks at The Rabbit Hole invited us out for a night of fun on the back patio; you know, in the corner, where we belong!

Twenty or so of the finest individuals that the amazing indie beer community has to offer joined us for a fun night, under the sails! We began with Stephen, the general manager; discussing the change over from True North, North to The Rabbit Hole, what got him excited about craft beer in the first place, what he enjoys about running a restaurant, and the step by step world domination of the Social Syndicate.

We were then joined on The Show by Nickie Pena from Paradeigm to discuss the latest SD Craft Beer Economic Impact study and some great things about SD Beer Week and the SD Beer app!

We close out the interview section of the show with James, the beer program manager, to talk about his philosophy on beer lists, what he loves about his job, which distributors and breweries he likes working with the best, and the best way to get your beer in front of him to sample.
