  • Toxic Masculinity

In today's episode, Orlando and Julian talk about, "Toxic Masculinity," and how it has been brought to center-stage in recent years. They discuss how growing up Hispanic played a major role in how masculinity was viewed, traditionally, and how women were subjugated and made to be inferior. "Men are hunters and women are gatherers," is a very antiquated way to look at gender roles in society but it seems like, even today, there are still many men out there who still subscribe to this way of thinking.

In this episode, Orlando and Julian also discuss how this behavior and mindset of men always having to be strong, actually, weakens them and can potentially stunt their mental and emotional development. Examples of this way of thought are also discussed such as actor Terry Crews coming out against toxic masculinity after his bout with this same mindset that almost caused him to lose his family. They also talk about equality and Julian, as usual, stirs the pot a bit with his view on equality, which he does agree with by the way! So relax, turn up the volume, and take a little break from the everyday grind and enjoy this episode!

"By far the worst thing we do to makes - by making them feel they have to be hard - is that we leave them with fragile egos"

    -Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie,

    Award-winning author

Former NFL pro and actor Terry Crews has talked about Toxic Masculinity and comes to terms with his own experience where he almost lost everything important in his life.  HIS FAMILY!

However, in the act of being strong, hard, and not allowing emotions to let emotions show men are, actually, weakened by toxic masculinity and vulnerable to other destructive behaviors that can lead them down a dangerous path.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/22/us/toxic-masculinity.html

Toxic masculinity is not limited to man vs woman either.  This also includes man vs man… An article in the American Psychological Association’s (APA) talks about how this behavior can bully other men into doing things that they are uncomfortable with doing or would, otherwise, not do normally due to intimidation.

  • Dealing With Anxiety And Depression

In today’s episode of the Invincibly Broken Podcast, Orlando and Julian, once again, visit mental health and talk about why it is so hard for many men to, openly, speak about having such issues. There are many reasons, machismo, thinking that asking for help is a sign of weakness, or even simply not knowing that there is a problem.

The guys also talk about how they, personally, cope with stressors and dive a little deeper into other aspects that could trigger symptoms such as the importance of sleep to the body and mind. Other things that Orlando and Julian emphasize is the importance of not feeling alone! They hope that through this platform, perhaps, others will understand that the are not alone and feel encouraged to seek help!

  • Candid Conversation w/ Eli Rodriguez
Today’s show is a special treat! Guest number two joined Orlando and Julian for another Candid Conversation. This guest is comedienne Elizabeth Rodriguez (Eli) and she shared how she got into comedy, future plans, and came prepared with props that didn’t work! Eli has over 13 years as a comic under her belt and has opened for comics such as Bert Kreischer, Nikki Glaser, Robert Kelly, Iliza Schlesinger, and DL Hughley! IMPRESSIVE!
Orlando and Julian also learn about how she is a part of the movement to bring stand-up comedy to the virtual realm through open mics with Villain Theater for example. She also talks to the guys about the power of words and how as a society we need to LISTEN more attentively to what others are saying. This was an AWESOME conversation and we look forward to seeing Eli’s career take off! Who knows, maybe Orlando and Julian will throw their names in the hat and give stand-up a shot too.

  • Protest Spread Nationwide for George Floyd

On this episode Orlando and Julian felt compelled to continue the conversation with the senseless murder of George Floyd and the events that have happened all over the country as a result.  They also share good news stories that are also emerging from the chaos.  Opinions are shared, arguments are made and not every statement was in agreement but common ground was reached and a conversation was had.  Orlando and Julian also note that there have been positives to come from this tragedy and that in many places law enforcement and the local communities have begun to come together in solidarity.  Please take a moment to see the stories on the links provided…

On this follow up episode, Orlando and Julian also expressed the need to be socially responsible and share their views on steps that can be taken to solve this sociopolitical problem of racism, police brutality, and the loss of confidence in our law enforcement agencies.  They also challenge individuals to not just look at the headline before making assumptions or statements without getting all the facts first.

  • The Murder of George Floyd

.A video that millions of Americans have now seen, shows  George Floyd, a 46 year old black man that resided in Minneapolis, MN and had his life ended by the reckless actions of Officer Derek Chauvin by kneeling on George's neck and ultimately killing him, which has sparked an nationwide outrage.

Orlando and Julian discuss, the actual video and what the saw and felt after the watching the video. They also give their opinions regarding the ensuing demonstrations, riots, and have a debate on weather or not police departments should be, “militarized,” regarding equipment available to them.

This heinous act has further put law enforcement agencies in the spotlight in what feels like a never-ending spree of brutality cases.  We stand together in condemning this act but must not succumb to violence.  Violence begets violence but we must come together and make the decision not to go down that path!
