There can sometimes be a disconnect with this... No one seems to talk about how to develop your own vocabulary... It's easy to add sound effects and put drums in funny orders... But how do we actually develop a PERSONAL VOCABULARY? You know. Like Bonham. Buddy. Etc etc. How do we start to sound like we made some of our own decisions about how to interpret phrasing... And hidden in that is the point... We must of course be interpreting the music for it to sound great... How do we get there directly?

This is a HARDCORE episode. It kinda covers an overview of a few of my favourite and most important insights in to drumming over the last 23 years of playing and nearly 10 years of teaching... But lately thanks to further education I am getting a particularly clear picture of how it all fits together. Consider this a 10,000 ft view of what is generally a mysterious concept to many an aspiring master drummer!!

In the episode, I am covering a controversial topic. I believe musical drummers are always the best ones to listen to. In fact there are no top drummers who are not musical... So I thought I would kill this poisonous myth once and for all!!

I started taking on a septuplets based solo this week, and thought I would give a bit of insight in to how I am internalising and breaking this thing down so I can comfortably play it and also turn the new vocabulary in to actual flow... Like real ideas that I can utize in musical situations where it may complement the music. As well as speeding up the process so I can get this thing ready in less than a week.
